Paul, I forgot to mention that the 1502 will throw 6 oz's with your tackle box attached. I've test thrown 12 oz's and it seems like it could throw alot more.

Paul, I purchased and built two 1502 blanks from Mud Hole. I loved them so much I ordered a third......but it wasn't the same blank. The butt section was so short I couldn't use it for a surf rod. I called the folks down there and returned the blank in exchange for a Lamiglas 12 footer. The first two blanks were from Cascade Composites (closeout) and they have since sold out of these blanks. Tom, I sort of have the same problem. I really have enough rods for myself, but am really enjoying the building part. To keep myself busy building rods I've built two rods for my brothers (at cost) and also built one for my wife. I really don't see myself selling rods as a buisness so I offer them to friends and family "at cost".....there aren't many people going to turn down a custo

Mo, I also agree that building your own is the only way to go. You can customize it to your specific needs, and it's as much fun as building rods. I tried to post some pics of the one I built, but am still having issues posting pics.....here is a link where I did post some pics of the wrapper. The pics show it in the early stages and I've made some modifications since then. I also built the wrapp

I bought one about a year ago and am very happy with it. Considering how much it would cost to build a similar rod, I'd say you couldn't go wrong buying one.

Try the Rice metallic thread. I switched over from Gudebrod after my second rod and found it's alot nicer to work with.

Steve, it looks like a "plate type" reel seat, and I think they are wrapped on with thread. If electrical tape is holding it on, just remove the tape and wrap it with thread. Should tighten it right up.

Eric, I just finished two 12' conventional surf rods, and am on my third. The first one had 8 guides plus tip, the second had seven guides plus tip. Your estimate for six plus tip sounds right. You may want to consider going up on the guide size a tad. I started with a 25, then two 20's, two 16's, two 14's and a 14 tip. 10 seems awful small for a surf rod, especially if you're using a shock line

Rich, have you considered wrapping the tip of the blank with thread before putting on the tip top.

John, I just shipped a rod yesterday in a seven foot cardboard tube and it cost me $23.35 (UPS) . I don't think the weight matters until it reaches 30lbs.. My reciept said 0-30lbs. The big charge is for what they consider "oversize".

Russ, the trade-off for less guides might end up with the rod not being capable of handling a really big fish. Most of the off-the-shelf rods that I own could benefit from another guide or two. I've caught everything from small blues to 8ft. Hammerhead sharks in the surf, on the same rod. You have to decide if the few extra yards gained casting by using less guides is worth the trade-off. In my

I use Rod Bond to secure the butt cap to cork on my surf rods. Once it sets-up it would take a small explosion to break it free.

Russ, I agree with Michael, The thinking of fewer guides casts farther is old school. I've been surf fishing fow twenty-some years now and have had my share of rods. I just built a twelve foot casting rod with 8 guides plus tip top. It casts farther than anything I've ever thrown. I'm building the same blank for my brother in spinning trim, and plan on using seven guides plus tip. Once you ca

I was admiring some of the feather inlay's on the photo page when an idea hit me. I was wondering how it would look to create a fish using various feather combinations. Has anyone tried this? Is this too hard to do? I'm thinking of trying this on my next rod and any tips would be appreciated.

Samer, I think I'm bitten about the same as you. I just finished my second rod in three week's, and I've had a few tag ends pop through on me too. I can't remember where I saw this technique, but I started using it, and the tag end problem went away. When approaching the end of your wrap, insert the pull through loop earlier (I insert it about 15 turns before the wraps end) then when you get to

I'm on my second rod building adventure, and I ordered some black, and metallic black Rice thread in size D (for guide wraps over size A gold). WOW! I really like this stuff. My question is, do you guy's feel that this thread is better than Gudebrod, and why. I've been using gudebrod exclusively so far, but I think I'm going to switch. The Rice thread seems to be better quality, and easier to wr

Robert, I don't think it matters if your first guide is a single or double foot guide, as long as it's wrapped properly. As far as no guides on the butt goes, I have several surf rods, including two that I just built, and there are no guides on the butt section. That's just how it worked out the way the blank was cut (the tip about a third longer than the butt). I kind of like this setup myself..

Ted, your problem was defintely the confinement in the container. It's always best to mix quick setting epoxy on a flat surface. I cut up old cardboard boxes into squares just for this purpose, and I've never had epoxy "flash" using this method. Just in case, it's not a bad idea to have a small fire extinguisher on hand.

I sure can. I'm going to start out with 8 ozs. and then probably throw 12 ozs. or so. I currently have only 40 lbs. for a shock leader, so I might not be able to sling the 12 oz. as hard as I normally would. I'll keep you posted.

Phillip, see my post below (first rod is finished), the rod is a cascade 12'6" two piece (the closeout prices are hard to beat) that I purchased from Mud Hole Tackle. Although I'm new to building, I've been surf fishing for 26 years. I cut 6 inches off the tip of the rod to make it extra stout because I plan on throwing about the same amount of weight you're talking about. I plan on test ca
