Winter is coming - turn grips from firewood

Went to a turning demonstration the other day. The demo was how they turned during the late 1700's using a pole lathe. Using maple firewood, chair legs were turned that were not too dissimilar from grips/reel seats. Took about 10 minutes per leg. Here are the pics:

I supplement my heating with a woodstove, I'll tell ya I get some real nice maple burl and some other hardwoods with some Crazy growth patterns mixed in my loads. None are very big pcs but I always set them aside for lathe projects. I need to rig a vacuum chamber up to my pump so I can stabilize them. Jaa Re: Winter is coming - turn grips from firewood
