Hi guys. I just built my first tuna rod. I used roller guides. I would like to ask a few questions. The rod is by no means perfect... I never managed to get the finish to be perfectly even and blemish free. I used a medium build epoxy. Should I have used high build? I know techniques has a lot to do with it. There are little bumps and valleys on some guides. What have I done wrong? Some of the gu

62. Finish questions
Hi rodbuilders,
I finally finished my first rod and I have a few questions regarding finish (I dun goofed).
I tried to heat the finish using a lighter and one of the problems I ran into is it started making dimples/hills a few times when I did this. I think it's because I got it too hot, would that be a correct assumption? I uploaded a pic to imgur, couldn't figure out how to upload to th

63. Locking Wraps
Hello,
I am a new rod builder. In the past year have built 5 rods, each looking better than the one before. I am in the process of rod #6. On this spinning rod, digital camp grips, sanded 7 ft med blank and single foot guides, I am wanting to add a locking wrap to each guide. In Tom's book he talks about using a security wrap behind the guide leg. I have also read and watched the videos

Picked up an older Sage RPLXi rod and most of the epoxy over the ferrules and guide wraps is crazed (small "spider" cracks) likley from extended UV exposure (I think).
Anyways, I wanted to put a thin coat of Flex Coat ove the wraps to make them look shiny and new again and had a couple of questions:
- Do I sand/roughen-up the old epoxy with a light abrasive sandpaper or just prep

I have read every thread in this forum I could find on the subject. I have applied every technique I have read on this subject and there is a ton of opinions out there. What the heck is going on? My guide wraps look great. But that section 3-5" section of rod that I want a decal on will not level!
I am talking pre decal and post decal. The decal is not the problem. Its ME it has

68. Strange Question
I am working on a rod for a customer. He wanted nothing fancy, just a gunmetal grey thread wrap on his guides. No trim wrap at all on his guides. I did as he wanted, but now he wants me to change the thread wraps to an orange color. I do not want to cut these wraps off, already have three coats of lite build on them.If I wrap over the epoxy with new thread, then epoxy over them, will this add too

Hi guys, I've got several questions for you. I'm using micro guides on a hydra blank (7'6") flipping stick and I'm finding it very difficult to use the guide adhesive effectively. The directions say to use a thin film, but I did that and on my static test they didn't hold. I then re-attached them using more, which did work, save one guide. What is the best way to attach these little PITAs (u

Im sure I already know the answer. Would I compromise the integrity of a blank if i were to shave the tip in order to get a half size smaller tip top. Just being impatient. Would be a week or more waiting on size 6 tip top when I have a 5.5 sitting on the bench.

I'm trying to remove the thread wraps from an early 90's Daiwa rod. This stuff won't budge. It took me about two hours to get the guides cut loose, and what's left behind is the most stubborn epoxy I've ever seen. Tried heating with a hair dyer, lighter, alcohol lamp and hot water; to no avail. It simply will not soften.
Any ideas?

I've been strolling through photos of finished guide wraps and I have noticed some of the them have very crisp, clean edges to the thread finish while others do not. Is there a method to getting these nice edges or just lots of practice? In my mind's eye, I imagine the possibility of applying tape to get a good line, applying finish and then removing the tape to get that nice edge?

One of the single foot guides has become loose on a fly rod I just finished. It hasn't seen much use, but I can remove and then reinsert the guide into the wraps. None of the others have this, so I'm assuming I didn't wrap it well enough, this was my first build. What is the best way to remove the old permagloss finished wraps so I can rewrap the guide?

Up till now I have been building float rods for steelhead and salmon and light spin rods and one boat rod. Now I am re building a 25 year old 12 foot surf rod for a friend. The guides on it are huge. The size 50 stripper guide feet has a span of over four inches. My questions: When removing the old guides, there is what appears to be white paint under the underwrap. It came off pretty eas

I am just asking if anyone has tried there new micro guides or have had a head start in the use of there new line of micro guides. I am looking for constructive input on there use and there ease of application to a build. I did notice the foot on these guides are much different than the other brands out there. It looks enticing and I think they have something there for the builder in mind for con

Hi,
I'm rebuilding an old Orvis HLS 9' 9 wt fly rod into a spinningrod. So everything is being removed which left me with a problem I've never encountered before. The varnish og epoxy from the guide wraps seems impossible the remove completely and since the new guides are being laid out differently than the old ones I need to get rid of any old varnish. A small amount of whitish/greyish varnish

77. Removing guides
What is the easiest method to remove snake guides from a fly rod? I broke the tip section which is being replaced but I need the guides for the repair. I removed one of the four already by cutting the epoxy with a razor blade. It wasn't easy and I just feel there is an easier way. Would applying heat help at all?

78. old guide wraps
I have an older rod and the guide wrap epoxy has yellowed and is chipping. How do I remove the epoxy? I do not want to remove the guides, they are in good shape. The wraps look in goo shape.

I have a Sage Xi2 saltwater rod that I built about about a year and a half ago. The guide wraps turned out beautiful. It was the first rod I used Threadmaster finish on. On the butt section, however, I put a fish decal on the opposite side of the Sage logo. I don't know if it didn't get clean enough or what, but it fisheyed a bit on a couple spots pretty bad. I tried to sand it down and leve

Hey everyone,
I saw a rod like this in an antique store. Please excuse my ignorance but would someone please explain the reasoning and use of the 2 guides on exact opposite sides of the rod at the same location?

My friend broke his Castaway 6'6", 2 inches above the reel seat, trying to take the seat off, using pliers, how would sleeve, I really don't know what to call it, its to hold the 2 parts together, then I would wrap it, maybe with a tiger wrap, and hope that it will hold, he is really to busy to work on it, so i thiought I will give him a hand.

84. refinishing
I have a rod that I am doing some work on.
It is the 2nd or 3rd rod I made. I made this rod for my brother in 1974 or 1975. The chevron has come loose and broken in a few places. All of the Guide wraps are intact, it is just the chevron that is "bad". He told me "do not change the guide wraps just the butt wrap". I have taken the chevron thread off and am now I am goin

I have a rod that just came off the dryer, and want to put another coat of finish on it, but I used up the last of my finish of that brand on this rod. I have some other brands of finish immediately available though. Would it work out OK if I lay a coat of brand "B" on top of a cured coat of brand "A" to get my new rod on the water sooner? Or would I be best off ordering some

Normally I don't coat between the front and rear wraps on double foot guides I put on my bass rods, perhaps because I usually transition to single foot guides. But since I used all double foot guides and some #6 double foot guides for the last 3, where the distance between front to back is minimal I decided to epoxy in the gap between the thread wraps for those and all of the others guides on th

89. CP Glue
Hi,
This is my first post so go easy on me guys.
Have started to build my first fly rod and have now reached the stage of whipping the guides.
Finding it a tad tough going with getting the tag ends to stay put and not unwind. Have had a look at some ideas and come across a suggestion to dab a small amount of CP glue to help hold them in place.
As I live in the UK, I've not heard of CP and was
