I am going with the old saying. "there are no dumb questions" so here goes. When replacing broken guides on bass fishing rods, how do you remove all the epoxy from the area without making the repair area longer? No matter how careful I am, the area always gets a little longer. So once I epoxy the wrap and cover my "cleaned up area", the repair is longer than the existing wraps. How do you guys clean up the old epoxy while maintaining the orignal repair area?
Thank you Re: replacing broken guide help

Steve,
The simple answer, is to NOT clean up all of the old epoxy. Rather, peel off the old thread by cutting the thread and finish on the guide foot - so that you do not cut into the rod blank. Then, slightly heat the finish to soften it a bit and then just peel the old finish and thread off of the area. Put the new guide in place and rewrap the guide, putting the thread in the same place as it was before. Don't try to remove all of the old finish - just put the new thread back where the old thread was located. Be safe Re: replacing broken guide help

That extra epoxy beyond the wrap is the problem. I have no issues getting rid of the old thread, but I struggled removing ALL the old epoxy. I'll try this next round and I'm sure this is what I needed.
Thanks again, Steve Re: replacing broken guide help

When you get one thread and warm up the area Pulling the remainder of thread off And you will have the finish at the ends of the wrap I leave this on It tells one where to start and end the wrap You never see it once new finish is on Bill - willierods.com Re: replacing broken guide help

You can heat the epoxy and peel it off or safer way is to shave the epoxy on the top of the foot going forward towards the foot and peel the epoxy off once the epoxy is trimmed off the top of the foot. Glenn McMurrian Re: replacing broken guide help

Excellent guys, looks like this dumb question may help some others too. This is what I needed, no more struggling to clean everything off.
