May I suggest you contact Tandy Corporation on line. They are the company for leather. I would get the leather thin and a water proof stain in brown. Then finish with a sealer for leather. They can be flat or gloss. Advantages are many but its if done right an easy job to replace worn leather.

I believe in buying American where ever possible. More important then what I believe my customers want "made in the usa". That said I also need a to sell the best product for what my customer needs. If no American made productfits the nitch then I will fill the bill with outside products. I do know many customers that will gladly pay extra for us made.

I was saddened to hear of the death of a friend and mentor. I read his books as I learned to build and moved to Marco Island Florida. Well low and behold Dale was my neighbor and I knocked on his door one day to introduce myself. He invited me in and he and Donna became close friends. Always one to see new techniques and further the craft he loved to see my latest build. A true pioneer of our cra

I am building a rod to donate to a VA patient with ptsd. He is a true American hero and I am honored to have guided him fishing where he gets away from the hospital. I want to put the first cav. logo on a rod I am building for him. Anyone have any ideas where I can find a decal? I don't have the time to devote to designing and executing a weave. Perhaps during my slow time next winter. Just thoug

Hey Russ you certainly can fish for goliath I have been on tv 3 times fishing for them. Charlie Moore, And Trev Goudie twice. You cannot remove them from the water and must return them unharmed.

I take a shot at this I was a guide and shop owner in SW florida for 12 years. Most of the Goliath are in or near shore. Near pilings and bridges with current. This is meat stick fishing as you get them to bite a giant lady fish and keep it slack until you start the boat get rid of the anchor then while your buddy backs away from the piling you set the hook and pull a 150 pound giant away from th

As many of you well know my first job is as a chef. I have learned over the years that if a customer in the restaurant wants ketchup on his $30 filet we put ketchup on his $30 filet. Now to the rodmaking business. I have a customer who buys a rod every year from me as a christmas present to himself. He has for 6 or so years now. We are friends but i would call it a professional relationship. I am

That is a great tutoral and a good technique. John there are other ways to accomplish the same thing and like most things in life there is always a different way of doing things. As too a easier way I don't know just different. Guess it all depends on what your used too. Billy

Ahh yes as Tom said STEVE Gardener (So So Sorry For The Name Mystake Steve Was In A Hurry) wraps them with thread. I just built one for a customer using Steve Gardeners offset graphite handle and he just LOVES IT!!! When I sold the customer on it I just couldn't convince him to do the reel wrap. I tried and tried but I know next time he will trust me and I guarntee he will be back as he really l

talk to fred Gardener. He just taught me how to do the one he had on the cover and in a recent article. He advocates the tape method if i am not mistaken. Any way his offset method is second to none.

76. Baffin
I built two rods for customers using Andy's new "baffin" burl cork. One I inlayed a one eighth inch dark burl between every ring the other I inlay'd a checkerboard. Both came out great. The new baffin is a bit lighter in color and for lack of better explaination less "chunks". I mean its smoother i texture then his other burls. I love the way it looks after sanding thru 4,000

Has anyone tried to get natural cork lately? Not only is it very expensive obviosly but a lot of venders don't even have the cg1's and 2's. Anglers workshop has some good stuff. I bought some from mudhole they said was there best stuff and if it was there best I would hate to see there worst! I like Mike have gone too Andy's Burl and have very good luck with most customers. As far as wood goes mo

Quick and easy once you get the nack of it too. It's been a godsend for me as I can whip out the butt wrap on a order for a custom rod with the renzetti. If I am doing a cross wrap I really don't use the power. It takes twice as long as the holo.

I would use sic for starters as he is using braid line. Myself I use single foot fly guides for all the top guides and either two or one foot for the rest. The next suggestion is to buy about 9 or 10 guides. You should only need eight plus the tip on that rod and only use three sizes but you will have to have extra sizes till you see what the rod wants to do. Read the rm article recently on new g

The tlnsg is a solid titanium "concept" guide. The tynsg or tunsg one or the other is the matching bridge guide Kyle mentioned. As he said thats the perfect strip guide for that set up. I just bought a small stock of them to keep on hand and just love them. They are light as a feather cast a fly line like it's not there and are as rust and corosion proof as it gets without getting into

Rays suggestion is spot on. Keep in mind though you may have to buy (depending on what u have in shop) two of the same blank or one fiberglass one graphite of similar taper. It is unnerving cutting a perfectly good blank but be confident.good luck!

I saw it at the show last year and grabbed a brochure and couldnt wait to get home and order up some. Then I saw the price of the matagi stuff and changed my mind fast. Great looking stuff but the price is ourragious and it would not stand up to our salt air here in the everglades. billy

Being in S.W. florida I don't build many salmon rods. I have a regular customer who is going out to Washington state salmon fishing in the rivers. He wants me to build him a travel spinning rod for salmon. Now I have built rods for the salmon river in upstate Ny but they were for a relatively small river. I need some suggestions for blanks and set up for this. Keep in mind it's a travel rod. Bill
