Built for my brother-in-law. Cut down so he can palm the whole handle while he's stream fishing for trout in Wyoming. (He's 6'5", I'm the reverse) ;)

Jared,
I love using Minima guides on most of my rods, both hard- and soft-water. They are cost-effective, easy to clean out, and have as much or more inside diameter per guide size than most other options.
The blank options just come down to feel and how you fish....noodle rod or pike pole, watching the minnow breathe vs waiting for the head shake and line movement. They all work...it's

I have a 782-2, use it for walleye and crappie, but it's taken its share of pike, too. You have to be careful and take your time, but it will hold up...you just can't horse it. That said, the MHX 9000's sound like a better choice.

A completed rod has been returned to me with the last four inches crushed. It's a split grip and both the butt cork and exposed blank above it are cracked and out-of-round.
Can I cut this off, plug it and have any hope of salvaging it as usable (didn't say pretty) fishing instrument?
Any and all suggestions welcomed.
Thanks, as always....

7. Re: Madeira
My only suggestion when working with Madeira thread is to make sue to add a few thread ends to the thread finish before you coat it.this will keep you from having issues with fish-eyes, due to the coating on the thread.

I'm looking for suggestions from those who have sanded down fiberglass rods (ice rods in particular) to tune the action.
What methods do you use, and do you need to seal or paint the rod after you've finished? I tried a couple of searches of prior posts, and didn't come up with much.
Thanks, once again, for sharing your time and experience!

To actually answeryour original question, I doubt the face opening is any bigger than a 12 guide, but you'll need those high minima's to get the elevation you'll need. Treat the closed face tell like a casting reel, as you won't have the big variation in line location that you'd see in a normal spinning reel. Just get it down to the rod and use the smallest guides you can get away with.

IMHO, that reel will be totally overmatched by the you are fishing for. I have one that my 4 yr old uses on an ice rod for dock fishing in the summer. A big crappie is a handful for that reel and he keeps turning the handle the wrong way and backing it off the body. The drag isn't up to a big tussle. If you're dead-set on using it, your first guide doesn't need to be big, as the face of the

I absolutely agree with John, use a little white Testors model paint where you want the wraps to go. It turned a very unsatisfying first experience with orange thread into my sons' favorite look for black or blue rods.

Did you need to under-coat it with white paint or tape to make it pop, or was the metallic able to stand out on it's own?

Chuck (and assorted others concerned about the "multi-hook" rules in your area).... after reading this thread, I did some searching and found lots about the striper umbrella rigs, that only have a hook on the center bait, usually a larger swimbait or bucktail. All the bait ball rigs on the outer edges of the umbrella were 3" Sassy Shad-type softbaits without a hook, just stuck o

I just came across this, and it looks like it's got all the info for using Fuji guides and the 27x method. Just input the stats and go....
Has this been around for a while, and I've just not visited recently enough?
It looks like a really nicely-designed tool to use.

Glue several 8-12" pieces together for a musky lure tackle box. Just cut slots in the top to hold the hooks

Anytime I'm working with either yellow or orange thread, I undercoat with write Testor's paint first. It make a HUGE difference in the final outcome of the color. So much brighter and more even. I'll never go back.

What a great day to check the board before outing finish on my first effort using Madeira thread for the guides! Thank you all, as always for sharing.

Pardon my ignorance, but is there a significant difference between what you're looking for and the graphite/carbon fiber tubes that Mudhole sells (among others) ?
Just curious.

I'd use the varigated thread from Fishhawk. It alternates colors, so as you progress down the wrap, it changes nicely. Lots of color choices, too, so whatever pattern you're looking for should be covered.
Good luck!

Anyone have a measurement on the gap or clearance needed for the drill to fit the clamp? I've been thinking about getting one of these, and this seems to be a speed bump for some that have used it before.
Thanks in advance....

Okay, so taking nine kids under the age of eight fishing last week was a blast, and the bluegill co-operated nicely. #8 Circle hooks and frozen corn. No one had to wait more than a minute for their bobber to take off.
However, one of the first-timers cranked the rod (which I just finished last winter) all the way around after the line got looped under the bottom of the reel.
It's one of

I'd like to use your technique with a rubber reel seat end cap for a winding check like you used here...
How did you make a clean hole through the top?
Thanks!

If you decide to stick with the light colored wraps on a dark blank....and I like that look, btw....you can use a little testors model paint in white or the earlier post's mylar tape idea. I was AMAZED at the difference it made. I had the same experience with bright orange thread on a charcoal blank. Very discouraging at first. Attempt #2 with the undercoat totally changed the look....bright

Client's asking about using burnt burl cork for an entire grip (likes the color) including a cover for a KDPS hood.
I haven't used it before....how does it compare to regular cork or composite cork in the hand?
Any tips or tricks to using it, particularly the hood cover? Will it hold up like the other types of rings or block cork?
Thanks in advance!

If cutting the blanks isn't a comfortable option, you may want to look at ice rod blanks. Those were the first rods I made for my kids three years ago. I used Netcraft IM6 graphite, 42 inches, .225 butt. I used the biggest size I could find, but they tend to go out of stock in the summer pretty frequently. Mudhole stocks something similer these days, I believe, as well. I love the way it lo
