Tony, Here is the spacing I used on my FT 9' 4pc 5wt. 4-1/8, 9- 1/8, 14-3/4, 20-3/4, 26-1/4(ferrule), 36-1/8, 45-1/2, 53-1/4(ferrule, 66, 80(ferrule0, none on butt section. Started out with a guide at each ferrule and then static test and test casting. Performs great. Fished it a lot last summer and it brought a lot of nice rainbow and browns to hand. Hope this helps. Are you saying the tip-top does not line up with the other guides? If that is the case that could be the problem?? I have switched to using only single foot ceramic guides on all the fly rods (graphite) that I buld except for bamboo rods and plan on putting single foot ceramics on a few bamboo I am rebuilding in the near future,

I would agree that here is a problem with the guide spacing, put the reel on the rod with the line you plan to use and do a Static Guide test as per the library above, , and adjust the guides as required and do a few test casts and see if it iimproves. If the spacing you used is way off changing the guides from snakes, which have been around for a long time, to another type will not make much

Ken, You might check out the Birchwood Casey black for aluminum/brass bluing, , I have used this on older fire arms and depending on the metal it is used on it has more of a gray/black , (gunsmoke?) color than the regular bluing. Just an idea? Bob Aluminum Black® Metal Finish The room temperature chemical used by gunsmiths and industry to blacken aluminum parts. Restores scrat

Look around the house/shop/barn for things that need fixed if you have a little Rod Bond left. I have always found things such loose draw handles, broken dishes, loose handles, etc to fix, even had to mix up a liitle more at times to take care of everything. There was a post some time back about fixing a coffee pot. By the way I have even found Rod Bond to be dishwasher safe.

I just finished re-finishing 5 bamboo rods, 2 with Tru-oil and 3 with Helmsman Spar Urethane, not thinned, both applied using my fingers. The Spar looked good after 2 coats and it took about 5 coats of the Tru-oil to get the same look. Polished both in between coats with oooo super fine steel wool. I have refinished lot's of gunstocks with Tru-oil only and never had any problem with any fad

Don't use any tread finish over Tru-Oil, it is not made for handles or grips, it is for thread. If you want a finish over Tru-Oil get some spar urethane at your local hardware store and use that.

Tom is right, the only thing that I do different is use a round tooth pick instead of a needle.

I would contact Bob Meiser, R.B. Meiser on the left. I think he has a 3 piece 10' 11/12 3 piece and might be able to help you out with a 10'6'' Bob

Here is a couple links to thoughts on this topic awhile back. I use a Dremel with a diamond disc. Remember to use eye protection when grinding guides!!!

Have not tried it with a torch but did a couple using a wood burning tool. Used the round shaft that comes out of the handle and rubbed it up and down the cork to get a nice chocolate brown color. When finished with Tru-Oil gunstock finish seems to hold up very well. Got the idea from burning feather patterns on cork duck decoys years ago. It takes awile so have settled on using stain instead

If you can't find anyone who sells it in Toronto you could contact Birchwood Casey and they could probably tell you who sells Tru-Oil Gunstock Finish in Canada. You also might be able to order it direct from them. Below is the web site.

Check out Bob Meiser's site. He is a sponsor on this board and a expert on double/single handed rods and casting. He is also a very nice person. He helped me a lot by answering a lot of my questions when I was building a 10 ft switch rod a year ago.

I use Elmer's Carpenter's Exterior Wood Filler. Color is pretty close to that of cork. Put it on with a craft stick or your finger and sand it down after it has dried.

Don't mix the stain and sealer. Stain the grip to get the color you want, let the stain dry and then put the sealer on.

Just clean the inside of the female ferrule with a small piece of super fine,0000, steel wool follwed by using a Q-tip dipped in lacquer thinner to remove any residue.

Kieth, The peach would probably be a pretty close match to the Beavers colors. Mark B. fish with a Beaver rod... never!!!!!!. Aaron, link to Sulky site:

The closest to orange that I have seen is Sulky #7042 Rainbow Prism Peach. The on-line color charts don't show really show the colors that well so you would have to see it in person to see if it is what you want.

Bruce, I burn feather outlines on wooden decoys and use artists transfer paper to trace the pattern on the wood before using a fine point on the wood burning tool. Guess it would work with a signature also. The only problem might be getting a small enough signature on the curved surface of an insert. I have a couple scrap inserts and will give it a try and let you know how it turns out.

Sulky Original Metallic comes in 3 shades of gold, 7003 light gold, 7007 gold, 7004 dark gold and 7005 brass. If you have a thread store nearby take a look. I like the brass as it is not as bright and shiny as the golds. Bob

I think he meant "blush". It is a very soft round brush that women use to apply cosmetics.
