I used a candle warmer once and that was the last time. The time got away from me and I found the plastic bottle had start to melt and epoxy was all over the place. I now just set them in from a small heater during the winter months or I nuke them during the summer months if need be ( actually spring and fall).

It has been my understanding that these are rods that my have been broken in two some how, i.e. stepped on or slammed etc. The factory will deface them by removing the decals, crating them up, and then sell the lot. If rod was returned for a broken guide they will repair under warranty and send back.

I would use a hair dryer and place by hand on the backside of the guide while the rod is turning. By this I mean the rod is in my rod lathe turning and is between the hair dryer and my hand. That way I can monitor the heat while applying. The hair dryer will not get as hot as a heat gun.

Bill,
How do apply your coating when you use it? Also do you use it as a total replace for all of your thread wrap finish? Do you find it to be flexible so cracking isn't a problem.
Thanks

Thanks for posting the link.
Very interesting, no mention of CO2 being a contributing factor.

I had a small DC motor failed on me that was a direct connection to the rod chuck.
Sometimes a belt and sometimes the motor.

I purchased some of these a couple of years ago because the client wanted them and found them, but I would not recommend them. The finish is very durable and comes off easily. Just my 2 pennies.

Off blank. I have various sizes for mandrills made from steel rods. I also shopped garage sales for old rods that I can turn into framers. I have a large selection to pick from so final reaming is a snap. I also have various sizes in drill bits to match blank diameters.

16. Re: quick finish
I agree with what others have said. My concern was that if someone is suggestion to do something a certain way or that a certain way works for them. Then someone tries it don't get the same results if might be that they weren't told the "whole" story about the technique. Like in this situation about getting a rock hard finish in 6 hours if they mix their epoxy correctly might not be

Roger, when giving this advice can you also include what your room temperature is? I know that in my situation I have a fairly cool basement and my finish is still tacky in the morning when I apply it the evening before.

What size shaft do the Irwin bits have? Are they small enough to fit the 1/4" hole?

If the dent is in the butt cap, I will leave the butt cap off until the very end and then put it on. I will use a plastic butt cap if I need the extra diameter to work in the dryer and then just take it off and put the final one on when done with the rod.

You will achieve a more constant heat if the heat source is tied to a thermostat. You mentioned that the temperature can flucuate so you heat should flow that if you need a constant temp. Most likely you just need to elevate your overall curing temp.

23. Re: Tiger Wrap
What you need to do is experiment with them. What I've learned is that burnish only the bottom your finished tiger will likely have more vertical stripes. If you burnish the bottom and top (opposite directions to each other) you will achieve more disturbance between the two thread layers and greater effects.

John, how well does the guide stay on using the adhesive while test casting?
