I make most of my arbors from wood. I bought a machinist mini lathe from Harbor Freight and can do a lot of different things with it for rodbuilding and wood working or even metal work. Building mostly ultra lite rods the masking tape trick adds too much weight. Using more rigid material allows you too use less area to get the job done and save on weight. I build a lot of rods with hollow gra

You can cut a willow switch or bamboo shoot put some string on it and catch fish but some people like finer things in life. There is no shame in what you prefer and it is nothing more than class envy if you think someone shouldn't own the best they can afford.

Kent, there are more who think like you do but it is just not worth the argument to try and change minds. I was fortunate to have a Legend of rod building for a teacher many years ago who also was a friend of Don's. I was introduced to Don Morton many years ago at a Duck River gathering where he gave a seminar on spine. I was fascinated with his teachings and off hand I know of no other builde

Don't have an answer for that Ben, except to say that maybe taper is used to gain a weight advantage to the overall weight of the blank itself. I'm sure there are o

The taper of a rod can be measured without deflecting the blank. Action cannot be measured without deflecting the blank. The two descriptions are not the same in rodbuilding accepted jargon.

I try not to let the hoopla get to me. As i long as I end up with a rod that pushes my line accurately to the target and it's powerful enough to drag in my quarry I'm good. If it does that fast and has some soulful feeling in the process, then that's just a bonus for me.

I will go against the grain here and say build on the best quality blanks and other components you can afford, especially if you already have some experience. My thinking is why waste the money on something you don't need or intend to use. This is 2021 and there are so many resources like you tube, vendors, and this site that even a caveman can build a really good quality rod. I started with h

Trying to make rocket science out of something that isn't rocket science is the bane of some builders. All you need is common sense and common cents to get you through 99.9 per cent of your customers or self builds. Turning a fun craft into a difficult task would not be my idea of fun.

Go grab 6 or 8 regular anglers and do the same test and see if you get the same results. CCS system is the only way for now to get what you're looking for, numbers don't lie and there is no emotion or physical human attributes to change the CCS numbers.

So, if you should be charging by what you make at a 9 to 5 job, i should find a C-store worker at 10 bucks an hour versus a neurosurgeon at 500 bucks an hour with skills being equal in rod building to build me a rod? I think you should charge more by what your Market will bear but that's just me.

I fish for Crappie and Walleye and am an elitist as i only use artificial lures. I nor anyone i know and see on the lake use rod holders. Even the beginner kids fishing with minnows and bobbers are holding their rods. I'm a blithering idiot also cause i like my blanks to be soulful, lite, accurate, fast, powerful, smooth, and any other adjective that gets me excited.
