tip top paper clip an ponter are 37.5 grains alittle more tan 1 more cent--so ineed to add that to the 68 and get a value of 69.

So with 4 inches less the number comes down to 66 with an angle of 68.

Thanks
So if i get it then I should deflect 4 inches less when measuring? I will redo it and make some changes to the set up to get a better angle measurement--a little breezy out side.

Ok so I got set up--ladder and all sorts of stuff. It is rated a 7 wt. I got 77 cents but I have a question. Deflection is measured from the tip. Does it matter that the natural deflection is 4 inches with a tip top and pointer. I have to weigh the pointer I used and with the bags and clip I probably have one more cent for the number. The AA is 65 to 70. Is there something else I should do

IMO I would definitely pay more for a variable speed lathe and one with bed extension. The ability to slow down while sanding and finishing is enjoyable. While I never thought about turning more I have turned more pens than I ever turned handles. Woodturning has always fascinated me. I saw a Rikon last month at Woodcraft and I thought the indexing feature was really nice to have. It is always

How do you compute the ERN for 8 wt and higher fly blanks since the ERN is not linear (slope is not constant in table b part 1) with the number of cents loaded? Do you extrapolate from the 6.xx numbers because the delta ERN is .12 to .13 while the delta for ERN in the 4.xx is .15. Maybe it just is not that big of a difference at the higher ERNs.

What are you looking for in the AA on the spinning rods?
Forum: rodboard 14 years ago

How many of you actually compute an ERN for a blank before you build on it? Do you rely on data from the CCS data site for ERN values or do you actually do your own ERN? I am debating whether or not to set up some sort of a rig to do it.

What size guides do you use? Are the loops big? I really need to go see one up close and personal.

Yes I was sloppy. I meant "building on the straightest axis." I hate to be really dense and hard like ironwood but once the rod is in the "natural concave position" with the butt and tip high and the belly low do the guides get mounted on the concave or convex side?? When I finally get this we need a celebration.

I am referring to the "build on the axis" as it relates to the way it is used in Rodmaker and on the Guide CD page 20.

This is were I get confused. Lets say it is a fly or spin rod. I find the straightest horizontal line and the tip points up. So the guides would be placed on the opposite side of the tip pointing up or another way to say the side that the belly is on.

Thanks George
I like to keep things simple. I guess I would prefer to have an extra line on a spool since I can see myself all tangled up changing tips. I can envision buying the line but never changing anything.

I have always used a single wt fly line (floating). I see lines that have changeable heads or tips. How are these attached or changed. Does this area have an influence on the size of guides used so that all knots pass easily? Is a changeable tip something desirable? What are the advantages? Thanks

Am I correct that the term "building on an axis" means that is the line or side along which the guides are placed and wrapped?

Thanks--I will go give it a try. Of course now I realize that my widescreen laptop cut off the "next" button so I never got to all the pages--DUH!!!

Ok, I am trying to organize my stuff--LOL. I find I have a need for a couple of size 20 strippers to match the size 16 and lower that I have which I bought about 5 years ago. Netcraft is closed for the day and I recycled all the old catalogs being the green guy that I am. I could not locate the specific number on the website. The number of the strippers or two foot guide is 281341 that I ha

I looked at the little Wilton I got--model 99177. I think the bed might be a little longer than the turncrafter plus from PSI (Penn state industries pennstateind.com). I would start by looking at PSI and see if the chucks they have would suit your purpose. You want a good holding chuck IMO. If you like to be creative you could use a long 1 MT pen making mandrel close to 1/4 inch and use b

I think the small penturning 1MT type lathes will get you an 8 in grip. You need to keep the tailstock small and a small chuck on the headstock. With a little finagling you can easily turn seats as well.
Forum: rodboard 14 years ago
John Kepka
How long of a grip are you going to turn?. The working distance between centers diminishes quickly depending on your chuck and live center. Also the hole in the head stock is quite small compared to a 2 mt lathe so you are limited there if you want the mandrel to go through the headstock. Look at turncrafter plus from PSI as being similar. I got a Wilton from Amazon a couple of years ago very

It is refreshing to hear reports concerning some downside or limitations concerning the micro guides. It is nice to get a reality check.

Do you have any plans or way to have VOL 1 available? Vol 1 would complete my set.

Every once in a while the board gets a thread about shop lighting etc. so I figured guys who live near Woodcraft might be interested in this item. While I am not a fan of LED lights with the blueish tinge, I saw this little gooseneck 7 LED light at Woodcraft (29.95 strategically located at the register) when I went there to get some supplies. It comes with a magnetic base which can lift the en

I just quickly looked at the black large wire tip top on an 8 wt flyrod which has been heavily fished for over 4 years. Yes the black "plating" has been worn off but other than being shiney looks OK. I really did not look at the BLag running guides carefully but maybe I will give a close look this weekend and post if there is anything unusual.

120. Re: Mud Hole Lathe
I would suggest you get a variable speed model. I found changing speed to be annoying although many people do not find it to be a hassle. I bought the vs motor this year. I have had one for 4 years no problems with a switch--the on off switch gets the most use so it can be subject to wear and tear. I also have turncrafter plus vs and have used it extensively so far without problems (knock on wo
