32. Re: Rod Polish
Astroshield, its an airplane polish and glaze. It has no wax so there is no film. It also covers minor scrathes and cleans the rod.

Same here, warm water. I have used alchohol in the past and not had problems but switched to just plain water as there was no need to spend the money to clean a rod before wrapping.

I wouldnt try to balance it with the reel seat. The MLF is great for jigging walleyes but I agree with Tom, an LF would have worked better in your case. Good Luck.

I agree with Tom, the Flex Coat wrapper is a perfect fit for the beginner. Flex Coat also offers a small book titled "Step by Step Rod Building" along with a CD titled "Flex Coat Rod Building "How We Do It"". Both are inexpensive and well worth while for someone just starting. The CD really simplifies the beginning craft and also shows methods of wrapping without a r

Id build an entire new one, charge him half price and use the old broken one to experiment with which reapiars might work best, then fix the old rod and you have a new blank.

41. Re: Guide tilt
The tilt would be something recommended to the customer or dictated by the customer. Its possible that the customer wants them tilted at an angle and some straight up and down. Just use Toms advice when explaining it to the customer. Thats why its call a custom rod.

Great article, thanks for the information. I didnt realize that CP was the secret. Learn something new everyday. Now I can work on perfecting it and start teaching it in my classes.

Which side to place the guides on the spine is a debatable point, some do it the way Mike said others do the opposite as Tom said. When I teach I teach that on spinning and fly rods the guides go on the bottom and casting go on the top spine. Alot can be left to interpratation and builder preference. I think its a point that could be debated forever.

I agree with Mike, I clean my reels annually and I cant imagine trying to clean it when it is glued to the handle. Also think tying it on with thread as you would a guide is also a good idea, that way you would only need to re tie after cleaning.

Removing guides and relocating them shouild not leave any marking on the rod after cleaning the area with alchohol. As long as they are removed carefully and correctly.

Billy,
I like the way you run your classes, very simiilar to the way I run larger adult classes, however, individual classes are different as pointed out in Bob's post you run a danger of competition or continued questions that can be found in information poiinted out in the class that I run.
Iam not new to teaching by any means, I simply wondered what others thought of pricing and its intere

I must say I agree with alot of you willing to teach for free to someone who wants to learn. In re thinking I would probably do the same unless that person intended to go into business for himself. Thank you for the feed back, it gave me something to think about. By the way, I charge civic organizations nothing at all, the sponsoring agency usually charges a nomnal fee. I dont charge for any thin

Just curious as to how much other instructors charge their clients for instruction. I normally charge retail prices for all components including blank and then anywhere from $50.00 to $100.00 flat fee depending on what type rod it is and whether they want to include a butt wrap or not. Overall I fairly flexible. Once they have picked their components I adjust my pricing as to not out price myself

I recently sent a builder copies of my teaching materials (student and instructor manuals) along with a number of tranceparancies. I dont remember who it was as I send material out all the time. If you do have the tranceparancies please email me to arrange for there return. They take a good amount of time to make as well as a good amount of money. I use them for building seminars and need them as

Would the same apply to freshwater rods, suggesting that you place the guide on the blank and not the marbled part?

Your right on with the fact that its what its all about. The looks on the kkids faces from my classes when they catch their first fish on their own crafted rod is unbeleivable. It makes them almost as proud as it makes me to watch them. I have a 4 yr old grand daughter who I built a rod for and this summer will be the first time she gets to go fishing so I cant wait to see her reaction when she h
