91. Finding Spine
Apparently I am either stupid or physically challenged, I cant for the life of me make a rod do anything when i am trying to spine it. I have watched the mudhole video repeatedly, bought the crb spine finder and I cant make putting it on a flat surface and bending it towards the ceiling or using the spine finder and bending it towards the ground work. I have tried rolling it, pinching it and cuss

92. Rodgeeks blanks
I'm an older guy and don't like change so I haven't wanted to fish with or build on a one piece rod. However, I think I might be changing. I have always been a St. Croix fan. I was not happy when they started having another company take over most of their blank building. I talked with a couple people recently and was told that St. Croix now bought out RODgeeks but is keeping the name and factory

Hi guys,
Ok, so I have 2 Rainshadow 6'2" spinning rod blanks (fast and xfast) for walleye jigging. From an earlier post, it was suggested to place reel seat at around 8 to 10 inches from the butt. With the microwave guides, I now have, they overlap of how American would space the guides. They have a 2 step process in measuring. First is to measure from the lip of the spool and plac

While I'm waiting for my NFC MB736 XRay to come in, I'm trying to figure out the guide train. I haven't decided on whether I'll spiral wrap it or not, but I'm considering both options for now. I've read through more than a few posts on the forum, but haven't read much on using the newer KR concept guides for spiral wrapping. Here are the options that I'm debating...

While I'm waiting for my dropshot blank and components to come in, I'm searching for a good option for an all around casting blank. Here are the criteria I'm looking for, what I'll use it for, and the options I've found so far.
Criteria
-Light Build around 3.5 to 4oz total built
-6'10" - 7'2" Length
-Lure Range around 1/4oz - 1oz
-Preferably a Slightly moderate side of Fast Acti

I am building a 4 piece fly rod. I am at the point of trying to align the pieces to find the axis for the guides. What process do you use to find the axis when dealing with multiple piece rods? Also, how big/small of a loop is acceptable for the tip when rotating the blank?

I bought a Tsunami slow pitch acid wrapped rod last year and was thinking of removing the guides to make it a straight guide alignment rod. My only dilemma is if by doing so would effect the torque on the rod. I don`t know if the rod was spined correctly by the manufacturer.

I have been building rods and teaching rod building for a few years. When I get to guide placement I use the same process I think most of us do. Place the guides where we think they belong, then test to see if the "arc" looks right and adjust from there. I have been doing that for probably 30+ years of building. But in all those years I never knew (or really tried to find out) why I

99. rod balance
Hi, Folks. I am starting a glass spinning rod and want to use the balance point to position the reel seat. I put the reel on the seat and slid it onto the blank. Then I taped the fore and rear grips onto the outside of the blank (I don't want to ream the cork until I know where it goes). Trouble is, I would have to cut 2-3" off the butt of the blank to have reasonably good balance. Is th

Hey guys/gals,
I had a difficult time finding anything about this so I’m posting it here in the hopes that someone here can help me. I’ve been working on a DIY power rod wrapper using an old sewing machine motor and miscellaneous parts I have lying around the shop. I know I need to slow the motor down using pulleys and a reduction ratio but I’ve had a @#$%& of a time finding suitable pulleys o

Started to apply epoxy on thread last night and noticed where I marked the spine the residual from the mark is bleeding thru or showing. I cleaned all my marks rubbing thread across them first and then wiping with alcohol. I don’t see anything where I marked guide placement but now concerned that there’s still some residual left on the blank. This is the first matte blank that I’ve used is there

102. Micro Guide Spacing
Hello All
I am new to the forum. I have built about 9 rods scince starting this hobby a couple of years a go. Ive built 5 rods for bass fishing using St.Croix blanks and the rest have been rod kits from MudHole. I am in the process of building a bass rod using a St. Croix 2SW76MHF (7'6" - MH). I plan on using Mico Guides on the blank. Called St.Croix and they said it would work but would no

What is your position on the building of fly rods regarding placement of the spine? More power on the fighting of the fish and back cast stroke, or more power on the loading for the forward casting stroke. I've been told that more power on the forward stroke can cause the tip to move in ellipses causing casting problems.

104. science vs adspeak
From testing airplane wings to tuning piano strings the desirable (and undesirable) qualities of objects that bend and oscillate are tested, observed, and compared to a desired ideal. This enables the buyer/user to make a dependable and useful comparison of oscillating objects, including fish-rod blanks. It is neither difficult nor expensive to determine how a particular rod blank oscillates or t

105. Spiral Wrap layout
I did a search for Spiral Wrap and Acid Wrap but none came up, so if there is a thread (pun) on it already, please point me in the right direction. Otherwise... I understand the concept and theory behind the spiral wrap but I haven't found any information on setting it up. I'm looking for a straight answer on: Which spline to use, Casting or spinning? Number of guides? Degrees of rotation?.

106. Blank Defects?
I recently purchased two blanks direct from a manufacturer. I did a quick inspection of both blanks when they arrived. One blank was perfect, but the other blank has a few areas that concern me. The blank has areas where a clear plastic film is trapped between the carbon wraps. It also has multiple areas where there are fibers (thread or carbon?) on the surface of the blank. The fibers appear to

I bought a Tsunami slow pitch acid wrapped rod that is giving me a problem. The line often gets wrapped around the tip. Anyway I want to rewrap the rod into the conventional straight guide format. The only issue is that I`m having trouble finding the spine of the rod. I don`t know if the true spine was established on this store bought rod at all.

108. Rod blank repair
I have attempted to post photos of the damage I will describe below, but they are not uploading.
This is the same 13 wt fly rod I proposed repurposing into a spinning rod.
The damage is a friction burn caused when I jerry rigged the blank in my cork lathe to reshape the handle. I used a rubber band over a cloth to apply downward pressure because the blank kept jumping out of the cradle. (No

Hello All
First of all, let me say that I have built a number of rods, but am NOT what one would call a Rod Builder. Perfection usually eludes me.
A few years ago, I bought 2 blanks and components from a local shop. On these 2 rods, and these 2 only, I've been having problems with the guides. Last season, I noticed the foot of one guide had pulled out from under the wrap but didn't think to

I am a learner when it comes to fly fishing and building fly rods. And Math is not my strong suit but nonetheless I can get by. I have 2 fly rods I'm working on and decided to try out the common cents approach.
#1 is a Hook and Hackle marketed as a 10wt and if I did it right I had 88 "shiny cents" ERN 10.7 and AA of 70 seems about right
#2 is a Rainshadow Eternity marketed as an 8

112. Crooked Tip
I have a 7' RODgeeks C2 L-F cut down to a 6'6". Spine is found. Cork handle reamed and ready to glue on and I eyed down it on my test fit before actually gluing it and the blank has a very noticeable bend in it about 12" from the tip. If I where to glue the handle and put the guides on in this location it would be very noticeable. Any suggestions as to how to resolve this. I have anothe

Still not sure about pulling the trigger, but thinking about selling custom rods. How do you handle rod warranties?
I know that the blank mfg's have a warranty for the blanks. Other than the guides and blank you would have to
rebuild the rod. How do other handle this?

114. Logo on Sage Blank
‘Morning all.
I just received a 9wt Sage Salt HD blank for a build. Does anyone have advice on how to remove the silk screened logo on the blank? They are never in the right place and often off axis to the spine I want to use (not that it matters that much in a butt section)
I recently did a Sage Mod and the black ink used in the logo came off with acetone in a wile or three. For a Sage X w

I am under the undestanding that for the most part, on the guide system, your stripper guide should be around half the diameter of the reel spool size correct? This is for spinning rods of coarse.. I know theres alot of other factors to concider as well.. Just want to make sure im correct in this..

I generally build to the straightest axis and forget about it on spinning rods. But I started using some blanks that generally have a very pronounced spine - they are smaller diameter slightly heavier wall, bass and walleye type spinning rods.
With the really pronounced spine, and wanting to jump to a particular spot when checked, I'm having a hard time not building to the spine on them.

Getting ready to wrap. My guide placement puts a guide close to the ferrule. If I wrap my ferrule as I have in the past then wrap the guide I will have only about a half inch gap between the two. Cannot deice if I should wrap it all as one or leave the gap. If I wrap as one I will have a little over two inches. Other than my visual preference any concern of having that much wrap over the ferrule

119. New Guy with ???
Hello, I have 3 rod builds to my name in the last 6 years, so I'm very much a novice. So far I've built a 5 Wt, a 8 Wt and a 12 Wt. I just ordered 2 casting rod kits from mudhole. One kit is a MHX MB843 and the other is a MHX L842. Both with cork split grips. These rods will have Abu 5601 C4's on them that are currently spooled with diawa J-braid X8 30 lb braid with a flouro leader and will

120. Spine Question
Ok watched too many youtube videos and got confused again. Looking for thoughts on spine location of a blank and how to orientate guides to the spine.
I have always used a spine finder that holds the blank horizontal. I roll the blank as I bend the the tip to the floor. Now is the spine on the top of the blank or the bottom? Inside the bend or outside?
Been awhile since I have built rods.
