Is D size thread a lot easier to work with than A, and can it be used on micro guides and if I used D for my wrapping would the trim bands need to be D also. I ask because I am currently wrapping my crankbait rod and I am really struggling, one it's the first time using the alps thread carrier and two first time using black thread and really having a hard time seeing it. I cant seem to get th

Just read the article on Magic wands in my Rodmaker mag, great article. I owned and just sold 8 JB Customs rods that were all spiral wrapped, I must say I liked those and especially all the casting type baits, especially the crankbait rods. The Pitching rod was nice as well but you had to make sure the line was not layed over to the right side of the tip top ( I pitch with the bait in my left ha

Just static tested my Point Blank PB731MXF and everything looked good with 2 line test. My only question is should the line touch the top of the guide closest to the reel, Mine runs right through the center of the guide, line follows guide for the most part under tension, just wondering about that first guide or does that matter. It is 21" in front of the reel( from the line guide of the re

I am looking for the best way to cut a home-made carbon fiber handle to get the cleanest, straightest edge to match up to a butt cap or other fitting. This carbon fiber handle will not go inside the adjacent fitting but instead will just butt right up to it. So the cut edge will be exposed and needs to be perfectly straight around the circumference. I am making the handles on my lathe. I am t

First off, thanks to everyone on this forum for your willingness to share your knowledge and experience with those of us that are new to rod building. I've completed 3 fly rods over the last month and have 2 more waiting to be built. For all of my builds so far I've been using Snake brand low-profile stripping guides since I've been using snake universal running guides. I know there are a lot of

Question, is it recommended to wrap a couple times around the end of a micro guide, saw it on Flex Coat video, thanks.

Guides keep lines moving straight through the guide train and keep lines from flopping around becoming fouled. More guides add leveraged weight, which is bad. Monofilament lines are several times stiffer than gel-spun braids and behave differently while moving through the guide train, but this difference isn't recognized in charts for the numbers and spacing of guides. Should it be?

In search of a particular PacBay tip. It is the TiBronze FXT micro. This is the only Tibronze offering with a ceramic ring in a smaller ring size. EFXZT04 is the model number. Looking for tube size 4.0 4.5 and 5.0. A PT model would work if I had no other choice but those are a 6 ring which will just look odd I think with minima runners. I cannot find those either though. Exact model is EPZT06. I

Hi...hope you all are healthy and happy and staying safe! I have a question about guide spacing...more guides vs less guides on a spinning rod. What is the benefit, if any of using more guides? I read some recommendations where they recommend 6 guides and others 10 guides. I am just starting a build on a North Forks IM 2 piece spinning blanks and they recommend 6 guides. I'm not necessarily the

Hello, I'm new to this forum and working on my first build/rebuild of a blank I used and loved in my younger years. I decided to go with the KR concept after doing much research. Since I knew I'd be putting some time into this I went with Titanium SiC. I am having an issue with my reduction train achieving the bullseye configuration with the first three guides (stripper, 2nd reducer, 3rd reducer

I notice that fly lines are all about the same diameter, within a few thousandths of an inch, yet fly guides are offered in many quite different sizes. And it seems that the lighter weight rods get the smaller guides, and the heavier weight rods get the bigger ones. I can see why one wouldn't want any extra weight on the rod, especially the lighter power rods, but why are so many sizes needed?

I did a quick search on the forums to see if there any posts regarding American Tackle's TiForged Guides, and saw that there were pretty minimal posts online. I'm only familiar with Fuji guides, and wanted an opinion on how they compare when using them for running guides. I like Fuji's RV-6 stripper guide and their Arowana tiptop, so I'll likely use those, but could I use American Tackle's size

My son and I after building about 25 or 30 rods have realized we are still pretty ignorant when making guide choices. We have only built freshwater but are going to build a few saltwater inshore rods for a family vacation. We have only built our freshwater series with about 3 different guide styles. This is due to the fact that there are so many guide styles to choose from that it is almost mind

Does it hurt to wrap over the tape that is holding the guide in place on the small micro guides, I dont have much room to tape and then start the wrap, tried glue stick but that did not work out that well.Thank you.

I just read the article from the library, is this the best way to lay out the guides for a rapid reduction system on a spinning rod, freshwater shaky head or drop shot rod. I want to learn the best practices for my rod building. Thank you.and forgive me if this question has been beat to death, I am brand new at this with only one rod under my belt and I just used the spacing guide from Fuji and t

So I'm at the point where I'm doing the static testing on a rod build. Rod is Point Blank 731MXF paired with Daiwa Ryoga 1060 casting reel. Right now I have 9 running guides (Fuji KW #5), and 3 reduction guides. The reduction guides are KWR#6 (stripper), #5.5 double foot, and #5.5 single foot. Being a newbie, I'm not sure what is acceptable line lay when the rod is flexed 90 degrees. When I d

While I'm waiting for my NFC MB736 XRay to come in, I'm trying to figure out the guide train. I haven't decided on whether I'll spiral wrap it or not, but I'm considering both options for now. I've read through more than a few posts on the forum, but haven't read much on using the newer KR concept guides for spiral wrapping. Here are the options that I'm debating... Reel Setup -30 lb Daiwa

With the monotony of staying at home to practice social distancing and to change-up the typical topics on our site, allow me to offer what hopefully will be a little fun for all. WHAT ARE THE MOST STAND-OUT, PROFOUND ASPECTS OF RODBUILDING YOU HAVE ENCOUNTERED? “Aspect” is wide open, whether a material, method, technique, tool = whatever. For me; 1.) Spiral Wraps. I had never heard of, let alo

I'm looking for a 6'8" to 7'2" drop shot rod blank for pond fishing and possibly kayak fishing in the future. I built a ML Fast Rainshadow Immortal 6'8" thinking that it would have a similarly soft tip, but found it to be too stiff for drop shot. However, it's a great Ned Rig(1/10oz head), shaky head, or wacky rig rod, so I will be keeping it. I've searched around the foru

I know that painting a coat of rod finish over the whole rod blank will make the finished rod heavier and slower in action. Does putting a coat of paint, lacquer, or epoxy prevent the blank from absorbing water, or protect it from the sun, or protect it from breakage?

I have a couple guide questions. I have several Rods to build and considering all thats going on why not build them now but after looking at my on hand guides I would have to miss match them defeating my idea. I'd like to build them all as consistant ( same guides ) as possible. These are all casting rods for freshwater large mouth bass and since my ole eyes are not what they used to be, I leanin

I recently started a new casting rod build and I can't wrap my head around the guide spacing for this blank; Point Blank 731MXF 7'3" I've completely redone my other rods and none of them have the line touching the blank under load. I used the same amount of guides on all my rods that range from 7' to 7'2". (11+Tip Top) KW8 > KW6 > KW 5.5 > KB5 x3 > KT5 x5 > TipT

How do you sand the NFC blanks? Do you spin the rod on a lathe or sand it by hand? What grades of sandpaper do you use? Do you use wet or dry paper? Thanks for the help.

Good Morning Guys and Girls! I guess I'm going to start a food fight. Once again I've been struggling with my finishes. I was just so frustrated and just genuinely puzzled. Either my skills have diminished over the decades, which I'm sure they have, or things have really changed. Let me start by detailing how I performed my finishing routine for the first 3 decades I built custom rods. Up unti

I am new to the rod building obsession and have a question for those who are more experienced than me. Would it possible to use the regular ol' "dime store" glue stick to temporarily put the small guides in place until they can be wrapped or at least long enough to allow me to tape them down with masking tape? I will purchase some guide adhesive but will not be able to receive the adh

Guys, looking for some feedback…..Been talking to a cousin of mine who, like me, is a long time fisherman on the Tx Gulf coast. We throw lots of the same plugs, plastic tails, spoons, etc. for trout and slot reds. I’m building my own baitcasting rods now and what I’ve really settled on for my own use are rods built on several blanks, MHX CB843, the Immortal P70M and the Elliott AP7 M-F and AP7

I have been building rods and teaching rod building for a few years. When I get to guide placement I use the same process I think most of us do. Place the guides where we think they belong, then test to see if the "arc" looks right and adjust from there. I have been doing that for probably 30+ years of building. But in all those years I never knew (or really tried to find out) why I

I guess we can agree to disagree. Maybe my interpretation of “sensitivity” is not quite the same as Tom’s. I subscribe to Mike Naylor’s and Emory Harry’s positions on the subject in this thread this thread from 2007
