Just did my first build using Maderia thread. Everything went well until this morning. I started putting on the first coat of flex coat and the colors started washing out right away like I'd used no cp at all. Thankfully I only did one guide. I used gudebrod color preserver on all the wraps, one coat, a few days ago so it was plenty dry. I've used one coat of Gudebrod cp for many years on gudebro

Thank you, as I've mentioned on here before I'm redoing a bunch of 50's 60's rods back to factory correct. I've never used a product like permagloss before. I'm sure you just saved me a bunch of heart ache. Only been on this site for a few months and such a helpful group with no @#$%&. Thanks guys. Been doing this for 30+ years but I've learned a ton just reading old posts. Awesome!

I'd just trim the part sticking up and add another coat of rod finish. Make sure it's extra clean and you'll be mixing a small amount of finish so make sure you get your ratio perfect. Don't make it worse by cutting any corners!

X2 for Schneiders, great prices and they get it to you quick. If you're just starting lots of close out stuff very reasonable if you want to get a couple rods under your belt and not spend a bunch of money. No complaints about the other vendors either.

Out west here 1 under wrap and 2 over wraps would be a triple wrap, pretty standard on most customs for salt except 20lb and under. Over kill for sure but you give them what they want. Easier to do than trim bands anyway.

I noticed you put your gimbal on when you were installing the handel. I usually put those and butt caps on as the last thing I do. Could be the gimbal is a little off center and that could cause the wobble.

Built many a fenwick over the years, they used to make some nice blanks. They were bought by a big company and you know the story. The guides would be similar to the one in the picture but the $1-$2 models not the carbide ones. That style guide is still used alot here, Pac bay for one makes them. Should be easy to find one on line. I have a bunch too if you're in a jam. If they're old mildrum the

I'm out here in So Cal. I've built close to 3000 rods over the years, almost all saltwater. Once and a while I'd do one without a butt wrap but 99% of the ones I built did.. I did them by the piece for a local shop here. Thankfully I didn't do it to put food on the table or we would have starved. I've backed off quite a bit now and don't do any for any shops, just a few a month now. Form what I s

grab a zanex,do some yoga, take some deep breaths. Ready? look to the left of your screen. If you can't find what you're looking from all those vendors don't know that there's help for you. Seriously this is a hobby for you, relax, relax. Mix in some gold or yellow to highlight the green. Different shades of green can look really nice. This is the easy part none of rod building has to be hard. T

25 years ago I was building a rod for a machineist friend of mine who saw me struggling to find the center line. He took the old frame base from a penn reel and put a small 1" screw in the center and it works like a charm, don't know what I'd do without it. Yankee ingenuity.

Steve, Relax, try different methods until you reach a comfort zone and settle on something that works for you. I'm addicted to the foot pedal for wrapping guides, knew a guy who used 2 music stands with u things and put the spool of thread in his lap and did beautiful work fairly quickly too. Keep at it, take your time and don't get frustrated. Hope you get to wet a line with your son soon!

I Put the wood gudebrode spool on a piece of old blank and turned it on my power wrapper. Fits nice and snug inside the maderia spool and looks like it should work like a charm. If not I'll try the foam arbors, thanks Mike. Thanks again for the helpful suggestions, any other ideas I'm all ears

Thanks Bob, I thought of that too but I'll try the wood spool first since it already has a hole in it. Whatever I use will have to be turned since the inside of the Maderia spool is conical. I figured I wasn't the first to run into this and maybe someone had a better solution.

Thanks, I used to pack rat the empty spools and had a ton of them thinking they'd come in handy someday. Threw them away a while ago, Who knew? I do have a bunch with almost nothing on them I can use. Do you have the tread come off the top like a spinning reel unloads or put something thru the spool like a conventional reel? I'm going to try to turn the wood spool today and see what happens. I'l

Hello, I've just received some Maderira thread and found it to be not compatible with the posts on the thread carriage of my custom power wrapper. The conical hole inside the spool is way too big. I want to avoid having to transfer the thread to a compatible spool. I was wondering if there is something I can buy or diy easy solution. I'm thinking of taking an old wood spool and turning it to fit

You'd be ok with graphite just don't tighten the clamp down extra hard. I'd go with aluminum one if you're going to be using a 114. Look inside the reel seat to make sure it's not smooth, some don't come with small channels to hold the glue, you might have to rough it up a bit.
