I know guys use electrical tape for fix ps, and a few of my friends have extra ghetto rods with the guides held on with Tommy Tape. The Tommy Tape is that stuff which "melts" into itself - it's actually very stable adn holds the guides very, very well - as good as thread. No idea of how it holds up long term, but 2 seasons of fishing and the 2 guys' rods are still with the guides in pla

That's EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Anyone else have any of these colors, or even Sulky colors that they could match up for me? RT - I'm thinking of ordering a bunch of metallics, 500 yards is a lifetime supply, maybe you wanna split 20-250 or something this way we can both get more colors for less $$$. When we know waht colors are our favorites, we can just replace them ourselves. I'm ch

Click the link at the bottom of my post, all the info is in there. No Malt Liquor. I'm gonna have a hard enough time keeping the class organized. This is going to be a lot of fun, and one of the best parts...it's FREE.

This is the Metalic Sulky you guys use, correct? The problem with internet color charts - Jade Green on my computer looks Blue. Exactly why I'm asking for some help. THis might be a little closer?

Strictly color comaprisons between YLI/Fishhawk and Superior Metalic threads. If you happen to have either of these brands on hand and can match these up with another brand of meattlics, or if you knwo what regular Nylon color they match up with - that would suffice. Either one have a Purple metallic that matches Gudebrod Purple Nylon? YLI = Purple, Superior = N11 Violet. Ter is also Lavender

I just thought of a couple more things. After the Inlay is glued up & ready to be inlayed into teh grip, you have to leave yourself some room for error, but not too much. IF you are digging out the grip for the inlay to fit with an Exacto - the bottom of the dug out portion will be very uneven. This will be taken care of when you sand. Now, if you start with teh OD of teh grip close to where

Shawn - you can't mark the dots in a straight line - that's your own issue. If you start wrapping and notice teh patterns aren't straight - well then, you gotta wrap straighter! lol. IT happens to most if not ll of us - you mark everything straight, after a few passes, you notice it's a little off. PAck & straighten it out once some threads are laid down, and you'll be all set. I have some

Mike I'll post pictures for you. I just cut out the SpongeBob this afternoon, will be posting a few pictures of it prior to glueing. Rockin - What EXACTLY are you looking to do? How thick will the grip be. With thinner grips the Inlay needs to be between 2 - 2 1/2" wide because it will wrap around the grip too much. Thicker grips 2 1/2 - 3". It's ver difficult to get small details c

100 yard spool of thread only costs a couple of bucks. Just order a spool or 2 to start.

The tool is great to mark the points in a straight line on the blank. Yes there are other ways, for me this is about the easiest. Did you put it together yet? THe metal L thingy should slide up and down right over the notched Vee in teh base. THE rod sits in teh Vee, slide the metal thingy down - there's your straight line. Some people attach a ruler to teh wood so they can easily measure teh

Hank I understand your point, but to be honest I don't think 80% of the people who purchase fishing components (not just Rod Building stuff) go anywhere near a computer. So my guess is that those companies you mentioned would do just fine. Unless they are strictly making money off people who go on the internet, imo they wouldn't last if that's the case. That's not to say the internet hasn't h

Does that mean they are not snobbish and we can go back to supporting their products again? Read what Tom stated, 2 seperate companies. One who supposrts this site, the other who makes products which are sold by most companies which support this site.

I can't figure out how guys can keep the rod under their right arm, and crank with the right hand? Unless you're really strong (not me) - I need to use all teh strength of one arm to turn the handle, the strength of the other arm to hold the rod - no way I could do both with one arm. Regarding the Pilot - I've never fished with them, but they still sail daily. I fish a few docks down on the O

Cliff - I tuck it under my left arm, and I reel with my right hand. I got away from holding the conventional rod like a Spinning rod after catching a couple of nice Bass and had all sorts of trouble controlling the fish & turning the handle. The only reason I say the side the spiral goes to is the first rod I built made the guides go the "right" way (towards teh right) for no ot

IF you're building light fly weight, or light FW rod, I think you might be able to use Rod WRapping thread, possibly silk? THis is a guess on my part.

Depends what reel you're using. Non-levelwinds "have to" go opposite the handle so it's easier to lay line on the spool. Levelwinds, I haven't noticed a difference either way.

Madeira Metallics - the colors come in one size only, 4/2 or 5/2 I forget which. Same size as Gudebrod Nylon A. The Silver & Golds come in several sizes, 7/2, 5/2 & 4/2. I'm looking to sell all of my Madeira metallics because some of the colors I cannot use as an underwrap. I have used Superior & Fishhawk/YLI metallics, and will be re-stocking my supply with these 2 companies.

How do you clean them without ruining the rubber section which holds the bristles? I usually let my brush sit in that U40 Solvent stuff, and found out that when the handle of the brush is painted, it will come off the first few times in the Solvent.
