My personal option would be to underline a mudhole MHX 6 or 7wt. I have built so far a 5wt and and 8wt. The 5wt had an ERN of around 5.75 and AA of 72 and is the best distance 5wt rod I currently own. Very powerful, but I'm usually only carrying 65 or 75 feet of line. Any more and it seems to shut down a bit with the line im using (I can't remember what line it is, but it is NOT a distance line)

Wondering what others think. I think in the last couple of years in fly blank development we are finally getting to the point that ONE ROD really CAN do it all. With the advent of softer and softer tips (some may say faster) and the technological advances of mixing different materials down to the butt sections, I have found several rods that can cast as delicately as any slow action rods of the p

I'm relatively new to the game but I 'll chime in anywho. I have never noticed any difference at all reguarding the spline other than a good selling point for custom builders...;). I would rather have a straighter looking blank/rod than a splining (and a crooked rod) in which I can not feel a difference one way or the other. On top of that most of the bends or turns I see in rod blanks seem to

I have noticed that most of the builders and all mass produced fly rods step up to wire snake guides from single foot wire for heavy fresh water and salt. My experence so far tells me that an incredible amount of preasure may be applied to single foot guides before they want to pull out of the finish or even bend (even without locking wraps). Does anybody have any factual evidence that single fo

98. Re: CCS
I will bet money, that weather they say it or not, in the near future there will be a trend in the mass production market where rods (fly rods at least) will be falling closer and closer into the perameters of what a particular rod weight is or should be as defined by CCS. Just my opinion though. We'll see.

Looking for the best way to clean cork grips that are slightly dirtied from hand sweat and a bit of grime WITHOUT sanding. Anyone got any secrets?

Is a silk wrapped and epoxied guide any weaker than any other wrap? Would anyone be opposed to wrapping a 10-12wt salt flyrod with silk? I have never used silk and was just wondering.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I think theres some ethics involved here. If you can't make it exactly how it was you have to tell the customer what happened and then go from there....NO? I would be very upset if I found out my rod had been spliced together after I sent it in for a repair. I don't mean to sound like I'm perfect. But I wouldn't want a spliced blank or a rod that was shorter then when I

I installed a hand held on /off switch to an extension chord I plug into. Works great for stopping the dryer for short periods of time.

MHX 908-4 9'-0" 8wt 4pc ERN= 8.63 AA= 67 The rod was built with Amtack window reel seat w/ fighting but, and gold zirconia single foot fly guide set with #10 and #12 strippers by american tackle as well. A very straight forward simple build. Got anxious and forgot to weigh the blank before I built, but I will say that it was extremely light. It can't possibly be much off of what a

I'm very curious about this myself. Has anyone out there build on these blanks yet? Would less graphite be lighter (I'm not saying there is)? Maybe the scrim? Not sure.

Ive got an inqiry about cutting two musky rods, and converting them to travel rods. I'm very aprehensive about this. Is there a good way to do this without sacraficing the strength of the rods? Is there anyone in the chicago area that has done this before?

I resemble that remark !!! LOL. ; ) Quote ....."This is a custom build for my uncle and he wants a fly rod that he can use in his ponds on his property. He's primarily going to use it for bluegill/brim ..." I have plunked around in many a smallmouth river with a 5wt and a pocket full of clouser minnows just fine...... ; )

Eugene, That's a very good point you make. I believe you are right on the money. I think that might just be a conversation I will have with future potential customers. It makes alot of sense to at least point that out up front.

For dyf flies I would go with the "Finesse" or the "pro series". The others are a bit stiff.

As a small basically "NO" inventory builder, this is may force me to carry at least some inventory. I tout a perticular rod for its qualities (website phone sale), sell it on how I describe the action, order it, and and when I recieve it, it tests lower than what I had explained. Now I have two options. Either sent it back and order another (wich takes a long time . More than I or a cus

After testing quite a few blanks now it has come to my attention that the variance between one or more of the exact same blanks tested with the CCS system can be quite significant. I'm beginning to think it must be almost impossible to get all blanks of a specific manufacturer and size to spec out within a tight enough range as to print the ERN on the blank or model. Could this be a reason why ma

All very good blanks above!! I'm gonna add one more........I seem to be one of the only ones here that has a love affair with the PacBay Rainforest II blanks. I can cast them a mile, they load nicely, and have as fast or a faster tip than the others. Just my .02 cents though. I don't think they get due respect.
