I don't know if this is proper, but this is what I do. When I end up with the foamy bubbles using 811, I just let it dry. I then brush some denatured alcohol over the dry bubbles to dissolve them. I allow the area to dry and re-coat with CP. This also works for the silvery, scaley appearence when you apply too thick of a coat. I have not encountered any problems doing this YET.

Jay, I have all of my bass casting rods wrapped spiral (crank, jig, carolina, topwater & senko). The first rod I ever built (spiral), I gave to my partner, and he loves it. I rewrapped 2 rods for another bass man and he loves them too. I just took an order for a worm rod and he said "build it like you were gonna build it for yourself" He liked my spiral rods, so he's going to

Clyde, Thanks for the compliment. All but one of the rods I built for myself are split grip, both spinning and casting. I think I'm going to rebuild my 2 float rods and make them split grip too. I think it makes the rod stand out a bit. Many people have commented on them on the water. Doc, HE is paying for it.................parts only though. I'm trying to get some of my stuff out on t

I plan on building a demo device in the near future. He likes the 10-color lead core rod I built for him wrapped spiral. And he wants me to build some downrigger rods, wrapped spiral, so they stay upright in the rod holders. but for some reason unknown to me, he does not want this one done like that.

I'm building a steelhead/light salmon boat rod for a Niagara River charter captain, who just happens to be my best friend. I managed to talk him in to a split grip , cause he thinks they look cool, but he won't let me spiral the guides. The blank is a Forecast SH1025-2. In order to keep the line off the blank, i'm ending up with 11 guides + tip, and I feel that's too many. Guides selected a

I haven't seen or heard of such a blank either. If it does exist.....................I'll be one of the first in line for one. I've been wanting to build a 15'er, but 17' would work even better for me.

I saw a post by him on fisherie this morning. He is around, but relocating to England from what I hear. I've dealt alot with Rick before I started building my own rods (he's the one that infected me with the rodbuilding virus). He re-wrapped 3 of my casting rods and built me 2 float rods. He's a good guy and wouldn't hose you. There must be something else delaying him. What email addy do yo

I dip the decal for about 5 seconds. Then I let it sit on my bench, face down for about 1 min. The water that is on the backing from the initial dip is enough to release the decal.

Thanks for all the replies. I haven't used a lathe in many moons (8th grade). I got Andy's video last week, and it helped re-educate me quite a bit. I had my choices narrowed down to a Jet 1014 or 1014VS. It looks like the VS it will be. Also I have not been able to locate the 4 jaw chuck that was used in Andy's DVD. Could someone point me in the right direction? hope to make it to the sho

I am going to purchase a lathe in the very near future. I would like some opinions on the advantages of having a variable speed lathe over a 5 or 6 speed lathe (other than having to moving the belt on the pullys to change speed). Any responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott

I have had this happen a few times when I applied too much 811. I found that if I brush some alcohol over the dried white spots, they dissolve.

on the matt blank, I tried almost everything except acetone and lacquer thinner. Even scotch brite (I was desperate??) I ended up just leaving it on the rod. I think it added character. And it definately says "I wasn't bought at WalMart!" On a green one I'm currently building, it appeared to be under the green coating, but was back far enough it was covered by the rear part of the

I have 2 green SCV (1 casting and 1 spinning) rods that turn cloudy wherever drops of water settle on them. They always clear up in a few hours of being dry. I've always wondered why they do that too.

Mike, I was going to contact St Croix about this, but then figured I'd do it myself. Now I can set it up to properly match the reel. I'm slowly starting to rewrap all of my factory rods. Scott

While we're on the subject of St. Croix.......The epoxy was cracking on ALL of the guides and the hook keeper on my (less than 1 year old) manufactured Avid dropshot rod, so I decided to strip them off to rewrap. I was surprised.....shocked....dissapointed to see that NONE of the guide feet were prepped. Is this normal, or did I just get one that was made on Friday or Monday??

3M 4200 marine adhesive sounds like it might work too. It's a slow cure urethane adhesive. It comes in small and large tubes, like caulking, and has about the same consistency. I haven't used it on rods, but it worked well on wood , fiberglass and plastic in my boat.
