My son and I have gotten into land based shark fishing. I have been seeing some unique rod builds being used by several people and I need some help figuring out what they are doing. They are using 2 piece rods around 8 to 9 feet long that break down right in front of the handle. It looks like they have a threaded reel seat and the rod threads onto it? Some have 2 different rod set ups that us

92. Re: Mudhole
We never had any problems with the last 2 mail carriers. I guess a PO box is an option, I'm glad not everybody is experiencing the same things I am, there is hope !!
Didn't mean to make this about me, lots of good points made in this thread related to the original post.

93. Re: Mudhole
The level of service I get out of my local post office and the mail carrier is terrible. Mailbox door open, wet mail, flags up, flags down, mail on the ground and on the street and just wrong address all together. Several times I have had packages thrown onto my driveway when nobody is home, and sometimes when we are home. I have tried to remedy the situation with the manager and nothing gets

Without going into to too much detail, I just want to recognize both Mudhole and American Tackle for excellent customer service. I placed an order with Mudhole and did not receive the guides I ordered. Communication with them revealed that the guide I needed had been discontinued, and my issue was handled. I called American Tackle and discussed my needs and they helped me find what I needed.

95. colored epoxy
Back several years ago when rodbuilding was taught to me, I built my 1st rod with a homemade foamcore rear grip. Once we shaped the grip, we coated it with epoxy and we mixed paint into the epoxy to make it black. Another time I repaired a broken spinning rod for myself and instead of painting the out sleeve to match the silver blank and putting epoxy over it, , I mixed paint into the epoxy and

O K, I get it now. And all of the comments are good examples to keep in mind. I recently struggled with a repair because the original wraps had discolored so bad that I couldn't match it at all. Looks like I had more resources than I realized, I never thought about using a Sharpe.
Good information, Thanks for the input.

I read this statement in a thread about rod repair costs and I don't understand what it means Can somebody explain this to me?
"Next learn how to pull three different colors out of every spool of nylon thread you use"
Thank you,
Steve

Recently I took in 2 different Duckett Rods for repair and I called them inquiring about the guides I needed. The very nice lady told me that they would supply the rod owner with the new guides if asked, and then she asked me about my repair business. She asked if she could add me to their list of confirmed builders and repair stations, and she told me she would send me the guides I needed. We

I will admit, the wraps that were not fraying looked clean and crisp.

101. epoxy overlap
When the generous man showed me how to build rods, wrap guides, he taught me to run the epoxy past the threads onto the blank to seal it. I have always done this and never had any problems. I took in a custom rod this week to replace a broken tip top. The owner was very proud of the rod (he didn't build it of course) in that it was light weight and very sensitive. I noticed that the epoxy on

I am in Tyrone, Ga. Build some rods for customers but mostly for myself and friends. I do repairs for anybody. I'm pretty busy, I work midnite shift and got a lot of things going on all the time (3D archery tournaments across the U.S.A., kayak fishing, full time job, full time dad, husband, you get my drift). Would do a group thing if I can pull it off.

Excellent guys, looks like this dumb question may help some others too. This is what I needed, no more struggling to clean everything off.
Thanks to all,

That extra epoxy beyond the wrap is the problem. I have no issues getting rid of the old thread, but I struggled removing ALL the old epoxy. I'll try this next round and I'm sure this is what I needed.
Thanks again,
Steve

I am going with the old saying. "there are no dumb questions" so here goes. When replacing broken guides on bass fishing rods, how do you remove all the epoxy from the area without making the repair area longer? No matter how careful I am, the area always gets a little longer. So once I epoxy the wrap and cover my "cleaned up area", the repair is longer than the existing wr

I sent Garcia a very nice email asking for identification of this guide, and if they would sell me one. They said they do not sell repair parts, and the guide was a size 10, T-MMLB. I have no clue what this is, but I am ceretain it has a #5 ring. Anybody?

A customer brought me an ABU Garcia Veritas casting rod with micro guides for repair. I need a double foot #5 guide (2nd guide from the reel) and I can't figure out the brand of guide or anybody that sells anything like it. I bought a guide from Mudhole but the frame is wrong. Can anybody tell me what brand these guides are and where I can get them?
Thank you,

Thanks to all of you, lots of good info here. The customer has bought into the underspin idea so I am good to go there. The rod I am building is for a 3 yr old grandson and the customer said "he's toting a 6 footer now!" he said the grandson comes over every day and has either a float or a rubber worm in his pocket.
Thanks again,
Steve

I am building a couple rods for kids and 1 of them is a 3 yr old. They want a casting rod for him so he can use a zebco reel. I can't find any small casting seats, does anybody make such a thing?
Thanks,

Keith, I'm a little late weighing in but early on in my rodbuilding career I had a lot of problems with my epoxy not drying. I had been using syringes the whole time but my problem was that I did not mix it long enough before using. It was recommended to me to mix the epoxy for at least 2 minutes, and I mix longer for larger quantities. I have not had any problems since using this advice.

Try using an aluminum arrow for your mandrel. If all your doing is shaping foam, you don't have to spin it that fast. The arrow has an insert on 1 end that has a center cut into it, chuck up on the other end. Right now you can pick up an arrow on clearance at walmart for about 4 bucks. Carbon arrows are stronger, they probly go for around 6 bucks. Put the carbon arrow inside the aluminum and

I am building an e glass cranking rod with micro guides and I need a size 8 tip top. The biggest I found are 6.5, are you guys still splitting the tubes so they fit the larger blanks? Or, have you come up with another way?
Thanks,
Steve

Somehow the reel seat is cracked, and it has a foregirp.
The butt of the blank is larger that where the seat goes and he wants and exposed blank seat.
Also, I don't like using tape under the reel seats front and back. I don't mind building up the front under the threads a little but not the whole seat.
Thanks guys, alot of good ideas if not for this job, maybe another down the road

Thanks Bill, that was what I read. Did you use a sleeve under the seat or do you use the seat as the sleeve? Sounds like you are just using the reel seat.
Thanks again,

I guess I read a thread here about replacing a broken reel seat without taking all the guides off the rod. 2 methods mentioned were to either remove the rear grip and replace the seat that way or to cut the blank in 2 and install a new seat over top of the ferrel / sleeve repair. Am I crazy or did I read that here? I know I can come up with some crazy ideas once in a while but I'm not taking c
