I am also a fridge guy like Bill. Pour out what I need into a shot glass. Beware of using a plastic cup/container to pour it into as Permagloss will eat up certain plastic and you will end up with a mess. Bob Crook La Pine, Oregon

Andy, You might check out Golden Witch They used to be a sponsor here but see that they are no longer on the list? If you plan on making one from scratch it is a long, long process. You might be better off getting a blank and starting from there. If you get a blank get one that is already ferruled, IMHO, cutting the ferrule stations is the hardest task. Good luck. Once you get sta

Gil, I don't think blanks are available, but I could be wrong. I suggest that you contact Tim Rajeff Sports in Vancouver, WA , the US distributor for Echo, and I am sure they can tell you. Bob Crook La Pine, Oregon

Buzz I appy 1 coat of Minwax oil base stain, let that dry overnight and then 1 coat of Satin Minwax Spar Urethane. Let that dry overnight and then buff with #0000 super fine steel wool. The final texture does not seem to differ much from that of the cork without any finish and it doesn't rub off or stain the hand. I use this method on all the fly rods I build and have never had a problem

Here is a photo of 4 colors of Minwax stain that I tried a couple of years ago, I think the dark stains are just to dark, but that is just my opinion.

Eric makes a good point. If the guides and reel are on top of the rod when casting and retreaving the line would contact the rod, with the guides and reel in the bottom/down position the line during casting and retreaving contacts only the guide rings. I have seen many first time fly casters pick up a fly rod and try to cast with the reel on top and it didn't work very well Bob Crook La P

Sounds to me like the spacing of that one guide may be off by a little bit. Did you test cast the rod before you wrapped and finished the guide?

Steve, Spar varnish has been used for many, many years to finish both the entire rod and wraps on bamboo rods. It along with spar urethane has special oils in it that help the finish expand and contract. Using spar urethane for guide wraps on graphite fly rods and as a blank and guide wrap finish for bamboo I have never had any evidence of cracking or spalling. Spar urethane also contains

I have been using Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane on all the rods I build, both graphite and bamboo for about 2 years now and find it produces great results with 4 to 6 coats on guide wraps. It is easy to apply and requires no measuring or mixing.

You might consider Delta Ceramcoat acrylic artists paint. I have used it with a pen to write on blanks and then coated it with Permagloss and it works, no adverse reactions, but have never tried it on a whole rod blank. If it were me I think that if I wanted a pink blank I would get one from Andy at Lamar.

You can also us spar varnish applied with your fingers as is done with bamboo. I use Helmsman Spar urethane and it works well for guide wraps also but takes 4-6 coats.

As a last resort you can always glue the chuck onto the shaft with Rod-Bond. I used Rod-Bond to glue one on and it has been holding for 2+ plus years and a lot of rods. Bob La Pine, OR

Another great issue arrived today. The cover photo Antti's birch bark handle along with the how to article was awesome. Also the article by Jim Ellis, "The Art of Decaling", answers all the question that many have about the application of decals. For those of you that visit this site that do not subscribe you should not waste any time in subscribing. It is by far the best magazine

You might try Rod Bond, I bet it would work. I have patched holes in my waders, both breathable and neoprene and it has worked great, also broken china cups and all all kind of Honey Do projects around the house. Never know till you try it. Bob

Kieth, Should look nice when finished. I guess orange is orange, was thinking of attaching a picture of a Beaver, orange, sweatshirt to your email? Have not tried Threadmaster yet so can't be of any help there but from what I have seen poated here it is great stuff. Post a picture of the rod when it is finished. Bob

Your thumb nail is the perfect tool for removeing thread and finish after you have made the cut on top of the guide foot, so let them grow, also works good for packing the new wrap.
