Hello Everybody. I need a little help: I have a bottle of GudeBrod "Speed Coat" "Rod Finish" Part #SC440. The label also say's "Stays Crystal Clear Even after Sunlight Exposure" and "NON-FLAMMABLE WATER BASE" Does anyone know just what this stuff is and what it is used for? I have two 1-1/4 FL.OZ. bottles, one still in a package with a brush.

Last year I bought some Flex Coat and it was crystal clear. Small bottles, used them up in a couple months. Just got ready for some new builds and ordered more Flex Coat. This time one of the bottles has material that is dark, sort of yellow brown. Has the company changed formulas? Hate to use a epoxy that is already yellow.

I haven't build a rod in awhile (3 years) and was just getting things setup for a build when I noticed my flex coat lite hardener has turned to an amber color? Has anyone ever noticed this and will it ultimately affect the color of my finish when mixed with the resin? Thanks, -Mike

I have used flex coat epoxy and seemed to be fine. Where I live we do not have anyone who carries rod building supplies, so I have to order everything. I am looking for an epoxy for gluing cork handles and reel seats that I can get locally. I tried some from the craft store and was not impressed, it is runny and takes a long time to cure. Hard not to get leaks somewhere. I have glued a couple han

Is there an issue with applying a water based urethane over a solvent based urethane? I have PermaGloss on a blank and will be sanding it level before I need to put a shiny finish coat back on. I am not using Perma Gloss again. It always come out lumpy. Thanks, Tony

I have some threadmaster that is going on 2 years old. It's pretty yellow (both parts) and some threadmaster lite that only the hardener yellowed. It seems like I remember somone saying you could microwave them or something and it helped restore clarity?? I mixed up a test batch of each and they clear up a little when mixed but they don't get clear as it should be. Can it be saved, or do

Hey all, I am getting ready to start a build on 2 rods after being out of it for awhile. I was wondering if the U-40 Rod Bond and LS Supreme light build that I had used almost 3 years ago would still be okay to use, or if they have a shelf life that would require them to be replaced. I can't seem to find any expiration date on the bottles. I know I have some LS Supreme that has never been o

It's been a while since I've built a fishing rod and I'm getting back into it. I have an unopened 2oz Flex Coat High Build kit that's a few years old. Is it OK to use it, or should I buy a new kit? The resin looks clear, and the hardener is a little yellowish.

I just got done stripping the guides off of 3 rods for a buddy of mine,I looked at the epoxy job they did and the epoxy is really thin, like they thinned out the epoxy before applying it,one rod was really hard to get the epoxy off even with a razor, looks like some kind of glue to me, just a thought, thanks.

I've had the same stick of tip glue for quite a while. It's getting some black to the edges of it. On my last few tips, I've noticed that it melted on fine, intalled fine, but later I could twist the tip with a moderate amount of torque? Bad glue or bad installation process? The way I do it is I hold a lighter to the glue until it is nearly dripping, then smear it all over the tip. Then

I thought I posted this question before, but I can't find in my posts. I apologize if I posed this question before, I just want to be sure. Will humidity bother the drying of the finish on my guides? I've always been afraid to apply guide finish in the hot summer months. Will air conditioning bother the finish?

Anyone tried the Gudebrod Ready to use Rod Finish? I just tried it on a 9' 7wt flyrod with REC guides, the guides just popped out of the wraps when test pressure applied. Three coats of finish applied.

Just a thought: I just got an email from Mud Hole about their new ProKote Medium Build Epoxy and it looks pretty good...I liked what I read about it. I think I'll give it a shot. Anyone else in here ever used it? If so, what did you think? Justin Goodwin

I started out using Flexcoat Rod bulders epoxy for gluing rings and attaching handles and seats. I then made a change to the U40 stuff that is about the consistency of vaseline. As a result I haven't used the Flexcoat for several months. I didn't think that it would matter because I thought the stuff had a ridiculously long shelf life. When I used it yesterday the clear one of the two parts had c

I can be a bit slow at times with my finishing and was wondering if I can "thin" it out a bit to help me out with this? A few drops of something that will not cloud the end product? Thanks for the help.

I built a few really nice fly rods around 5 years ago. I want to get back into it now. I need to do a small repair on a commercial rod that requires a guide to be rewrapped and finished. I tried using a small packet of unopened Cabelas guide finish (yellow/white packet) left over from the very first rod that I built, but it would not set up properly and remained tacky. I had to scrap off the

Does anyone have any experience with Classic Rod Coat (High Build) from B.D. Classic Enterprises? A friend has some left that is approximately 1.5 years old with Part B having turned to yellow where the directions state that the shelf life is approximately 1 year. Will call them tomorrow but was curious if anyone had any comments/experience with this product. Thanks in advance, Bill

I am having some trouble with my finish not hardening up all the way. I first started having trouble when I made a few small repairs and I mixed very little finish. In thinking that it was probably operator error (unequal amounts due to small quantity) I proceeded to mix a bigger batch than necessary (3cc each) to refinish a butt wrap. However, it has now been 24 hours and the finish is still not

I've seen posts stating the rodbuilding finish will last indefinitely but have never seen anything stating how long the expoxy 5 and 10 glues will last if stored correctly. Anybody have any idea? I'm thinking of buying the quart size but it will take me awhile to use it all. thanks

Good morning. I have finished a fly rod with single foot guides and 4 wrap tags. Everything looked really good after four coats of color prez. I brought the epoxy up to room temp, was careful to measure in a graduated vessel, mixed thoroughly and didn't overwork. Much to my disappointment the cured finish although it "feels" good is dull and it looks like it got contaminated. I was care

Hello all, i have just come home from my local tackle shop and bought some epoxy. Now when i have gone to epoxy my rod i opened the lid of the Part A (resin), it appears that the resin is in a crystalised form. I have a suspicion that the epoxy may have been sitting on the shelves for quite some time. A short while ago i had a similar issue with a partially crystalised resin, i thought it was oka

Do any of you know the shelf life of ROD BOND? My ROD BOND that I've only had for a couple of years now isn't as smooth out of the bottle as I originally got it. It doesn't have the "Petroleum Jelly" smooth consistency any more. It's more chunky now. It still blends well and I checked my handles and still holding strong. Should I be concerned? Thanks, TONY

When I was active in building rods I bought and tried a lot of thread coats etc. Well it has been about 3 to 4 years and I have a bunch of stuff still left some of which has crystallized. I recall that microwaving can refresh the resins but I don't recall the method well. My basement is below 60 right now so everything not crystallized is slow to pour. I noticed that most of the hardeners hav

Hi All I bought a dozen of epoxy and have stored them over a long period, the bottle and packing is already yellow and sticky all over. If I were to use these on my customers rod will it compensate the strength and finishing of the finish products, while I continue to use the recently order epoxy which are both clear in the packaging. Or it is better dispose it safety or making some pa

Hello all, i finished a surf rod about a month ago and i must say i'm a little unimpressed with my epoxy work. The finish has set perfectly, bubble free and it's very level, however around 3 days after the epoxy had cured it began to sweat. So curiously i began to examine the finish, it was perfectly hard but it had this surface residue, so i wiped away what i describe as sweat with a fine tissue

Is it just me or does this stuff kick off too quick. I am mixing 50/50 of A&B...I mixed 10cc of each first and spread it on aluminium foil like always, I only got through the first guide wrap before it started to kick off. I tried cutting the batch in half, 5cc of each, same results, one wrap done and that was it. I cut that in half and thinned it with MEK...This helped a bit but it still kic

Just wanted to report that I finished up two identical 7' popping rods. One was made with a cork butt and fore grip and the other with foam core carbon skinned butt and fore grips. I was very careful to turn and shape the two grip sets as nearly identical as I could get them. The set made from cork weighed in at 0.8 ounces and the foam core carbon skinned grip set weighed in at 0.5 ounces. I was

Last trip out, I had my reel seat slip and break the bond with the adhesive to the blank. i used some stuff that mudhole used to sell that set up like rock and had to give to it, which is why i think it failed. I have taken the seat, rear grip, and gimbal off and cleaned the blank. Now what are most of you using to adhere an aluminum seat to a fiberglass 40-60 pound class rod? I have some rod

Reading some threads about thinning epoxy, I noticed where some seem to like heat. 80 degree rooms, epoxy heated warm(?) in a microwave, etc. And on other threads I keep seeing that the use of aluminum foil will help draw off the heat to allow for more pot time. I'm thinking, some guys just work faster, or in smaller amounts as oposed to the foil guys drawing off heat. Or am I missing somethin
