Hi, After my last problem with an oily residue appearing on the finish I made some changes and improved the result, but I still have issues. If anyone can make any suggestions I would be grateful. The first coat (as per my last post) was done with the air temperature quite cool. This time I put a heater on in the room. I noticed as I applied the epoxy there was a very noticeably oily sheen o

G'day, I have a bad habit of buying different types of epoxy to experiment with then getting sidetracked before being able to use it. I just found some epoxy that I purchased several years ago and never used. When I opened up the clear bottle I found it had crystallized - kind of like what honey does if you leave it for too long on the shelf. Should I give this stuff a fit and proper burial,

Hi all, I have a 2oz. bottle of part A / resin Flex Coat High Build rod finish, and it has started to get a solid chunk in the middle of the bottle. I tried to stick a tooth pick in it to see if it was rock solid and it isn't. I have kept the bottles inside the house since I got them and out of the sun, I have been using the color coded syringes that came with the and I don't beleive I have

I have two 16 oz. bottles of Flex-coat Lite with 2 or 3 oz. used from each.(1 each of resin & hardener) I've not used them since March. I've been using Perma-Gloss and LS Supreme. Is it still good? It looks unchanged, but how do I tell?

how long will this stuff last. I went home to my parents house a couple of weeks ago and they have been unloading things that I have left there, since I no longer live there, they claim. Any how last night I was going through some of this stuff and found a box full of my old rod building supplies, including some U-40 rod epoxy. how can a person tell if it is still good. This stuff has to be about

A few days ago in a response you posted, you said that applying an epoxy over a urathane finish is like covering your galvanized roof with a bed sheet. I know this gets bantered back and forth a lot,but could you please discuss for me the pros and cons of using permagloss as a thread finish as opposed to epoxy as a thread finish? Thank you, Alex

I was cleaning up and found almost full bottles of 2 part Gudebrod "Super High Coat", "One Coat" Rod Finish. It has a product no. of 843. It is likely 4 or 5 years old. Part B, (the resin?) is still liquid, but the Part A, (the epoxy?) is thick and paste like. I did use it to repair some guides, so they have been opened, and I do remember both parts were measured with

Has anyone used or seen a spine finder like the one Cabelas offers? The reason I ask that is I received a gift certificate for Cabelas for christmas & I'm just looking at things to use it on. Thanks, Tony P.S. here is the web address for the piner finder I was looking at.

The weakest link in my rod building is my never-ending epoxy challenges! Every time I apply epoxy I have to pray to the gods that it will cure and not end up sticky or have a dull finish! No matter how careful I am with my measuring, sometimes it's a hit or a miss? I carefully measure out 2.5cc of part A to 2.5cc of part B? What is going on????? I live in the Pacific NW and it rains a lot, s

Ralph asked me to move this back up where everyone could see it. .................... Author: Ralph O'Quinn (---.pstbbs.com) Date:   09-11-02 02:56 Hello to all I spent all day today trying to get to the bottom of this hardener darkening thing and am not very sure I got anywhere but here is what I found. First I checked all the on the shelf inventory at the plant, about 200 bottles or t

I remember reading the threads on this subject a week or so ago, and wondering what the fuss was about because I've used LS Supreme quite a bit. I use it mainly for its super clear properties. Well I just got in a new batch, and when I mix it it is a very dark amber in the plastic mixing cup. I've mixed up three batches and they are all the same. It stays the amber color even after setting.

I have an opportunity to obtain quite a large quantity of quality epoxy at no charge. Being a hobbyist, and a novice at that, his would be way more than I'm likely to use in year (or maybe even more). I live in a hot and dry climate (Phoenix, AZ). Are there any problems with keeping epoxy for such a time &/or any particular pointers that would help me keep the epoxy in a usable state? I w

I have been laid up for about a year with a broken back and just am getting back in the saddle. I had stored in my temp controlled room in my basement 3 finishes, Dura Gloss LS supreme, DG LS2000 and reg Flex Coat. The LS2000 is the only one that is useable after the year in storage and I think it was purchased long before the other two!The resin in the other two is chunky. Why? All were new in t

For the 'chemical savy' among us: I understand that the 'one part' or 'no mix' wrap finishes like PermaGloss require multiple coats to achieve the same 'coat' or result as the two part epoxies like LS Supreme or Flex Coat. That being a 'given', is one of these finishes 'superior' to the other AFTER proper application? If there is 'difference' in how it 'fishes', what are the pros and cons of

I am getting ready to put one of Robert Vennieri's reel seats on a fly rod and need to glue the threaded barrel to the insert. Any special surface prep necessary? Use Rod Bond? This is the first time I have used nickle silver hardware. The seat is stunning and I don't want to screw it up. Thanks Jim
