Yes, not using CP can give some very nice looks.
On this particular rod, a 8 ft 3wt NFC Gary.
Loomis Classic, I want to try to duplicate the original Loomis finish. I have fished an original for 30 years and it’s my favorite rod. I think the whole Gary Loomis story is an interesting one.

Thanks for the replies. I just assumed it was NOCP, but it wasn’t labeled that way. Not a big deal as I stopped finishing when doing the first guide. When I asked “Siri” the links said it did not need color preservative. Last time I trust her!

I just finished wrapping an NFC blank with Fuji Ultra Poly thread size A. I thought it was NOCP but there is significant darkening of the wraps when putting on the rod finish. I was using Blue Dun #10.
I was wondering if you use color preservative when you use Fuji Ultra thread?

Thanks a lot for the reply. John passed around 5 years ago. The reel seats probably came from his connections to Anglers Roost. He was an interesting man and would have been neat to know. One of these days I’ll figure out how to post a photo of the skeleton hardware. . I am experimenting with a reel seat that needs a larger diameter insert and this seat seems to be perfect. I’ve been experimentin

A number of years ago, probably around 10-15, I bought a number of machined aluminum fly reel seat skeletons. They were purchased on @#$%& and the seller was very cantankerous. I remember his @#$%& name as BOBO. He couldn’t stand any criticism and was very obnoxious in his replies. I never used the seats and now I am looking to build a couple rods using them. The take a slightly larger diameter i

I appreciate your concern about the blank choice. I have other surf rods and just got wanted use a light rod at the time conditions are right to cast to the close troughs. I have watched a number of fisherman on the beach using similar size rods. I realize it will not be appropriate for a lot of surf conditions. I am fishing Playalinda beach at the Kennedy Space Center. I also bought some 2oz a

I am building a Mudhole L905 7’6” 12-25#. 1/2 - 3 oz light surf fishing rod. I am thinking of buying a Daiwa Saltist 3000 reel to complete the setup. I’m looking for opinions on that reel or suggestions for a different reel. I appreciate your help!

I have taken a few years off from building rods and have started again. I am getting ready to finish the wraps and the resin part of my Glass Coat has hardened. I have been able to get almost all to liquify by using a hot water bath on the bottle, and placing it on a heat register. Is this finish OK to use or should I get new finish?
Thanks,

I have not used a mandrel for turning my last few reel seats. I have switched over to using collets and really like the change. It gives me a lot more flexibility when drilling the center hole to blank diameter. I have a collet for just about any hole up to 1". Anyone else using a collet chuck?

I have a Shikari rod I built a few years ago and broke the tip section about 2' from the tip. I would like to fix it by putting a ferrule at the break. The blank is about 4mm at the break. Is this something that should work and any ideas where to get a ferrule that size?

I am building a couple Mudhole MHX 7'6" spinning rods to be used for trout, reds, etc in the Fl intercoastal waters----Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, etc.
I am looking at Shimano Symetre as I want to keep the cost around $100. I want to be sure I get a reel appropriate for the saltwater. There are so many choices the more I look the more confused i get! Looking at the sy2500, sy3000,

I am looking for a couple of blanks that would be similar to the St Croix Tidemaster I used on a fishing charter on the Indian River. Recommendations on where to purchase the blanks would be appreciated also. I am open not only to St Croix, but other blanks as well.
Thanks,
Herb

Another option has presented itself---that being a small flats boat. (what a women i married). A little more info might help with suggestions. I am a 67 yr old snowbird and will be returning to MI in a couple of weeks so the purchase will be put off until late Fall. Joints are not as flexible as they used to be so the kayak might be a problem in a few years. Still leaning towards the kayak

I am considering getting a Kayak for fishing the Indian River Lagoon and other waters neat Titusville, FL. I'm looking for suggestions and ideas from anyone who has experience with fishing from a Kayak. The Hobie Mirage system has caught my eye. I wil be fishing alone most of the time, but like the option of the two person model such as the Oasis. I wonder how it would handle as a single? I

I just finished up using the last of my 32oz of rodbond. Took a few years to do it! Does that make me a rodbuilder? I give away most of my rods and did not keep track of how many it took to use up that amount of Rod Bond. On to my second quart. I love this hobby!
Happy holidays to all,

I have 4 spinning rod that I need to build for Christmas gifts. These will be for kids--the oldest being 15. I thought I had more spinning rod blanks than I do. Most of the blanks I have are flyrod blanks. I know the fish won't care, and the kids won't either. These will be used on inland lakes for panfish and walleye.
Have others done this and are there any suggestions as to the flyrod b

I am thinking of doing a guided trip on the Mosquito Lagoon in the Titusville, FL area. I have never done this before and am wondering what the tipping protocol is. The rates run from $350 to $450 a day. This is a significant cost. Is a tip required? If so is it dependant on how successful the trip was? I don't want to come off sounding like a cheapskate, but am curious what others do.

I touched up some guide wrap finish that I wasn't satisfied with, and the touched up areas are still tacky after two days. I am sure it is a problem with the 50/50 mix as I only did a small volume. My question is: What do I need to do to these wraps so I can apply a new mix?
Thanks,
Herb

I need to either trade or purchase about 10 fairly light spinning blanks( 1 or 2 piece--6.5' to 8'--up to 3/8oz or so). I am building rods for friends, kids, etc. I have a lot of fly blanks that I would trade for spin if anyone is interested. This is pretty much a "feeler" to see if there is interest and looking for suggestions how to proceed.
Thanks,
Herb

I have a friend that wants me to build a "level wind baitcasting rod". The rod will be used primarily for Northern Pike when he visits relatives in Canada. I build mostly fly rods and need suggestions.
I have trigger reel seats that I modify for casting rods. I would appreciate any recommendations on a blank and guides----probably 6' to 6'6".
Thanks,
Herb

This may not be a very good reason, but I found it much easier to ream the cork using split grips on a couple of surf rods I built. It is the only time I have used a split grip, but will definately do more in the future.
