Hello again everybody, I'm putting together ideas for a rod wrapping work bench and wanted to solicit feedback. Your thoughts and ideas on length, height, features and over all construction would be greatly appreciated. Photos would also be great. Best regards, Steve

Hello everyone, How does the slow set ThreadMaster Ultimate Gel cure? Is it hard like regular epoxy or flexible like Rod Bond? Thanks, Steve

I picked up a complete set of mandrels from Fishsticks4U (site sponsor). The assortment comes in handy when building on different blanks. Using a stepped bit, I drill the holes to fit the mandrel closest to the thinnest OD of the blank. For example, if the OD at the winding check is .350, then I'll use a 5/16" mandrel and drill accordingly. This really saves time and effort reaming. I'v

The M guides are typically used for applications where keeping the line away from the blank is important such as a float rod. The theory is the line will pull off the spool with less resistance if contact with the blank is minimized. With fly or spinning rods, it makes little difference in function. They are light, but I doubt that they are lighter than the F guides you typically use.

Thanks Tom! You confirmed my thoughts on frame type and size. Spacing...that just takes a bit of time.

Hello everyone, I'm planning a build using the Rainshadow IF905 (9' 5 weight) and would like to use either Fuji Alconite or Amtak Titan F guides as runners instead of snakes or wires. I'd sure appreciate recommendations on size and spacing. Thank you in advance, Steve

I'd also swap the 7s with 8s for the same reason Danny mentioned. I fished GL tribs. too and the 8s are the smallest guide that won't freeze after every drift. As for grips, I like a 7" fore and 9-10" aft. Spacing depends largely on the blank taper, so start with your guidelines and refine them with static placement.

Hello, How do you guys turn handles out of dissimilar materials? I've seen cork, wood, metal, acrylic and who knows what else. I'd like to make cork, cherry wood and metal accent ring handles for an upcoming project, but not sure where to start. Thanks in advance, Steve

The 250 series is a good start. Personally I use either the 20 or 30 series Okumas with the sealed drag (Metaloid, Inspira, Alumina and Aveon). Absolutely bullet proof reels for winter steel.

Hello, I'm helping a friend build a float rod and he decided on adding gold (brass) accent rings in the cork handles. We're tight on time so we decided to glue them between the rings and turn the cork per usual. The problem is some of them are slightly off and not concentric with the cork. So I'm wondering if anyone can offer up suggestions on how to get a smooth and concentric transition f

Thanks everybody! I had to pace an order from a supplier that had the Rod Bond on back order. They recommended the Kardol, but didn't have everything I needed, so I ordered from a vendor that had it in stock. All is good. Steve

Hello, Just curious to know if anyone has the weights of the BYAG8J and the YSG8J guides. I was told that Alconite is lighter, but SiC is harder. Any truth to this? Thanks, Steve

Hello, Decided to lay down a thin coat of Flex Coat Lite over an underwrap. It sure made marking the centers and moving threads a lot easier! My question are: What should I do with the C.P. that ran off the decorative threads on to the finished basewrap? Will there be problems on down the road if not cleaned? If clean up is necessary, how should I go about it? Many thanks, Steve

Hello, This is a needle point pattern that my Aunt made. I'd really like to replicate it into a butt wrap pattern, but I wouldn't know where to begin, as I am a rookie. I'd sure appreciate any help you could offer. My knowledge only goes as far as basic diamonds and chevrons, so this would be a big step up. Thanks in advance, Steve

Hello everyone, I'm considering rebuilding a tip-heavy 13' steelhead float rod and the titanium guides got me thinking although I do have a case of sticker shock. Which companies other than Fuji offer a titanium allow frame? I see that AMTACK makes the TITAN, but I'm not sure how they compare to Fuji. Also, are there any good sources to pick them up at a reasonable price? Thanks in adv

I built a 13' float rod using a Rainshadow blank and absolutely love it. I've also built a few other using their blanks and they are great blanks for the money. If I were to build a fly rod, I'd start by looking @ Rainshadow blanks. Steve

Hello, A friend asked me to restore his vintage fiber glass St. Croix spinning rod and I have a few questions. The factory finish was thin and appears to have worn off. Is there a noninvasive way to remove the rest of it? And can Flexcoat light be used to refinish them; or does fiber glass require varnish? Thanks in advance, Steve

Thanks Mike and Randy! It's drying as I type and looks good. Just curious to know if the finish will hold up over time?Meaning...will the medallion fall out or will the Rod Bond/finish make for a fairly permanent bond? Steve

Hello, I'm putting a small medallion in a rubber (Fuji) butt cap and have to recess it a bit for it to hold and look right. My questions are can I use guide finish to fill in the recess and level the finish; or is there something else that will protect the inlay and hold it in place? Thanks, Steve

I ended up cutting away the rear grip and reaming a new one so it just slid over the blank. The butt section of the blank did not have much taper, so it worked out well. I did file groves the length of the grip so it would bond stronger. 2 weeks and a dozen fish later, all is well. Thanks again, Steve
