Let me know how that SJ 704 goes. Big hole in between the Xray SJ 736 and the SJ 732/703. I just bought the Xray SJ 725 but it is claimed to be more powerful than the SJ 736. Can anyone that has both confirm?

And I’ll second the X-ray SJ736.

I have too many that I like. The X-ray SJ 703 is a particularly nice blank. I think the web site has the ratings reversed between the sj703 and sj732.

Mark as you know : Michael Danek has suggested an affordable method to measure TNF. I had suggested an accelerometer in the past and they are now affordable. I had also suggested looking at studies done on materials for long canes The rod is a finished product so the handle material and shape should not be ignored. The degree to how any measured parameter translates to a finished product i

Alex, glad to see you feel differently after looking at from a new perspective. The following is a cut & paste from a previous post of mine. It contains a bit of extra info that you might find useful in making your purchasing decisions. "the expectation of what you get when dealing with a factory versus a wholesaler is another" I was going to suggest that but decided to st

Info from a different perspective. In the electronics industry it is common to employ grounding methods. In a hospital setting (think open heart where static electricity could be deadly, or flammable anesthetics where ignition would be catastrophic) mechanical manipulation of the relative humidity is the preferred method. We inject steam into the air conditioning duct work. Typically you

"Be assured every change of possession in the passage of a product from maker to consumer increases the price of that product." I take exception to the above. There are still some things that are hand made (assembled/fitted/etc.), from start to finish, by a single trained craftsman. Typically they are the best of the best, and as such, command a premium price. A man is more likely

FWIW I also have the BB 806-2. While it work work, I'd choose the MB. If 3/4 of an ounce is at the top of the range, and you want 7' and could stand closer to fast action, the SJ 725/ SJ 736 become viable options as well. If I could only have one I'd pick the SJ for casting lures and the BB for fishing lead and dead bait. The MB could cover both.

The MB 709 can be had in IM ($60.73) or HM ($82.84). I have the MB 7109 Xray (only because it was cheaper when I bought) and it is $85.00. Just a matter of if you think 10 inches longer would be a plus or minus. If you feel 3/4 ounce would be near the top of your lure range you might consider the MB 7108 instead. Hard to go wrong with any of them.

Lynn and David, maybe we should just agree that fish can be spooked by anglers and game can be spooked by hunters. I'd imagine a lot of superstition is involved. It is only natural to blame it on what "we think we did wrong" on a given day. Consider the following cut and paste. I could include another that shows some fish can discern one human's face from another. "Trevall

Good detective work Mark. From SR71 to CIA to Conolon to possibly CTS Kantner influenced a lot. I also liked the Miami connection. Dr. Glenn G. Havens is another name to look at and you will see how Shakespeare is rolled into all of this (it wasn't just Howald). In another thread I mentioned we used them way back in the day. IIRC Garcia got rights to the Conolon name in the early 60's. An

As long as we are being tongue in cheek here. David I would say it is because you are fishing for bass. Heck, show up for a bonefish trip in the wrong color clothes and we will leave you on the dock.

Mid 60's, born and raised in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area. Moved to Nashville in the late 70's for about 7 years. Other than that I have been in the Miami area. My Dad worked at a tackle store in the 50-60's as a reel tech and (I assume) rod builder. I grew up with rods and reels and probably started fishing when I was about 4 years old. By 6 or so I was helping Dad with rods and reels at

For 2# test I'd go with the 741. I suppose I should have said something like "it feels like a fly rod" more so than " it has a fiberglass feel to it". The 702 feels more like a spin-jig type blank. I wouldn't always go by their ratings. If you haven't yet, check out the blank compare app at RodHouse France. It is especially handy if you can compare with something you al

I have one but have not built it yet. Initial feelings are the ratings are fair. It is a true UL blank. Very much a "buggy whip" and on the slow side (which can be good for an UL blank). Almost has a fiberglass feel to it. FWIW I really like the FW 702-2. Very nice and crisp. A lot faster of an action but certainly not too fast. It is the one I'd recommend, if you can live w

Give me a little time to respond. I'll need a day or two. I'd ask that the word "soulful" not be allowed in this discussion. I'd like to see people include their (approximate) age. I think a <30 year old who has switched to FG is more telling than a >60 year old. I do respect peoples privacy and the idea that we may divulge information that could allow others to locate us.

Mark, sorry I forgot to mention Conolon. They were popular down here but more as a store bought rod than a blank. I always blamed Boeing for the west coast being the hot bed of everything to do with rod blanks. Way back in the distant past things were a little different. I'd say mostly because Miami was one of the few places (in USA) that where within reach of billfish grounds with the bo

My fishery was vastly different. Check youtube for "snook fishing Florida spillways" to get an idea (and to see why I questioned if your blank was up to the task). It was primarily land based fishing. Terrible access, swift water, and a ton of stuff to get cut off on. You really had to muscle/control the fish. The other main areas were around dock/bridge/pier pilings. A bit furthe

There were a lot of great rod blanks from the past. I find it interesting as to which ones were prized the most by time period and area of the country. For example, for me going back to the 60's, shakespeare and lamiglas were our go to blanks. Later on names like fenwick and sabre were the choice. St. Croix was always a top choice (Loomis was above our budget). Don't know why but we didn't

I can see the wisdom in the Lexa 400. Just felt it a little big/heavy for that blank. But you have the blank in hand and I don't. The common suggestion on a simple/bumper type acid wrap is to lay it out like a conventional setup, then flip all the guides, except the butt guide, to the bottom (180 degrees). Then add a bumper guide halfway between the butt guide and the next one up at 90 degr

I'm only seeing a 7.5 foot XXH from PB. Rated 17-30#. I'd go down to the 300 size Lexa/tranx/kimodo size. You aren't looking at long runs.

Tyler, I know what you are doing, what those reels are capable of, and what a big snook in heavy current is about. You should really consider acid wrapping the rod. You will use less (and smaller) guides and only a couple/few "need" to be double foot. The main advantage is the control you will gain over the fish when you are no longer having to expend energy keeping the reel uprigh

I always thought it was Pac Bay. Little more digging. Seems Seeker and Pac Bay bought tyhe mandrels when Sabre folded in late 80's early 90's. Penn apparently bought the name. Last I knew Seeker offered them under the same model numbers as the originals. Yup, good rods. Classic live bait with soft tip and strong butt. If your is the E270-7-HG Schneiders has the Pac Bay ones listed on

IMHO I don't think the companies that make the best inshore blanks are making the better offshore blanks. And if by "jigging rods", you mean vertical jigging, that becomes even more of a niche offering. I have a number of the NFC blanks so until Alex chimes in I will offer my two cents worth. The P702/703/704 are popping blanks for trout and redfish. Power tops out in the 8-15# ra

How would a wood lathe (midi?) do for this work? By the time you buy a wrapper and all the accessories it seems you could find a used (or budget) lather much cheaper.

Someone is bound to have something laying around. I know Rod Room has some but they are all one piece. So you have to buy in person or pay high shipping costs. Lamiglas just seems to have the right action and power for the striper surf fishing crowd. Century and Suzuki would be some others to consider.
