Tom they make a casting guide. For sure you should look at them. Super light weight and tough as heck. Also the black recoil is a bonus for sun and heat retention. It is bonus to have a guide that will not corrode in ANY environment and is able to bend to any shape and return to it's original shape. Great to use in ice conditions. Also almost entirely all I use for fly rods these days. Mostly sin

no problem dave. They really work well for ice rods and for my steelhead guys. I lived in Alaska for a few years and guiding winter was my time to fish. I learned a lot about iceing lol

Tom, The ceramics being black will tend to hold some solar heat which will tend to keep them some what warm enough to melt some of the ice. My winter fishing customers by far though prefer recoil guides. The tend to bend slightly which flicks the ice off. If you don't get that lucky its a matter of a quick bend of the guide and your back to work. I have tried minimas myself in the winter and

Lou you just described my shop to a tea. After 30 years in the business I think I could open a new blank business with the stock I have. Same thing with the various epoxy's and glue. I too have a half dozen or so go to blanks I prefer. As to all the other blanks I bought over the years on a whim or believing the hype. Many I wouldn't even donate as they will break it any way. Funny many times whe

Be-little folks so they are afraid to ask a question only makes them afraid to ask a question. If you don't want to answer don't say a word. Some people it seems there "reward" is not giving but making themselves the self imposed expert by answering as many different questions as they can. many times with wrong advice. Some in a round about way trying to sell something they make or res

Well I will go the other way and say that if someone asks a question a lot of times the reply is "look it up its been discussed here", or similar response. Now if you don't want to help leave it alone. Don't make a newbie feel stupid just for asking a question. We were all newbies at one time and some are better with the net then others or perhaps new to the sight. Also many times the a

phil start straight and you will end straight. I use the ambient light to draw a horizontal line in pencil down the blank. As Sandy said use a drafting template for the two ends of the diameter. Just two markings easy easy it gets much more diffacult for me doing a 6 and 8 axcess design. I use the mathematical equation from Dale Clemons book to mark the verticles adjusting for the taper. Then the

That article from Gary is great. It is really nothing I didn't know just a great way of explaining it. That article will become a sales tool for me in the shop. Especially the part about a rod for everyone. I don't always think that way pointing people toward what I would use instead of what the guy can "handle".

Cp for me all the way. It gets even more important with more detailed cross wraps as it keeps them in place when applying finish and assures no bubble problems. I do mostly use high build though as I like the one and done aspect. By that time im usually "over" that rod.

Take a look at the directions for a display rod Tom did one year for the magazine. to me it is the best rod display I have ever seen. Its mirrored lighted and spins. Its like a jewel showcase for a rod. I have said I was going to build one since I saw it at the show and never have.Perhaps someone could tell us what issue it was in so we could all reminisce.

Marc its hard to explain what I am talking about in the cutting method but it works really well and gives a very smooth and professional look to the locking wraps. No bulky look at all. Perhaps some of the other guys can explain it better then me. I know when doing multiple weave layors you almost have to do my method or end up with a big thick mess. There are other tricks such as the popsicle st

Per Dale Clemons book years ago I wrap my end wraps working out from both ends of the wrap. I use a lot of tight pressure to start. after 5 to 10 revolutions I begin to cut away the ends of the wraps at an angle cutting away from the wrap. I alternate cutting and wrapping and eventually get down to bare blank. It helps to coat the cross with color preserver first and let it sit a day. This makes

Well said Tom!! I don't need the customer who feels like he got good customer service because he got one over on me. And I certainly don't need all of his friends coming in as well for the same reason. I also am on board as I give out an instruction manual with every rod I build. Some guys laugh at the statement but all the time they say when they read it "ha I never knew that". I also

I give a year that's it! I used to give a lifetime but had a few bad people like you. Even the year if it is obvious to be a neglect break I will not repair for free. Now I will repair any rod I built and at a discount. This is not only discussed in full but written and signed by both them and me. Every once in awhile it will cost a sale with a fence leaner but for the most part its been a blessi

Ed I have lived in south florida and Soldotna Alaska. In both places I have used the carbon skin on a fly rod. Never had any issues with stability. It gets really stable once its on the rod if applied right. Now there is different weights of foam and each one is more dense then the next. It is weight of one square foot. IE 8# foam is 8 pounds per square foot. That all depends on what your fishing

One of the reasons they decided to get the helios 2 blank out there is they are doing away with the superfine touch glass blank all together as of this year. They needed a replacement to keep there blank line selling so this was the obvious candidate.

Ya, guys around here are willing to pay $800 on a good fly rod. Swamp guys save there money for a good jambala, boudon, or gumbo. lol Yes it has a lot of power in the butt and can throw long hauls. Blanks I got came direct from Manchester Vermont. Help that I am paying the sales reps mortgage for the year. He has been there rep for 28 years so he has a in. I still prefer the mid flex forgiveness

Its been a top seller here in my pre made rods for a year now. It pains me to say but it stands up to my custom rods pretty good. The blank is a dream in the mid flex version and the guides (recoil) are great. I have been building on there blanks for a year thanks to my orvis rep for my personal rods and swear by them. Its tops for me by far!

The purpose of the locking wrap is to prevent a single foot guide from slipping out from under the wrap. This is not possible with a double foot guide as it is wrapped in apposing directions. It would also not be easy to do as getting the line under the body of the guide would be really a pain. Just wrap as normal and done.

The 27X and new guide concept are great tools among the many your company offer us. As far as K series guides go they work great and my customers who tried them love therm.
