I have read where pin type meters don't work well on wood as it is tough to get enough penetration for an accurate reading. I would like to get a moisture meter but am clueless and confused as what type, brand etc to get. I don't want to break the bank, but would like to get something adequate for my needs. I have been cutting some maple, oak and other burls and would really like to get a mois

62. Microwave drying
Good afternoon,
I just returned from Walmart and they have a small microwave for $34. I have read and re read the archives on drying a few blanks at a time an am really uncertain about trying the method. I'm having a difficult time evaluating the pros and cons. MY son-in law cut a beautiful large maple burl for me. I haver processed much into 1.25 x 1.25 x various lengths and coated them

I appreciate the replies to my question on turning green wood, which was a cherry burl. In just a few days after turning the insert my question was answered first hand! The insert became lumpy, crooked, and warped a great deal. There were no splits, but the original shape was completely altered. Seems patience is a virtue. This wood will make some beautiful seats, but not for a while!

A couple of weeks ago my sons cut a cherry tree with a nice burl. They saved the burl for me. I was planning to wait until fall to cut it, but my impatience got the best of me and today I cut it. The wood is absolutely beautiful. I cut the appropriate size blanks and will Anchorseal the ends and store.
I decided to turn one of the blanks out of curiosity , even though it is green wood.

I have a variable speed jet mini lathe , 1014VS and am considering buying the Penn State Turncrafter pro to have at my summer cabin. I also have a variable speed control from MLCS that I use on a single speed router I have. Would it work to use that control on either the Turncrafter Pro lathe or the Jet that is not the VS model? I posed the question on the Penn State help link and never got a

Mike,
Have you considered using Rod Bond? It stays where you put it and provides a great bond. I'd recommend switching to it for many rod building applications.

Has anyone been able to contact Bob Venneri? I am interested in his mortising jig, but emails and phone
calls go unanswered. Thought maybe he was a snowbird----I am a wannabe .

69. Re: teak wood
I have done a few teak inserts and complete grips. They are very classy, finish well and should be very durable. They have been quite popular.

I just had one of my more frustrating rod building experiences in quite a while! I was wrapping an ice rod with Fuji BLVLG single foot guides for my brohther -in-law. I had the worst time getting the thread to pack tightly on it's way up the foot. That little wing on the guide foot made it very difficult to pack. Any tricks anyone have with these guides?
Thanks,
Herb

Karen,
I think I would answer "yes" to all of your questions. A lot of rod building is a matter of personal preference. I also like the high build finish and the bulky look. Strictly, in my opinion, personal taste.
Cork quality is another issue that will only escalate as supply of the "good" cork gets harder and harder to find. I have no idea what "flor grade&qu

72. Ice rod blanks
I am interested in building some ice rods for my brothers-in law. They are avid ice fishermen and generally fish for panfish. I am clueless on the type of blank to use and am having trouble finding info. I would really appreciate some advice!
Thanks
