Water Based Urethane on top of Solvent Based Urethane?

Is there an issue with applying a water based urethane over a solvent based urethane?

I have PermaGloss on a blank and will be sanding it level before I need to put a shiny finish coat back on. I am not using Perma Gloss again. It always come out lumpy.

Thanks,

Tony

It shouldn't cause any problem as the water is not going to undermine the dried PG.

If your PG is coming out "lumpy" you're either putting on too much, or applying it incorrectly. Or both.

Or the PermaGloss may be starting to catalyze. Is your PG like water in consistency, or is it more like a gel?

Somewhere in between, actually. That could explain it as well. I have had it for a long time and I have to pour through a gelled mass at the mouth of the bottle.

I just do not like the stuff! Too finicky, too temperamental and I never have good luck.

Thanks to all who replied.

Urethane varnish has a long shelf life--until it's opened. Then, unlike epoxy, it can go over the hill in a much shorter time. If you have gelling, even on the top, your problem is the age of the material not the kind of varnish. In addition, it's always a wise idea to filter any varnish, especially if opened previously, before using. Pore out what you will use, and never pore any left overs back into the original container--once the varnish has been exposed to air for a while it may continue to cure and "infect" the rest of the original container.

PermaGloss is a moisture curing urethane. The only way to keep it liquid is to keep air out of the bottle. Storing it in the metal can as outlined in a recent issue of RodMaker, and removing it from the bottom of the can, can keep it liquid for years and years.
