The customer wanted a gimbal to keep the rod from flipping around with an Abu c3 reel when in the recessed rod holder built in to his kayak. The rear grip is 10" from bottom of reel seat to bottom of gimbal. The blank is a Batson RX4 saltwater sws70L, it's for stripers halibut and rock bass.

Combination of different cork and eva butt. I made the butt cap big because I can always make it smaller if it feels too large.

A rod for a guy that normally fishes dry flies. This 9' 5wt RX7 casts real nice with a 5 wt line.

I replaced the cork grip on my nine weight when it wore out and replaced it with this burl cork grip. It has caught lots of stripers throwing a heavy sinking line with no wear so far, and it feels better, too.

I tried a different brand of color preserver than usual. It was inconsistent in preserving the thread color. Should have done two more coats, only did two soakings.

Bob, thread finish tends to wick up onto the guides when I apply it. Seems to do this no matter how little or much I apply, but I just take a toothpick and swipe it off around the base of the guide to alleviate that problem.

If you are using sinking tips or shooting heads on your 7 weight, they pass through snake guides more easily than single foot guides which the loop to loop knot tends to hang up on.

Paul, I fish some small ponds for smallish bass and big bluegill and I have an old RX7 Rainshadow 8' 4 wt that is my favorite for the application. I probably went with 8' versus 8'6" because it was on sale at the time. I also have a 8'6" 6/7 that I use for heavy deer hair poppers and bunny strippers. On the 4 wt I use small foam rubber leg beetle poppers, foam damsels, girdle bugs, and

I am pretty sure the problem is a fine line of adhesive around the edge of the decal, the epoxy won't flow over it. You're right Bill, put the decal over a coat of epoxy.

This doesn't directly help your RX8 question. I built a few PacBay quicklines, one is a 9' 4wt. He loves it, and his wife just ordered one. I weighed the blank when I got it and it's really 1.3 ounces. I also built one 10' 4wt for another customer that usually nymphs and he loves it. I used burl cork grips and Recoil snakes on these so no problem balancing with a light reel.

Coat decal edges with color preserver or spray over with krypton fixative. Sometimes it works and other times not. Decals are a pain for me, too.

I didn't get the letter. I ordered mostly from Anglers Workshop because I'm on the west coast, too, and their customer service was good. I hope the sale works out for the owners, everyone is going to retire some time. I'm not familiar with Lure Parts so we will see how this turns out.

Roger, I use braid for the pull through loop, with a salmon egg bead on it. I had purchased a big Fishhawk assortment and I realized I had been making do with it beause I used an old Gudebrod chestnut spool on the last rod and it was so nice and easy to work with. Maybe just a bad batch, should have chucked it a long time ago.

Does Gudebrod still make rod wrapping thread? I bought some FishHawk and it's terrible (fuzzy and breaks when pulling through) compared to the Gudebrod that I have.

On a spey rod I doubt there is much significance of the weight of thread and finish using double foot snake guides when the line you are casting weighs in at around 500 grains. Balance is not really an issue when the grip is 14" plus a 4" reel seat and a 4" rear grip. I find that shooting head connections pass through snake guides better than single foot guides when you're trying t
