I have been looking at Microwave guides, and reading reviews. Lots of people think highly of them. Can anyone point me to data that looks at the casting distance one might get from them vs, for example, a Fuji KR Concept setup? I have been using Fujis for years and have been pleased. Always happy to try something new if there is good reason to do it. One reason I hesitate is that the running guid

64. Which spine?
I'm making 12 foot overhead on a 4 wrap medium taper fibreglass blank.
Overheads on such soft rods are prone to turning under load if the spine is not accurately chosen.
A quick palm roll suggests that my blank has two 180 degree opposed spines.
Do I want to use the weaker of these two spines? My plan was to affix the rod and attach a small weight to the end and test which spine bends the most

Hi:I looked in the library but no mention of this.
When locating the spine on a 4 piece fly rod
do you spine each piece individually?
Seems like this would be necessary except for the butt piece maybe...

68. feeling
I enjoy using the CCS, it’s all about numbers, without numbers we have nothing.
All said and done, the bottom line is FEEL? This is what I do, with rod and
line I go out in my yard and do some roll casting, I start with 10 ft, 20 ft, than 30 ft.
If I don’t get that feeling, I change line size and try again. I always put the
guides on the natural curve, this puts the spine on to top for doi

I think I remember what they were - Outside vs Inside when locating the static spine on a black.
Not sure if it was exactly Out Side Curve At Rest or not.
Any idea? Thanks.

I have now built 3 rods using the G2 Handel kit matched with the cct aero reel seat. 2 spinning rods for me and one for a customer using the split grip kit. They are light weight, easy to instill, look good, and you can customize the handle length to fit your needs. Handel has good grip even when wet or covered in fish slime. I pair this Handel set up with An NFC SJ706 LMX Delta 1/4-1 oz 10-17 lb

Hey guys. I just got a new 6'6" med. fast action inshore blank. While checking it out trying to decide what exactly I want to do I was sighting down the rod and notice at about 5'4" or so from the butt end there is a subtle bend. I chucked the rod into my wrapper and turned it on the dryer motor. The bend equates to about a 5/16" wobble at the tip. The wobble is pretty much on the

72. Spine Confusion
I just saw a video, , where a fellow explained rod spine as where the layers of graphite (young fellow, never heard of fiberglass) overlap as the material is rolled on the mandrel. Where the end of the material acts with the beginning of the material to create a stronger side, thus forming the spine. He further explains how the spine must be placed as the rod bends so the rod doesn’t twist under

73. Downrigger rod
Up to now I have only wrapped one piece 7-8 foot off shore rods and know you need to find the spine for placing the reel seat and guides. I just purchased a couple of lamiglas downrigger blanks and I am wondering if you need to find the spine for these rods? I placed the butt half of the blank with the end wrapped in masking tape to make it fatter so it fit better in my spine finder and put a ben

Hey Y'all.
Since I'm new and I know people can be overly harsh whilst being blunt (I like people being blunt), I hope people will keep their replies to a dull level of harshness.
I love my fly rods. I love fishing in general, but fly fishing is what I have the most fun with. My rods are beginning to become a pain to pack away, and its hard to find a proper case at a reasonable price. There

I wonder what are the three most common false beliefs or conclusions held by rod builders about building rods?

I have read various threads here that discuss the best way tp place guides on the rod. Some say to place the guides on the belly, while other state that placing the guides on the stiffest spine is best. Still others favor a corkscrew orientation. From an engineering standpoint, I know that the lifting power o fthe rod comes from the bottom end of the rod blank. So, a hybrid approach makes sen

The tip-top is the ONLY guide which influences the direction of our casts. Is there some way to observe and measure the path of a rod-tip during a cast to see how far it deviates from the path (plane) of the rest of the rod ? This information would be more valuable than imagining how "soulful" a rod is.

78. Crooked blank
I bought a blank, spined it and have the handle on it. I happened to look down the blank from the handle side and noticed it is crooked starting about 20” from the tip. Should I be concerned about this? Not sure how to get the guides lined up? And, the first this a customer usually does is look down the blank to see how the guides look.
Not sure how to post a picture on here to show it but i

I have been reading the forum for a while now without posting and have finally had enough of people spouting RUBBISH about how the spine doesn't matter..
It does matter - a LOT
I tested all my rods by hand and those that had a strong spine which weren't spine built torque twisted horribly under load - the effect was obvious, horrible, and very detrimental - basically a terrible lack of sensiti

Hey everyone!
I'm a beginner rod builder (in my 30s) and I am working on making my first custom build from top to bottom. I've been a fisherman since I could walk, but I never dived into the intricacies of more advanced fishing. I've recently grabbed a few spinning rods/reels and have been fishing heavily the last few months (focusing on finesse ned/neko rigs, worming texas/carolina, and sm/

83. X-ray mb736
I liked my first X-ray 736 I built so I purchased another one. But the blank diameters on the new one are way bigger and the blank definitely has more power to it. The butt is .632” vs the listed .490” and the tip is 2.18mm vs the listed 1.7mm. I did contact nfc and the reply was these are just “normal variations in the materials” and I could send it back but it “may not be quick” to receive my

84. informed choices
Rod blank fabricators use prepreg graphite fabric from a limited number of producers, use bonding agents from a limited number of suppliers, and employ mandrels to shape rod blanks from an even smaller number of alternatives. Advertising and pricing are not reliable guides to the performance of rods or rod blanks, any more than the most expensive, hyped-up golf clubs will perform best for the vas

I have a new CTS Quartz CristalGlass blank. with a gorgeous lime-green finish. In removing some thread wraps due to an imperfection, I accidentally removed a little paint. Can anyone recomend a paint, or ink that will adhere to this very smooth rod blank. I want to make this little piece of the blank beautiful again. Any help would be appreciated.

Greetings. I've been building rods for just over a year now. I've got a few under my belt. I build inshore saltwater spinning and casting along with fly rods for both salt and fresh (trout in NC). I build for myself, friends and family. As one of those people that likes details and data I have started to work with the Common Cents System. I've built myself a fixture for supporting rods in a repet

I am building a dipsey diver 8-6 M I feel it’s a tad light. I have done a static deflection test and have a layout that is close enough but not perfect. I’m using boat rod style guides. I’m wondering if there is a way using thread to do an extended underwrap or some other method to stiffen up the blank a bit. It will be a conventional wrap not a spiral wrap. Btw.
All suggestions are welco

I just received my New 3 weight, 7"6" Quartz Crystal Glass rod blank today, and am looking forward to buiolding this rod. I have looked up several online charts, and they all differ a bit. Does anyone have experince with this rod build, and if so, is there a recommended rod guide spacing chart?
Thanks in advance.

Just cannot win it seems. Ordered a rainshadow blank. Got the wrong blank in the right package. Sent it back. got the correct blank. SOB is this crooked. Has two changes of direction the upper about two feet. If I roll it on a table blank goes from touching at the tip to nearly 3/8s of an inch off the table. When the tip touches about a foot down I got a section about a foot long that is nearly

Hello, new to the forum, new to rod building. I hope someone can help. I am getting ready to build a 4 pc, 9 ft 6 wt. How important is it to find the spine on the butt section? I am not so worried about the other 3 sections, But I have read that it is just about as easy to break this section as it is to find the spine.
