123. Re: Rod Blanks
I agree with Robert and Tom, first, now that you have built your first rod, you have an excuse to build one for every situation, however, you might have trouble convincing the wife, but its well woth it considering the multitude of blanks that are somewhat fish specific.
As far as Rober, I agree a 7' MH fast tip is great for bass cant speak to a Castaway.
When I build for my grand kid, I us

Id go for the smaller ID until it fits, shimming might effect the purpose of an exposed seat.

I started using the glue method exclusivly. I heat the guide feet and swipe rapidly over the glue and transfer immediatly to the blank. I then hold it it position until the glue drys. Usually have to take your fingers off very carefully or you could rip the guide right back off. Works for me.

I use one of those water color mixing bowls the kids use in elementary schools. Just lay the quarter in and fill with regular rod coat let them dry for at leart two days, pop them out and trim as needed. It works great jjust need epoxy them on after triming.

At one point I had considered opening a "co-op" offering different builders a rack of thier own charging them 25% for each sale with the builder being responsible for keeping their own rack supplied. I would also have a small shop set up for my own building. I would also sell building components and limited amount of fishing tackle. Never did set it up though so their is one idea.

135. Re: Scratch repair ,
Rub the scratch with Astro Shield or any other non alchohol based polish. Cover scratch with matching permanant marker and re apply polish. Then use rod restorer over entire area. I have done this and it worked unless on more than 1 inch schrates.

I have not done that, however, I have retrofitted the old pac bay chuck to fit in to the new chuks that are smaller than some butt grips making it posible to take the larger butt corks.

139. Fly Reel Set Up
I have built 7 or 8 fly rods and finally built myself and the kids each one. So, when setting up the reel:
Line backing,
Fly line
Tippet
Leader
Is that correct? and if so what doesnt make sense to me is you have a tapered tippet and then tie on a 3 ft sedtion of regular mono for a leader??? I know you have to match the fly line and tippet to the rod as far as weight is concerned

I have made numerous shrink tuble covered grips but dont know if it is strong enough to repair the grip

Just a little trick I just figured out. For folks wanting inlaid coins for butt caps I bought a cirucular water paint mix pallete in the craft dept. (Works best on the Gold Dollars) but quartes look pretty good as well. I havent tried nickels and dimes yet. Anyway, pour a little rod coat in one of the mixing bubbles, drop your coin in and straighten it out with a toothpick then pour more coat on

I make a parallel cut on top of the guide foot all the way down to the foot itself, then you can pretty much peel off the old coating and thread at the same time. For the left over glue I use an alcohol lamp little bit of emery cloth. make sure you dont go beyond where the old guide feet are or inside where the feet were as to not scratch the rod, unless of course you are able to cover the scrat

Ok, got the photos fixed, three in the misc catagory.
It appears that a thin layer of cork covers what appears to be a plastic handle, but as I said, this is his fav rod and dont want to mess it up.
Thanks,

I have a TD-X 6101MHFB-CLI Linear Interline (6'10" M/H) to repair. I need to replace the butt grip, however, after screwing off the butt cap it looks like a plastic liner with threads for the cover but also a female threaded tube inside the grip. (I posted photo in Misc. Photos)
Does anyone know if the plastic liner on the inside of the grip goes all the way through the intire grip? Custo

149. Hook Keepers
Just a reminder when fitting your customer for a rod. Make sure you include the placement of the hook keeper. If not properly placed it may interfere with their retrive. So make sure you check their hand placement for retrival.
Only a reminder because I forgot this on my last customer and now have to relocate.
