Does anyone have the Common Cents data for the Rainshadow Eternity 2 9'0" 5 wt. 4 pc. (ETEF 905-4CB)? I can't seem to find it in the CCS database. Thanks, Bryon

I have been searching relentlessly all over the internet lately trying to find an orange aluminum winding check -- to no avail. Upon searching this forum, I discovered that at least one other person had the same problems some years back (2010), so I thought I would share a little something that I discovered today. A lot of the "dimpled" aluminum winding checks that you see on rod buil

I used to agonize over this very problem (bubbles in the finish in syringes). Like others who have already responded, my method is to draw up a small amount of finish until I see a bubble. Then I expel that finish back into the bottle, and re-insert the syringe into the most bubble-free area that I can find in the bottle, making sure that the tip of my syringe is well-submerged before drawing up

Phil, I do have some interest in fiberglass blanks, especially if I could find one with more of a moderate to moderate-fast action. I do own a couple; one I believe is an old Shakespeare Wonder Rod, which is much too noodly for my taste. The other is newer, a little 6'6" 4 wt. from Cabelas that actually fishes better with a 5 wt. line. I will do some reading about the S-glass blanks you

Herb, Thank you for those recommendations. I had never checked out the CTS website before but I must say they have some impressive-looking offerings and customer testimonials. It will be a little while yet before I'm ready to buy but when the time comes I will certainly be looking at those and will likely be e-mailing you for more detailed information. Thanks again, Bryon

Some years ago I built an 8'6" 4/5 wt. rod on one of the then-popular Sevier "TIger Eye" blanks. It quickly became my favorite rod and remained so until yesterday, when it was unceremoniously snapped in half while fighting a large bass. Naturally, I want to replace the rod, but as I recall from my last attempt to locate the Tiger Eye blanks, no one has them anymore. Therefore, I

Jimmy and Greg -- I did email Pac Bay and inquire about the cost of getting a replacement section. No reply as of yet. We'll see what they have to say, but in the meantime, my wife presented me with another solution. As I was shopping around for other possible blank replacements yesterday, I discovered that Sage is closing out their VXP line and selling them off at a substantial discount. I casua

Victor -- thanks for this idea on the reel seat. I will have to look up how to ream out the old blank as I've never done that before. I used to use the boiling water trick to recover reel seats

Tom, thanks for your response. Fortunately those blanks are much less expensive than their performance would normally dictate, so I think I will take my chances with a new one. As you said, worst case scenario is I have to build the whole new blank out. I didn't know about the point of greatest stress occurring between guides, but now that you say that it makes sense. It's entirely possible t

I was fishing my Pac Bay Quickline series 9' 8 wt. (actually a 7 wt. w/ERN of 7.9 used with an 8 wt. line) yesterday when I hooked a lily pad stem. Rather than pointing the rod at the snag and pulling straight back on the line as I should have done, I gave it a sharp upward snap like I was setting the hook on a fish -- not really hard, but hard enough apparently--and the blank broke. It was a cle

Thanks, guys. I was afraid of that, but I do have a Dremel so it's just a matter being careful I guess. I did upload a photo of one of the guides on the photo site. Search under my username Bryon Keith Anderson to see. What I want is just to get them off of there with no damage to the blank so I can replace them with light wire snake guides with normal thread wraps. I'll post photos of the fin

I need some help removing some very odd guides from an old spincasting rod. Where the "feet" would be on a modern guide, these have metal windings that appear to be wound around the blank itself. They actually look like springs. These spring-like things hold tight to the blank, and appear to hold the guide onto the blank, as there are no thread wraps over them. If anyone is familiar wi

Thank you for your replies Tom, Russ and Roger. Russ, to answer your question, the only products I use right now that might present a problem are epoxy and laquer thinner. I'm almost afraid to ask, but how could acetone and a box fan create an explosion? Would this be a danger with the laquer thinner as well?

I am getting ready to relocate my rod building bench to a different room, and this has given rise in my mind to some questions about adequate ventilation. I have done some searching in the archives of this board, and have found some discussions of the dangers of epoxy and solvent fumes in which several people mentioned using "adequate ventilation" but exactly what they were using was no

Very cool Garcia/Conolon 6', 1-piece fiberglass blank created for Lee Wulff, complete with custom cork grip/reel seat combo installed, currently being offered for sale. I have no connection with the seller, just remembered seeing old American Sportsman episodes of Lee using this very rod and thought it was cool, something fellow rod builders might appreciate or find interesting. Phil, Thanks for your reply and for clarifying your point. I really have no choice but to stick to my budget for rod building, and for all my other fishing gear as well. I'm fortunate enough to have a modest amount to spend on such luxuries after the house, car, kids' needs and all the rest is paid for, and I'm grateful for that. Even if I had the money, I could never see myself dropping the

Thank you gentlemen for your replies and suggestions, they are much appreciated. Jerry - I agree with you that the Sage VXP or ONE blanks would probably suit my purpose nicely, but as they both are unfortunately at least double or triple my working blank budget, they are not really options for me at this point. Phil Ewanicki - I read your replies several times each; I appreciate you shar

Greetings, Well, it's been a while since I did any rod-building, but the time has come once again. I'm looking for a 9' 6-7 wt. 4-piece blank that I can pick up for $75-100.This will be used primarily for smallmouth, but also occasionally for throwing large streamers on a sink-tip from a boat. I haven't been in the market for a blank in a while - the last one I built on was a Pacific Bay Q

That's a good idea Bill. I was hoping that it was something as simple as just letting the ink dry more thoroughly. Thanks!

I have an 8' Shakespeare Wonderod that I am in the process of restoring to fishability. So far, I have stripped off the old rod finish, refinished with two coats of Permagloss (which turned out great), and wrapped on new guides. I wanted to do an inscription in red on the white blank, so I got some good quality gel ink pens (having had good luck with this medium before, on factory-finished graphi

Thanks to all who replied. Tom, I.was figuring that what you described would likely be the case. I'm pretty sure this is an old Shakespeare Wonderod that I have. I.had originally thought I would try to pretty it up with a new color of finish, fancy reel seat and guides, etc, but in the end I decided to preserve its "retro" look: I'm stripping the old finish off, refinishing with untinte

Has anyone here ever re-finished a white blank using tinted Permagloss to change the blank color? If so, and if you have photos, I would love to see some, as I am considering such a project myself and am curious to see what results can be achieved. If you don't want to post them on here, you can email them to me. I would be most grateful. I tried searching the photo archives here but didn't have

My dad recently broke the 7' spinning rod I built for him and sent the remains to me to see if I could perform a resurrection. I consulted Skip Morris' book "The Custom Graphite Fly Rod", and it said that a cleanly broken (i.e. not splintered) blank--which this one is--can be "spliced" back together using a section of scrap blank inserted into the two broken ends of the broken
