Hello, A customer wants a 12' 2 piece casting rod built to use for float (river bobber) fishing. Casting isn't as much of a concern as line payout as this will be a boat rod. I typically use the simple spiral (90* bumper to 180* runners) for bass rods which are typically 1 piece and a lot shorter. My question is, would the simple spiral still work; what are the pros and cons; would a 60*, 120*

+1 with Frank and Jess. The Batson XST blanks also offer good power, speed and weight with the MHX blanks being well suited for those who like more of a 'classic' float rod.

Looks like the M Power lathe I picked up at a local wood working store 4+ years ago. If it is, it has served me very well without a hint of trouble. I would recommend it for rod building.

The Batson XST blanks are very nice for the money...light and crisp with good power. Better still are the CTS Affinity Float blanks...even lighter and crisper with better power, but with a larger price tag.

I here ya! I had an issue with an MHX built in October and sent an email to warranty. Within the hour I received an email confirmig the shipment of the replacement! That's BEYOND exceptional!

If the damage isn't visible from the top of the grip (only seen when looking down the blank at the check). Then you could fill the voids and cover them with a larger check or hosel.

Could also be excessive heat causing the finish to 'skate'.

Thank you for all your suggestions! I'm looking for rings that are 1" wide rather than 1/2"; or cylinders rather than rings.

It depends on how the rod will be used. If your friend typically casts up stream and runs the drift down stream until the offering swings out of the line, then a tip top will suffice. If he opens the bail at the end of the drift and continues to run it by hand-feeding line, then he could also benefit from a running guide as a tip for the same reason Frank mentioned. On a float rod with a cente

Hello, Can anyone help ID or find this reel seat? It's similar to the Super Sticker, but it has a rubberized body that's integrated with the hood and threaded barrel. The important feature of this seat is the rubberized cork. It seems like Super Sticker uses a low grade natural cork that we're not too keen on. Thanks in advance for your help, Steve

Like others have said, there is no need to look at spey conversions these days. There are plenty of float rod blanks available that perform great, but without the added weight of a spey blank. If you're fishing large watersheds (Pacific Northwest) for fresh run Chinooks, then a spey might be in order. For Great Lakes and inland float fishing the manufacturers below have something for everyone.

The 13' 2 piece MHX is lighter on power and slower than the comparable XST. If I had to choose it would be the XST. If you commit to a casting rod, you won't be able to use it with a centerpin. A spinning set up offers you this option.

The number could also be their UPC or some other inventory-related numbers that have nothing to do with blanks specs.

+1 on the alcohol burner. I really like this method as it works and it rules out any debris storms.

Regardless of how long you have to wait, you can always lightly scuff the cured finish before recoating. I believe the max. time without having to scuff is 36 hours give or take.

I'd second the Never Dull. You can control where it is applied and it works great. I've used it to remove rust from chrome wheels and bumpers.

Thanks everybody.! I found a source for mirror (disco) ball motors. They are 5 RPM, self-contained, pre-plugged, quiet, stable and reasonably priced at $10.00. You can check them out here: . We decided on a 2 X 2 chuck setup in a 14" X 14" X 97.5" box that will have an 8' two light fluorescent fixture along the entire bottom for heat. They are low profile, which allowed us

Hello, We're looking to build a self-contained and dust-free drying cabinet with temp. control and a blank capacity minimum. We're on the fence regarding either a chuck or drum set up. Here are a few questions. 1) Would a drum dryer allow the finish to level properly be that the blanks are spinning off-axis? 2) Is there an in expensive source for stable 6-12 RPM motors? We'd also app

Hello, I'm looking for an 11' float rod blank that would handle 12-18 pound tippet to be used for King Salmon. I'm open to spey blanks, however weight is a concern. I'd appreciate any feedback you could offer especially on the CTS Affinity Plus DH 7/8 and 8/9 weight blanks. How would they compare to other blanks of the same line rating and could they stand up to the line weight? Thanks i

I accidentally sanded the decal before applying the finish coat. After an experiment, I decided that the finish coat would cover the scuff marks and all is good now. Thanks, Steve

Hello, While scuffing the finish for the final finish coat, I hit the clear area of the waterslide decal and scuffed it. It's in an area that I can't cut out, so I'm wondering if the finish coat will dry clear and fill in the scuffs, or will it dry cloudy? Thanks in advance for your help, Steve
