I replace the 1/4" drill in the arbor with a 1/4" steel rod, several inches long, that centers the hole saw in the grip. The stops are cut from a pvc pipe and clamped onto the hole saw with zip ties. Put the saw in the drill press or lathe at low speed and use progressively smaller sizes to mortice out the grip.

Burl grip on a nine weight. Feels good! Dark brown thread on a black blank looks good with no cp.

I stuck with my home made drill lathe for a while. I saw this Jet mini lathe on Craigslist and couldn't resist. Turns out the seller is a fisherman, too, so we hit it off. He makes beautiful bowls on a huge lathe and had no use for this anymore. I got a great deal plus he threw in some tools. Much quieter and smoother than the high speed drill.

I got tired of those wing nuts on my grip clamp and came up with this. Used a one quart glue gun for subfloor glue. I made shims to fit the glue gun with the hole saw, to put the first ring 2-1/4" from the end of the mandrel so I can chuck it into the home made lathe (drill type shown).

I cut a 1-1/4" by 1/8" depression, with a forstner bit, in the board to accept the cork rings. Pop the ring in, here I am drilling using a 20mm forstner bit to glue over a 20mm reelseat arbor. The screen over the dust collector is to keep from loosing a ring when I fumble one.

I have made a split grip Tennessee sj722 Rainforest 2. I shortened a store bought Tennessee grip, and made a fighting butt for the rod. I used Pacbay Minima match guides and fx zirconia #4 micros.
