I mount the block on a mandrel and cut with a fine tooth hacksaw while spinning at 1200-1500 RPM, smooth every time.

The blank is already at the desired length @ 5'3" and going in a #2 short unibutt which will put the overall rod at 6'6"

no problem for trim, but you should hit it with a coat of CP before epoxy

38. Unibutt question
Guys, I'm building a couple 50lb rods for a client that wanted me to match existing rods he has, He supplied the #2 Aftco Unibutts for the build, and i'm using Lami LGC-LRT50-W blanks. Here's my question The #2 ferule inside dia. is .875, the butt on my rods are .899, can I turn down these rod butts a little to get them to fit the ferule without hurting the integrity of the blank so it will fit t

Bill, single foot guides that look like fly guides, but i haven't found a match. These guides are leaning well forward, i can get something close but was hoping to locate the actual thing. I usually stick with Fuji replacements on all my repair work when I can because I've never had one come back. I don't like to spend a lot of research time on oddball guides but feel i owe it to the client to r

don't have photo at the moment, if you look up the rod online there are pretty good pics. Shimano lists these guides as "low profile aluminum oxide"
Thanks,

The only ones I've ever gotten from Lami are peel and stick.

Guys, trying to find guides for a repair. Have recently been getting in a few of these rods and am not familiar with a supplier that carries the guides that match. The rods are Shimano Sojourn, the guides are single foot, larger than micro, have more of an angle than fly guides. Any idea who carries these?
Thanks,

A little heat will usually do the trick for me, and then goo gone for any sticky residue.

I've had that problem in the past, but was my fault both times. Once had my mix wrong (too much part A) second time had added testors paint without pouring off the clear stuff first. I definately wouldn't add more hardener to try to make the cure better. mix epoxy as usual and then add a small amount of pigment (a little will go a long way) it will cure just fine.

I build a lot for the pier and surf crowd, and i see this kind of thing all the time. Customer equates longer rod with more distance, which in some cases is very true say 10' heaver vs 12' heaver for example. I spend a lot of time on piers and do my share of pin rigging, The pros that I see out there are using 12-13'6" max and that's where the average man is going to fing his best distance w

I build a lot of surf rods, and I'll have to say just looking at your numbers look pretty good. You must take into considerationthe reel you're using and you're abilities with it. I've seen a lot of guys spend huge bucks on high end customs that can't throw 60 yards, and then some old guy with an off the shelf tica of similar length and action throw 130 yards.
I think your setup is OK ,I'd loo

The way I find lost things is to stop looking for them, I alwys find what I lost by giving up the search and moving on. Another way I find lost items is to ask my wife to look for them, she always asks the same question... where did you see it last?? Nothing can be hidden from her, on purpose or otherwise :)

I thought maybe I was the only one that may have come across a bad spool so I didn't say anything, just figured I wouldn't purchase anymore. I've got a 4oz spool of black D and have maybe used 20 yards of it and so far have encountered 6 knots (splices) really frustrating :(.
Glad you brought it up Owen, hopefully the mfgr can make improvements to prevent the problem in the future.

56. Guide Search
Looking for guides that resemble the Berkley SS304BC BBDF carried by Janns Netcraft. These are double foot, black frame, chrome ring, and I need a size 25. Janns appears to only carry up to a 12. The rod is a Shimano Saguaro.
Thanks for any help,

Curious to know who makes the chuck and jaw set Billy is using in the photo at the top of page 18? I've got a Nova G3 on my Jet but can'y seem to find a set of pin jaws to grip a 2" square.
Thanks,

I second that, I purchased the Flex Coat slip chuck about 5 years ago and use it every day for my epoxy work.

Michael,
Most of the guys on this board have been in your shoes when we started. The best advice I can give you regarding flawless epoxy is to do a first coat that is applied very thin, (just enough to wet the thread thoroughly) not enough to sag and drip; after that dries then add your flood coat. Epoxy just isn't that difficult but it does take a little learning curve to see what works best
