I need some help removing some very odd guides from an old spincasting rod. Where the "feet" would be on a modern guide, these have metal windings that appear to be wound around the blank itself. They actually look like springs. These spring-like things hold tight to the blank, and appear to hold the guide onto the blank, as there are no thread wraps over them. If anyone is familiar with what I'm describing, is there a way to remove these things without ruining the blank? These guides are on a very old spincasting rod of my late father's. I am toying with the idea of stripping everything off, cleaning it up and making it into a short fly rod.

I took some pics, but I can't see a way here to add pics to a post. I can email a pic to anyone who'd like to see what I'm talking about, if that would help.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, you have to cut them off. The trick is redoing the guides with the same type wire windings. Very, very difficult to do.

Thanks, guys. I was afraid of that, but I do have a Dremel so it's just a matter being careful I guess. I did upload a photo of one of the guides on the photo site. Search under my username Bryon Keith Anderson to see.

What I want is just to get them off of there with no damage to the blank so I can replace them with light wire snake guides with normal thread wraps. I'll post photos of the finished rod if I manage to pull it off.

Cut on top of the guide foot. You only need to snip or cut one wire strand, then just unwind is as you would a thread wrap.

I had some of these to do the other week. I snipped the eye off then carefully unwound with pliers (just cos it hurt my fingers) if you loosen them so they turn you can slip them off the top of the rod. They leave groves in the blank though so I marked out the length of the new eye on the blank and put some finish direct onto the rod (just like i would a finished guide) and this filled in the groves nicely.

Thanks Tom - glad to know they will come off easily.
