A couple of new weaves on several new rods I'll be trying out next week on an 8 day tuna trip on the Excel out of San Diego. The wahoo weave is on Calstars new 700MH blank which should be a great baitcasting tuna rod for fish up to 100#. Both weaves done all in A thread. Thanks to Ken Bush for the initial pattern idea.

I built this as a favor for a buddy to give to his father in law who owns some Roter Rooter franchises back east. His nickname obviously is Roto Ed! His business colors are red, white and blue but I don't like white and substituted silver instead. I used all A Gudebrod thread for the weave and crosswrap cept for the last thread in the crosswrap which is a Holland varigated silver/black. It took a

This is what makes it all worth while to me. Fishing with my son with us both using my custom rods. I couldn't ask for more. This was on a recent 5 day tuna trip out of San Diego. He caught his biggest ever tuna, a 56# yft and his biggest ever yellowtail, at 36#. He broke in two new rods also......

Several folks have asked me how I developed the weave pattern for the RodMaker gaff that was on the Dec04 cover. This is a similar logo that I just developed to put on fancy gaff for a friend. Pattern ended up being 46 threads. Haven't decided yet but will for sure make the dot over the eye in A red metallic with the rest either all A silver HT metallic or maybe the Laser in gold and the Quipt in

World's first Tweaker Rod(at least the first I've seen in San Diego). Look at the guides closely. This is a gift for a friend who is chartermaster of a 5 day trip this summer. Note all the snow on the ground-another tuff day in paradise! How I long for those cold Wisconsin nites of my youth......

Bill S asked if my son and I use the fancy rods I build on our trips. OF COURSE we do!! This pic shows the phoenix tat on my sons back the the same phoenix woven in the middle of the butt wrap on his rod. I've previously posted pics of the phoenix weave. He gets many comments on the weave when folks notice the same phoenix on his back. Great fun to watch him fish.

64.5# bft caught on a recent trip using my 8' jig stick, I really got worked with the long rod but it was worth 2nd place jackpot. Fish were boiling on the surface and only way to reach them was a long rod and surface iron. PS-I'm the old guy on the right.

Hope I don't get busted for posting a pic of this magazine cover, Kayak Magazine, but the shot really shows the reason to acid or spiral wrap rods, check out the twisting of the guides-hope it shows up in the pic, I'm hanging a copy in my workshop to show folks who question acidwrapping, anybody want a copy, email me. If nothing else, its good advertising for the magazine.

A couple of rods for a friend, one on the right was done a year ago and has a 60 thread weave in A gold metallic, just finished the one on the left with a 70 thread weave where I let the yt finally catch the bait! Next one will be 80 threads where he swallowed the bait and has a smile on his face! don't hold your breath for that one though...

I thought I had posted this but I guess not. This is the weave on my son's rod that I based on the tatoo he has on his back as shown in the previous pic I posted of him fishing. All his rods have that weave on them and you can sortof make it out on his rod. It's a 70 thread pattern done in HT A gold metallic and A black nylon threads. I've given later versions a red eye which he likes.

This is a 55 thread pattern done in FishHawk A and Gudebrod Black A. The split diamond wrap uses Gudebrod AA silk black thread with FishHawk A metallics. This weave was one of the first Tom K put in his old black and white magazine gallery. Got the idea for the pattern from a similar statue in front of the Tuna Club at Catalina.

50 thread weave done in all A thread(HT electra gold metallic and black nylon). This weave done in C, not packed and no finish, was one of the first pics in the Rodmaker gallery(black and white)and I was sorry I had sent it in as I didn't like it after it appeared. I like it better in A. It's on Steve Gustlins All American Roller Guides rod I'm working on.
