For my similar standup rod which used Calstar 760 and 765 blanks, I used hypalon top and bottom(don't like the harder eva), Aftco black reel seat(color goes with all color reels), I like the #2 size, may consider #3 depending on reel size. I don't use a gimbal but use a butt cap as I fish the rail with big tuna and wear a day belt. For guides, all my standups use Fugi SIC for less heat buildup a

When I was bottom fishing with a Penn 4/0 Electramate reel I always used a rail plate which was placed about 10" forward of the reel. the Plate then rested on the rail of the boat while fishing but allowed the rod to be lifted if and when so desired. I always used a 6'6" broomstick rod for this purpose as it was strictly bottom fishing for fish that never pulled any drag.

I build only saltwater rods, 10" would be the minimum buttwrap I'd put on a rod. the last several dozen I've made have had an approx 13" buttwrap with the first guide at the end of the buttwrap and a weave tween the winding check and start of the first guide wraps. Shorter trolling rods have much less room tween reel seat and first guide so I usually put a diamond wrap under the guides

I use Gudebrod HT A size metallics on all my saltwater rods, NO color preserver needed or should be used cause it will keep the finish from penetrating the wraps causing a much less stronger wrap. Never had a problem with 100's of rods

I've also extended several 40# class tuna rods by doing an inside insert, in my instances, I use a 6" piece of graphite golf shaft. I epoxied it into the blank first by creating a dam of sorts with a piece of cloth which i also epoxied in, then epoxied in the 6" piece, then epoxied over the 3" piece sticking out, the extension piece. I both instances, i used a piece of blank to ex

I understand that Mr. Kirkman is considering spending some of his obcene excess Rodmaker profits on establishing an old folks retirement home where admission will be limited to former rodbuilders who obsessed themselves into premature senilty. I also understand that your wife has submitted to Mr. K that you be considered for early admission to said facility-Mr. K has reserved suite #1 in your na

Up to 30 and sometimes 40# I like Fugi HNSG, 40# to 80# I like Fugi LRSG guides. Usually start with a 20 and work down to size 10. On heavier rods, I've started with the LRSG 25 and ended with a 12 and 12 tip with the larger ring helping with better heat disipation(my theory, have no idea if it works) I just put LRSG guides on a 40# class rod today, eyeballed each guides with no tools used. Neil, I'm curious why you state the first 180deg guide must be prior to where the blank flexes. I've wrapped many parabolic old Truline blanks where the that is not the case with no ill effects to date. What is your reasoning there??? thx

For A thread weaves using Gudebrod black nylon as the turning thread, I divide the number of turns by 4.75 and it usual is accurate to within 1mm of the actual weave length.

Moving the first guide farther from the reel seat will also raise the line height. On my 7' acid rods the first guide is usually 26-27" from the reel seat. I usually have a 12" hypalon foregrip and then a 13-15" buttwrap with the first guide at the end of the buttwrap which raises the guide somewhat. My first guide is usually at about 12 deg offset to the left with the next two gui

If you look at the pics on the photo page of my looms in action you'll see how to set up your loom, I used to have one of the wooden models like Mudhole now sells, Clemens used to sell the same thing if its the one that willhold 55 threads. Its ok but the spring that holds the threads tends to chew up metallic thread easily so be careful when using metallic. I use double stick tape over reg mask

I like Calstar blanks, for 50# I'd use the 760L, for 60# I'd use the 760M, if you're gonna fish the rail on the long range boats out of San Diego, you may wish to consider going to the 765L for 50 and the 765M/L for 60 which is what I use on summer trips for bft, acid wrapped of course with Fugi LRSG guides. My 760 series I used Aftco HD roller guides, gonna wrap a 765M this summer using the new

Once you get used to using A in your wraps, C & D will look like rope. A gives a much finer appearance with smoother transitions, A does take more time but then nothing comes easy. To me a classic case of you get what you pay for, A looks better but takes more time.

Metallics didn't hold up as well when used for weaving but otherwise very fine thread imo

I also use a high build finish but by careful application of finish to all three layers of thread avoid the "football" look which usually occurs when too much finish is applied.

Hi, As I mentioned to you via email, the Rodmaker logo weave was done in all Gudebrod A thread, black nylon for the turning thread and HT metallic and nylon for the weave threads. Most recent pic I posted, the Crystal Pier Charter 2004 was also done in all A thread, black nylon, HT gold and silver metallic. If I can be of further help, don't hesitate to email me questions.
