Hey guys, I need some help with this one.
I have been asked to build a finesse pig/jig casting rod using an SC V casting blank. First thoughts are to use a MH blank, either the 5C70MHF-B or the 5C71MHXF-B. This is going to be used with 10# line and 5/16-3/8 oz. jigs. Based on the specs, I'm thinking these blanks might be too heavy. Would a 5C70MF-B blank be more suitable for this application ? I have built 12-15 rods using the SC V blanks, but have never used a MH blank. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Re: Help with Blank Selection

Uh, if you were asked to build it using an SC V blank, why not just use an SC V blank? Re: Help with Blank Selection

All of these are SCV blanks. I just need some input on the specific model SCV blank to use. I have not used an SCV Medium Heavy blank before. Thanks. Re: Help with Blank Selection

I can tell you this much, whenever you see that "X" in the St. Croix model number, you're going to be talking about an extremely fast action blank. Very, very light tip quickly followed by a very powerful mid and butt. So if that's what you want, the "X" model will give it to you. The MHF is going to have similar power model for model, but will have a more gradual taper from tip to mid. Still fact, but not nearly as drastic as the "X" fast model.

David,
Are those jig weights the total weight jig, pig, skirt and all, or the manufacturers listed weights? If they are the listed weights, your customer will likely need the tip of the 5C70MHF to pull the jigs through shallow rock and wood cover. A 3/8oz. jig with a skirt and trailer can push well over 1/2oz. total weight very quickly, especially if the jig comes from a manufacturer that uses heavier than advertised weights. I find that when working with my XF action rods that I need to keep the lead close to the lower limit of the rod's lure range when working shallow. If those are the total weights of the jig, then I would take a hard look at the 5C70MHXF. I wouldn't drop down in blank power until you start fishing jigs with 1/8oz. or less lead, even with the lighter line. Another thing that will help determine what your customer needs is to find out what he doesn't like about the current rod he is using. Is the tip too stiff? Is there too much power in the butt for what he wants?, etc. This will help narrow things down a bit for you as well. Joe Re: Help with Blank Selection

Joe,
Weighed the 5/16 oz. jig with the chunk on my grain scales. Fully loaded weight is .41 oz. A 3/8 with chunk probably would go over .5 oz. I'll probably go with the 5C70MHF blank. Thanks for all the input. Re: Help with Blank Selection
