I just finished a rod using this thread......strongest stuff I've had to cut so far. The razor blade didn't want to cut it when I finished the wraps. I used a nail clipper instead.

I had one pop out last year when I was trying to "tweak" the guide into a more vertical position. I must have bent it while taking it out of the rod holder. I used two pliers (with masking tape on the jaws) worked it back into position, then ran a thin bead of super glue around it. Seems to be holding so far....I've used the rod about a dozen times since.

Personally I like the garnet and "J" thread Government Gold. I think any combo of gold with the cork handle would look good. I've stained some wood handles and gold just seems to look good with natural colors to me. I like silver too, but don't like the way it looks with anything woodtone.

Lou, Call Jesse's shop....I just looked at a rod that Walt finished with the Redskin logo and matching colors....it's beautiful. I'm sure he'd be happy to share his color scheme with you.

I will get an update today from Walt. As of last Thursday he was in an induced coma to aid in the recovery process.

I was surfing around some of the sponsers sites and noticed that flexcoat now has a new formula with UV protection in it.

Billy, If some of the Pro's saw how much air I introduce into my Flex Coat they would have a heart attack.......I measure the finish into two plastic bathroom size (3 oz.) cups placed side by side (very technical) mix the crap out of it, dump it onto my trusty aluminum pie tin, let it spread out a bit, then laze it with my heat gun to burst as many bubbles as I can. I then brush it on whatever is

I'm very happy with the results i've gotten so far, so I guess I'll keep using alcohol. The store-bought (drug store) type can contain as much as 30% water, and I really think that can be a problem. Billy, I think your 91% might be a problem, not the fact that it's Alcohol. The type I use is 99.9% Isopropyl.

I've been wiping everything with alcohol between coats and I have yet to have a problem. Is this because of the type of alcohol? I only use Technical grade isopropyl alcohol that comes from a paint store. I'll also lightly pass the heat gun over the area I wiped to ensure it has totally evaporated before I apply the finish.

I stopped in Jesse's shop today to see how the show was, plus get some more free advice on a rebuild that I'm doing. A good friend of his was behind the counter (Walt) and told me the bad news. I still can't believe it, and I'm going to miss bugging him at the shop. Jesse's recovery is going to be slow and pretty painful from what Walt said, and we all need to keep him in our prayers. It coul

Allen, I just did a Google search for "removing silicone residue".....lots of interesting stuff there. There are a few spray cleaners (Slide brand degreaser for one) that don't have to be wiped, just spray and it evaporates away along with the residue. I don't know what effect the spray would have on thread, etc, guess you'll have to do a little experimenting.

Billy, I've only been building for a little over a year now, and I've come to realize that this whole epoxy thing is a mystery for sure. I'll use the same epoxy on the rod wraps (that turned out great), go to apply some on the wood handle and it fish eyes like crazy. The rod is still turning on the drier, I wipe the handle off with alcohol (which I also did the first time) mix up another batch

Keith, I've used gudebrod and Rice black metallic thread, and like them both. If I had to chose I'd probably pick the Rice thread...it just seems to come off the thread spool better.....of course I'm sure it's just me.

Allen, I measure 1/2 inch beyond the guide foot (after I prep them) for each size guide I'm using. I'll mark an index card with this measurement along with the center of the underwrap, and the starting point of the guide foot overwrap (1/4 inch inside the underwrap). I also write the guide info on the index card so I can refer to it in the future without going through the whole measurement proces

I agree with David.....just underwrap with white NCP. If you paint it , then do a nice butt wrap, then have some sort of problem with the paint after you apply the epoxy, you'll be starting all over again.

203. Re: Renzetti it is!
Yeah, I'm not too far from Charlotte (Virginia Beach) and thought about going last year, but work got in the way. May try again this year.

Chem lights with very small zip-ties work good for me. Recenlty tried the small battery operated light that works great....now if I can just remember to turn it off before I stick the rod back on top of the truck!!!

206. Renzetti it is!
I'd like to thank everyone for their responses about trying to find a Clemens lathe. I received lots of e-mails off the board that all told me the same place to look. The only trouble is they don't have all of the parts for a complete setup at this moment. I'm positive I'll like the Renzetti just fine. Thanks again!

I was told about the one listed on the buy/sell page (thanks Jesse) and am waiting on a reply to my e-mail. Does anyone have the forecast machine? I know it's not a renzetti, but it looks good for the money.

I like the renzetti, but like the rod supports on the Clemens a little better. I also think the bed extension is longer, which I'd like to have for building surf rods.

Robert, I don't see that deal on your website. What do you have to do to get that price?

I'm stepping up to a power rod wrapper, and can't seem to find a supplier of Clemen's rod lathes. I would consider a used (but in great shape) unit. Saw a couple on the buy/sell page, but no reply's yet. Thanks in advance.
