Haven't built any heavy duty tuna rods in awhile, but all the IGFA 50 thru 130- unlimited rods I built I inserted a fiber glass plug or bushing in the blank the length of the female ferrule. Never had any returned with breakage. Most had bent butts but were used in a fighting chair not a rod holder. I also used Marine Tex to attach the ferrule to the blank, never sanded the blank, just r

Great story I have been using Flex Coat since it became available, it's a great product, finishes like glass with few to no problems. I also use their Epoxy glues and Tip cement.

I believe Seeker has a blank or 2 for wire line, Art Nothing wrong with the slick butt, all of my wire line rods are used by boat fishermen, and the 2 piece rods are easier to store and transport to and from boats. The other advantage is that with a Unibutt you can get extra furrels any make a varieties of wire line rods. My Unibutts for bunker spoons rods also fits #30 IGFA wire

Having built many wire line rods for both Stainless and Monel wire. I have to say I never used Roller Tips, I prefer Carboloy or carbide tips and guides. Most of the wire rods I build are used in saltwater for trolling Bunker Spoons. I also prefer a 2 piece rod, usually a 6'6" blank with a #14 tip,Instead of using a smooth butt I use a Aftco, Pac Bay or American number #2 Unibutt. Gi

They appear to resemble Pac Bay Model CSBB Carbide Boat guides, Pac Bay only makes up to size #18, the rods I am repairing are Tsunami Trophy Series Wire trolling rods and are not a custom built rods.
Thanks for the come back !

Mildrum tungsten is the way to go if you can find them, a good substitute is Carboly, I have been using braced PAC BAY carboly from MUD HOLE Tackle , and have had no problems.

I would remove the old finish, with sand paper or bronze steel wool, I finish my wood handles with a good quality clear polyurethane, rather than spraying or using a brush I purchased a large plastic beaker and dip the handle and let them drip dry, I steel wool the handle, and dip again, if needed I repeat the process a third time. The handles look great, I cover the beaker with clear pl

Varmac also made quality reel seats, most of the high end salt water production rods in the 1970's had Varmac RS-2 and RS-3 reel seat, They were great reel seats and very durable.

Never had any issues with Flex-Coat C-P or epoxy finish, I store C-P up side down and shake well before applying to thread. Let dry for 24 hours and apply finish. Never had any fisheye problems. Sound like something is contaiminating the thread, not the C-P.

I believe you are correct, some Harnell rods had the Neo-Cork grips, maybe custom rod builders used Neo, and the Factory use white rubber ?

The last Harnell catalog I have is from 2002-2003, this catalog is from the Oregon based Harnell rod Company, as Mike stated above I believe these blanks never went into production. The 2002-2003 catalog has no reference to your blank # 1638R. I have rebuilt & repaired many Harnell rods, most have white rubber foregrips with the Harnell logo, and are wrapped in the red and yellow.

In 2005 I built a matching set of Seeker Long Range Stand-up tuna rods TS-60X H. The Customer has brought in the rods to be refurbished. I originally purchased the blanks from Summer Moon Tackle( a Merrick Tackle retailer). The blanks came with a 2"x2" Bluefin tuna iridescent decal with a black background with Seeker Rods text below the tuna. Since Merrick and Summer Moon are no longer

Used many Fuji gimbals on 50 lbs class trolling rods, never had any fail or break. also they don't scratch or leave marks on your boat's fiberglass finish.

I agree with Fred I heat the 1st coat of Epoxy with hot water, I also apply two(2) coats of finish, sometimes a 3rd coat is required, mostly of Saltwater rods

Tom is right on, my work shop is in a basement and only heated when I work there. The Flexcoat resin sometimes developes a milkey look or becomes solid, I put the resin bottle in hot water, and the resin is good to go, I never had any problems with the mixture remaining tacky. I try to keep the drying temp. about 65 degrees or better.
