211. Re: Talon Rods
I have a 13' Talon ITM (and REALLY like it). They also make 15' and 17' in a different series (not listed on the website). Email Dwight and he'll be able to help you.

I gave the arbors a thought myself, however weight didn't seem to be a problem to him. He already has a rod with 12" cocobolo grips. I'm gonna try to talk him in to using blue burl and trimming the ends with the dymondwood. I'm kinda afraid of him smacking it off a rock in freezing temps and shattering it, or having the rod shear at the foregrip cause it's too rigid.

214. Wood grip question.
I have been commissioned to build a steelhead rod on a 2C106MLMF2 blank. The customer wants a 12"-14" rear grip and an 8" foregrip made from Dymondwood. Add in the reel seat and I'm looking at 24"-26" of very rigid material. Am I going to be creating a shear point at the end of the foregrip using a material this rigid? Should I wait to get the blank (rod) to see how f

215. Re: epoxy on guides
I "floss" with thread scraps to remove the excess epoxy from in front of the guide......Usually after about 1 hour.

Take a look at Talon . They make a 15' and a 17' 3-piece. They offer over 600 models so not everything is on their website. email them (Dwight) for a list of available models.

I have a friend that broke 6 rods this year, all on fish, and all the exact same distance from the butt to the break. That spot happens to be the exact distance from the console of his boat to where the rod intersects the gunnell when he lays the rod on the deck. Couple that with 60mph across choppy water and EVERY rod he ever puts there will eventually explode. I recommended putting some foam

I've done sunburst w/copper met. (to match a Sol reel), cobalt w/gold met., charcoal w/gold met, dark blue w/dark blue met. dark blue w/gunmetal blue met., purple w/pearl met (wife's rod). The two nicest ones were the cobalt w/gold and the dark blue w/gunmetal blue.

Paul,
Yep...It's a float rod. I think the small ones are Baston VS. They match the Match guides pretty close.
Robert,
Those are the ones! I thought they might be Match guides, but that color is not in my Baston catalog.
Thanks much.......You guys are GREAT!

I had finished almost an hour of "babysitting" a Rainshadow ISB822.5 and set it to turning on the drier. Checked back at about 1:50 into the cure to find a gnat in the epoxy over my decal.
I removed the gnat, which left a void in the finish over the decal. I had nothing to loose at this point, so I decided to experiment. The excess epoxy was still gel-like on my glass plate . I d

For the jigging, maybe a 4SW76MF (Inshore Saltwater). I'm building one as a deep water Erie tube rod.

224. FET Question
If I were to gather up the components required to build a rod, package them together and sell it as a rod kit, would I have to pay the 10% FET on it? All I am doing is reselling components, right?
Thanks,
Scott

I like that weather strip idea Putter. I just stick my finger in a plastic bag and spread it around.

Chris,
I have had them rust too. Contact them and they will replace. The original ones were made from spring steel (the fabricator thought they would be better). the new ones are "supposed" to be stainless. I'm waiting on my new supply of them now. They are replacing the rusty ones and all the othes I had in stock. I still have some of the old ones tied up, but as long as they

Are you using braided line? I have a few rods, both factory and custom, that are very LOUD when used with braid.

229. Re: PG on SCV blank?
I didn't use alcohol at all on this rod, just dry paper towels. Had to be real careful where I placed the RodBond. I plan(ned) on using PG as a thread wrap. I was afraid of it melting the finish and coming back thru the threads. Maybe I'll just use a light coat of Threadmaster.
Thanks,
Scott

230. PG on SCV blank?
Has anyone had experience using PG on a SCV (brown) blank? With PG being as hot as it is and the SCV finish being as fragile as it is, I was concerned that it may soften, blister, remove the finish on the blank. I'd do a test myself, but the handle is on, the rod is wrapped and I just don't have an extra one laying around to try it on.
Thanks,
Scott

231. Re: Talon rods
Here's an email response i got from Talon when I asked about some long float blanks and how to get them:
We do offer a 15' and a 17' blank. These are 3 piece. Our web site only
lists our most popular actions and since we build to order and offer over
600 models we limit what we list. Yes you may buy direct and we do offer
wholesale pricing with the proper documentation (usually copy of b

I have a float rod built on a 13' ITM blank. It's the lightest 13' blank I've ever felt. I'm going to look in to some of their other blanks.

I was in contact with one particular wholesaler last year. Since I didn't have a storefront, they didn't want to do business with me. Most of my customers want reels with their rods, and I was trying to offer that. Now they get their reels on-line and bring them to me to build a rod around.

237. Re: Rough night
I used to dip my 811 bottle in hot water til I found this one on the clearance rack at Cabelas. I couldn't believe it was so thin. It would go on like...................warm CP.
Come to think of it, I have been wondering why there are some spots on my shirts that aren't fading. I never put it together til now. I guess my bench will retain it's color when I dribble epoxy on it now too!

I checked out the wraps at lunch. I actually like them. There's a little contrast when the sun hits the blank/wrap, but the wrap blends in when it's out of the direct light.

239. Re: Rough night
I rarely use winding checks anymore. I try to be real careful when reaming the grips to get a nice fit and I wrap right up to the cork. Sometimes I'll add a 3-turn trim band where the check would normally go. In instances when I'm not careful enough, I have an ample supply of winding checks to bail me out.

240. Rough night
All I needed to do was tack down some trim bands with CP. I got the first couple done and all was fine...then I bumped the bottle of CP.... spilling it all over my bench. Normally I wouldn't be too torn up about this, but it was THE bottle of 811, The Holy Grail of 811 that had the viscosity of water. HAD the viscosity of water................now it's a baseball-sized puddle of goo on my bench
