Maple body, blood wood, maple and ebony trims. It makes me think of a southwestern US feel.

I had a nice visit with Billy V. this afternoon. My take on this is that there are a few problems and historical distinctions that limit the use of inlays in a handle.
#1. In recent history the use of wood in a fishing rod handle has not been the norm.
I’m not a pool player, so I can’t say that there hasn’t been a cue “handle†made from cork, EVA or flocked. I have never seen a

Hey guys, I'm still around. Just checking in every couple of days.
All you need to do is buy one of these grips. Use it to make a form. Take a 2X4 plow out the middle of it to fit the diameter - use a dado blade in a table saw, router, chisel, what ever. Next step, get some bondo (auto body filler) put it into the groove you just cut in the 2X4 - wrap the grip with wax paper and push

HI guys. I have done a few cork wood combo's and have glued it all up at once. Use a gouge to rough out the wood and sand the cork and wood to shape. Back your sand paper with a block of wood so that you won't dig into the cork more than the wood at the transition. I havee also use a whole saw to rough out wood "rings". It really takes more time to do that than it does to turn the

Daniel,
Afraid I can't help with a "local" supplier in spain. I buy most of my wood from Cook Woods on the west coast USA. I'm sure that a search using
Exotic wood should turn up something for you on your side of the pond!!!

A quick note here to publicly thank Tom Kirman. In the last Rodmaker mag. Tom put a blurb in about my stuff not getting to the show and mentioning how to get a peek at them. I had no idea he was going to do that. When I showed my wife she said "he's a stand up guy"!! I have to agree. I have already contacted Tom directly to thank him, just wanted to let the rest of you know the s

Steve, I use Birchwood @#$%& True oil on most of my handles. It will depend on the wood you select. Some woods have such a high resin content that they won't take a finsish, or it's difficult to get them to take one. Cocobolo is one of these, but sanding to a very fine grit, buffing and a wax finish is really all that's needed.

I use True oil on almost all my wood handles. Drying time for the first coat seems to very depending on the type of wood used, additional coats all dry very fast. I'd just wait a day or 2. You shoud then be able to recoat every couple of hrs.

Hi Dan,
If by glueing up a wood handle you mean different pieces of wood before you turn it, I generally use Tightbond, although at times (depending on the wood) epoxy.
If you mean gluing to the blank then I'd go with Rod Bond or one of the other products made for that purpose.

For some woods you MAY need to steam them. If you use a real straight grained wood - NO KNOTS - cut in 1/8" or less strips you can just bend and glue. I'm bending some very brittle woods cut in 1/16" or 1/32" strips with no breaks, it all depends on the grain and how thick. Heck, enough time, enough steam and enough pressure you can bend 3/4" stuff. Just depends on what

20. Apology to Fedex
I need to clarify much of what we related to folks who stopped by our booth at Charlotte.
Our display didn't make it to the show, we did. We had checked late friday night with Fedex and with my limited knowledge they could not give me any information other than "we don't know where it's at". We said, way to often, that Fedex lost it, which is not true, come to find out. They ha

Billy,
The beauty is you can do it any style of handle you want. I've just done it in the fly handle to have some display models for the show ( it is in conjuction with the fly fishing show).

26. new photos
Hi all,
I haven't posted here for a while but I still check in on the site everyday. I've been waiting to upload some new photos until the new software was installed, but it's getting close to the show date so I went ahead and posted. Wanted to show you some of the new designs you can see in person if you are coming to Charolette. Worst case I will repost latter, no big deal.

Tom,
It only took you 3 tries to get that? On one I'm doing right now for Charolette I'm on my 10th attempt, another was 6. You are good!!
I'll be posting pictures (with links to my server until the new photo page is going) soon.
The 10 time design is in direct response to a rather leanghty post on this forum some time ago about gun stock checkering. I WILL SUCCEED!!!!!!!!
