Although I used 3 coats of color preserver, apparently it did not get under the guide feet because that's the only place there is a discoloration. Six of the guides were 4mm micros and they also showed the same problem. The color preserver did seem to have a higher than normal viscosity. Can CP be thinned to get better penetration ? Thanks.

I have had several instances of thread discoloration lately. It is occurring only where the thread goes over the guide feet. It is dark and appears to run down from the feet on both sides. It occurs after the first epoxy application. I am using the same components, color preserver, and epoxy that I always use. I would think it has to be related to the guide feet or something I'm doing. Any ideas

Joe,
Weighed the 5/16 oz. jig with the chunk on my grain scales. Fully loaded weight is .41 oz. A 3/8 with chunk probably would go over .5 oz. I'll probably go with the 5C70MHF blank. Thanks for all the input.

All of these are SCV blanks. I just need some input on the specific model SCV blank to use. I have not used an SCV Medium Heavy blank before. Thanks.

Hey guys, I need some help with this one.
I have been asked to build a finesse pig/jig casting rod using an SC V casting blank. First thoughts are to use a MH blank, either the 5C70MHF-B or the 5C71MHXF-B. This is going to be used with 10# line and 5/16-3/8 oz. jigs. Based on the specs, I'm thinking these blanks might be too heavy. Would a 5C70MF-B blank be more suitable for this application ?

Thanks for the info. I've never cleaned the guide feet after preping, but I'll begin doing this as a precaution.

The guide feet were right out of the package. They are black. I ground the tips on a bench grinder and polished with 400 grit sandpaper. This has never happened before, so I don't understand why. Since this is a spinning rod, the darkening cannot be seen from the top.

I have just finished the last of 5- SC5's (olive green) using desert camo thread. All look great except the thread on the last one. The thread turned very dark where the thread wraps over the guide feet on three of the wraps ! All rods were done with the same type and color thread, three coats of color preserver from the same bottle, Threadmaster lite, no coloring on the guide feet, just ground

The old Fenwick looks like new. Most of the problem was dirt and grime. I cleaned and scrubbed with Simple Green, did not rough up the old wraps, coated with TM lite, sanded the cork, and it looks great. Thanks again.

The customer really does not want the guides removed and wrapped. I will try cleaning, lightly buffing with 400 grit, and coating one wrap with Threadmaster light. If it looks ok, I'll proceed with the rest. Thanks again for all the advice.

I have been asked to refinish an old graphite Fenwick fly rod. After inspecting the wraps, they appear ok. The finish on the wraps is about gone. What is the best way to proceed ? My thoughts were to wipe down the rod and simply recoat the thread wraps, then clean and sand the cork grip? I've never done a dedo so I would appreciate any advice ? Thanks.

Not sure of the unit. The insignia is a blue patch with white wings and red sword with "AIRBOURNE" over the top.

I have a customer/buddy who wants his old Airborne Unit decal applied to his rod that I am building. I have a print of the image that I can reduce to the proper size. I have read many of the posts regarding decals, but I'm still not sure how to proceed. Can someone direct me to an article on how to do this ,Start to Finish ? Thanks.

I'll definitely tape and test cast. I have a 6'-9" M built with a # 6 stripper and 4's. However, it has a totally different action from this blank. I'll try using the 6'-9" rod stripper distance and move out 3" to start. Thanks for the replies.

I have built several casting rods using static guide placement. I am ready to build a 7' MH casting rod. I want to use static guide placement as before. However, I do not remember the guidelines for locating the stripper guide. The stripper is a #6 , the rest are # 4 micros. I have no problem determining the micro guide locations. Can someone suggest a starting point for the stripper guide ? Than

I normally use U-40 Rod Bond when glueing reel seats and cork grips. No problems. However, my current container of the resin looks like a paste, like it has crystalized. Is this ok to use or does it need something ? Thanks in advance for your help.

That's what I have done on approximately 6 builds. I did shape the edge of the butt and added an SK2 winding check for appearance. No problems.

Thanks for all the advice. My specific problem is reaming out the Fuji SK2 reel seat EVA grips which have a very small I.D.

What is the best way to ream EVA grips ? I have tried several bit types ,including forstner bits. I don't like the results. Thanks in advance for your help.

20. CP Question
I have done several marbeling jobs with good results. I am doing my first marbeling on the actual guide wraps. I'm using white CP thread . Do I need to add a coat of CP on the wrap before proceeding with the epoxy and marbeling ? Thanks in advance for your advice.

21. Need EVA Help
I have been asked to remove a cork grip and replace it with a split EVA grip on a G.Loomis rod. I have done this very succesfully several times using cork ,working from the butt. Everything I read says EVA needs a tight fit. Will this be possible from the butt ? Can the adhesive fill the gap on the top end ? Do I use contact cement or epoxy ? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am wrapping a spinning blank using only metallic thread. It appears that this thread does not have the elongation or elasticity like conventional nylon thread. Are there any special measures that need to be taken when using metallic thread ? Thanks for any help.

Can you alternate rod finishes(one coat Flex Coat - one coat Thread master Light ) ? Or vice versa ? Thanks.

I have built several rods with split grips using the SK2 seats and the winding checks.Yes, you must size the I.D. of the winding check to fit the O.D. of the blank where you will locate the seat.. While the winding checks fit snugly into the SK2 reel seats, there is a word of caution. Cut the graphite reel seat arbors off 1/16" short of the reel seat ends. If you don't, the winding check wil

I have experienced the same problems using FC Lite in a 60 degree basement. I would advise moving it upstairs to coat as well. However, I would advise waiting until the wife turns in for the night to begin. Good Luck.

I agree that the old quill pen with Testors' metallic model paint works best. I have had decent results painting a small band with the metallic paint and then signing on top with a fine tipped marker also.

I have just built a 6'-8" Casting Rod on a St. Croix V blank using micro guides. I like it so much that I would like to build a spinning rod on the same blank. Can I use the same "casting" blank or do I need to order a "spinning " blank with similar specs ? I used 1- #6 as a stripper guide with the other 11 guides being #4 micros. What would be your recommendations for gu

I need some advice. I have an expensive rod that I was applying Flex Cote light over the wraps and deco when a gnat lit in the epoxy over the deco at the butt. The epoxy was wet when this happened. I got the insect out and tried to smooth it out before it dried but it made some dull and rough spots over the area. What can I do to correct this situation ? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
