I bought a ton of it because of the broad range of color and low price. I hated it and gave it away, Very low stretch and didn't like the way it burnished. Had a heck of a time with finish with it too. Get a small amount and try some before you jump in with both feet. There's many who like it and that's just my expierence. Might be I'm old and set in my ways but using it was very different than

I've had my struggles with those as well. Try this: peel the paper off the back, put it on, cover it with one layer of blue painters tape and wrap over it really tightly with thread. I use size "E" so it doesn't break. Take off the thread and tape then carefully lift off the clear layer off the decal. (confession, the first few I did I didn't realize you were supposed to take off the cl

Once you get the guides close to straight turn the rod up side down and you should see a bit of guide on either side of the blank. Start with the tip and you should see an equal amount of guide on each side of the blank as you go down the blank. If you're sighting down the blank from the top the guides may arc a little to one side but your eye will follow the arc and they may appear straight. A l

If you google it you'll find alot of pictures of different conolons, compare the handle style and other features and you should be able to find what it looked like originally, You might have enough clues to get a pretty good idea of the other info as well. I've been doing alot of restoring old rods lately and it's very helpful

Guides start with a 25 or 20 depending on the reel, Taller reel taller guide. Then either 20 16 12 10 8 8 for mono down to a 10 for braid and a knot or 12 if your'e going to be casting something heavy, 2-3oz or heavier. Make sure your tip ring size isn't smaller the your smallest guide. I've had 2 for repairs lately were the front guide feet on all the small guides were broken because the guy was

The lower roller, the sloped side faces the reel. The sloped side will face the reel on all of them.

Thanks, unfortunately the machines been bolted to the work surface since 2000 because it would vibrate badly when I mashed the pedal, now after 16 years with all the dripping flexcoat it's going nowhere. I'm thinking a box with notches a book and bare bones old school frustrator. These things are just too cool not to fish, 12 feet of parabolic heaven. Some cork tape a dozen guides a day on the po

I picked up a coulpe 12" 1 piece pre browning silaflex blanks yesterday that I want to build but my machine is 10' and my space is 11'. Looks like I'll have to make some kind of hand wrapper and build them on the porch. Any ideas on something I can make without breaking the bank since I'll likely only use it twice? Looks like Rube Goldberg time for me. I've seen so many clever ideas on here

Several of mine and my clients rods develop cracks at the guide feet after several years of use. The epoxy gets brittle from sun and age and the load put on heavy saltwater rods eventually cause cracks, more at the tip and less at the guides closer to the reel. All mine have 2 wraps over the feet and 2 coats of flex coat. I know most rods will do that eventually with that kind of use. I'll get ro

Some tread will loose strength over time it depends on how it was stored ,the brand, color etc. I keep mine in a cabinet with drawers and don't leave it out when I'm not using it. I used some 30 year old Holland thread that worked fine but I've had some become unuseable after just a few years. One brands turquoise seems to go bad fairly quickly for some reason. Some colors fade on the top layers

I have the same problem with a 9' ultra lite factory rod but mostly with braid. I've tried different spool diameters, weight etc and it birdnests about mid rod. I'll try moving the butt guide around. Thanks for the tip.

Randy, I would use the #25 on a yo-yo, pretty standard for that application. The guides should be large to allow the spectra-mono connection to pass thru better and also cuts down on friction when casting heavy iron. Many times casting distance is the name of the game. 14" grip will allow you to use the rail if you find some mid grade tuna. If I'm building anything for 40lb line or larger fo

I have a client who wants thresher sharks on a set of 3 rods. I found almost every other shark but no threshers. Hoping I don't have to have them made since I only need 3. Checked all the sites on the left and a few others. Any ideas, maybe someone has some? Thanks

Jamie, Just my opinion of what I use. A few months ago I bought a few rainshadows for light surf fishing that were on sale, built one and took it to the beach and another angler bought it right out of my hand. Ended up building 4 more in a month and everyone loved them. I have a similar G Loomis that costs 3x as much and now I'm fishing the rainshadow. Great blanks, good bang for your buck, wouldn'

Hi Jamie, So spinning or conventional? Do you want to throw poppers, waxwings or swimbaits? For the waxwing 7' should be good but the swimbaits and poppers 8' might be better. A good quality composite with a little more glass toward the tip for the poppers a little less for swim baits and the waxwing could be fairly stiff 7' since it would be similar to a yo-yo rod. I can't think of one to do

I got a 10' 6" rainshadow for light surf fishing. Built and sold 6 in the last few months to people who liked mine. You have to wrap the ferrule or it will split? Not familiar using 2 piece rod in the salt here. Everything is 1 piece.Uh-oh

I saw a post about dragon skin so I gave a try and it came out nice. I'd like to use it as the back round for a shadow box. For spacing on closed wraps I take the circumference and multiply by .4. Would this work okay for a shadow box? From the pictures I've seen the optical box effect seems most influenced by spacing. It's only 15cm so blank taper shouldn't be an issue. It's also a fairly narrow

I used a cheap floor to ceiling book case with adjustable shelves. I can see them all and they don't get beat up being jostled around. Holds more than 50 too. It never occured to me that you could have too many.

Definitely do not use rod finish on the blank for all the reasons above plus it starts peeling off pretty quickly( I've done it trust me). I haven't used permagloss but I use something similar and it works very well. 3 coats should be fine I've been to a blank factory here and they use a dip tank and run it through a round squigee so it comes out thin. Doing it for one rod seems a bit extreme.

I use the cheapest masking tape I can find, cut a dozen small pieces and stick them all over the machine so they're handy. Mostly use 2 foot guides so it works pretty well. Any residue is between the under and over wrap. The store brands at the big box stores seem to stick better than the name brands. Use blue painters tape to protect the hardware when I'm turning cork, works great for that.

Thanks Rog, I used the brand "x" I mentioned and put on the flex coat. No issue with the color but the 2 products seemed a little incompatible and I had to go over it with the brush several times to get it even. Not what I was hoping for. The gudebrod cp was pretty old so maybe that was it. Also the thread didn't darken a shade like it normally does. I try to only use 1 heavy coat of

Thank you I ordered some chromaseal and I'll try some when it gets here. I did bands on a scrap blank of different color maderia and coated it with CPXtra. The tread drank it up pretty well so I'll try some flex coat and see what happens.
