181. Re: Handle?
I used a 9inch tennesse with an ice rod clamp down seat. If you have never seen the clamp down type reel seat, let me know and I can send a pic.

I have yet to experience any trouble with the brown pearlized finish, however did have some problems with the blue matte on the SC IV. I expressed my concerns to St Croix and was assured they were aware of the problem and were working on new mixtures. I recently toured the ST Croix factory and was extremely impressed with their quality control process as well as their engineering porcess. There

I usually do an underwrap a little beyone the entire length of the clamp, coat that with one coat of Classic then wrap the two ends of the clamp with contrasting color, looks pretty nice and sets a color theme for the rod. Never tried putting a sleeve of any kind, but would think that would work. Havve used clamp seat on wood handles and I dont have to worry about cutting in, etc plus dont need

My vote for beginners is from Doc, he has two sizes and they are easy to use. Jim and Doc are extremely helpful when it comes to weaving. Doc's jigs are available from One of the sponsors to the left, @#$%&.com. Oh yeah, dont forget to fork over a few bucks more and Doc's DVD's, they will pay for them selves.Good Luck

I use alot of these for Ice Rods and they seem to be a hit with the customers. I wrap the ends with thread and put 2 coats of rod coat on them. I use the thread color that will be used throuoght the rod. Personally, I love them. I have an Ultra Light with this plate and its simple to handle and handles well.

I have a sample of CG1 through CG3 that I show the customer and let them make the decision and explain the price difference.

Thanks, Richard. I was hoping to avoid that but it seems to be the best idea right now. I would tell him he needs to start over but hes only 16 so I got to give him a break....lol

I have a couple old ones, one an 18, the other an 8rpm. The 8 is way to slow for applying coat but dries very even. The 18 is much better, however its an old one with a pvc chuck with set screws for centering (which I hate) it is hard to get it set up just right and needs consistent attention. I cut the cord on this one and installed a foot pedal which for me is a must when applying coating.

191. Grove in cork grip
One of my students was packing a wrap on a clamp down reel seat that attatches to the grip. As he was putting pressure and turning the rod he pushed down to hard and made a shallow groove in the cork. Any ideas on how to close the groove up? I tried pushing from both sides, didnt work. I also tryed covering it with 1/4" tape and doing the end wrap over the tape.
Problem is on the end wrap

Use rubber bands over the rod stands. Or, I just got a tip from an old pro who uses those short bungee cords. Get the nylon ones and you can shorten them. Again, place them over the rod stands and snug over the rod blank.

Gudebrod is the only CP I use and I have experienced the "milky" color and texture but all disapears after coating. At least it has for me. Do not shake it before applying! I have also found that if you try to "dab" it on to get into the corners of diamond wraps it will also create bubbles wich tend to leave the milky marks more than just spinning the rod and useing light coa

I agree, it makes the rod look cheap and poorly done. Anyone think it causes any performance problems? Wrapping each guide up the ramp on each foot seems like it may be a stronger wrap.

Just wondering what folks thought about wrapping double footed guides. Does anyone make it a continuous wrap or does everyone wrap both feet separate.
Does it really matter, or is it just an asthetic thing. I wrap all separate except the hookkeeper which i just use a continuous wrap.
Just wondering

I once had a problem with beading and found out that I had inadvertently grabbed a rag prerviously used for polishing rods when they were done. I was simply dusting off any particles and such from the rod prior to coating it. The rag left just enough of the polish residue to cause beading when i coated it. Wiped the whole thing down in alcohol and things were fine.

200. Rod Building Club
Im wanting to form a Rod Builder Club just NorthEast of the Metro Area in St Paul, MPLS Minnesota.
We are looking to get at least 8-10 builders to meet once a month on a rotating plan moving from one shop to the next. The luncheons would be free provided by the host, or take up a collection and go out.
Right now,, there are 3 of us with a serious interest, more would be greatt. Its not an

Bingo, I didnt know if I could do that or not, I mean wrap a guide on a ferrule itself. . (Sometimes I need a good slap in the head with a 2x6 to get my attention)
Thanks, Tom

Tom, first, thank you very much for the response. I know my description is confusing. Let me try again.
1. I usually call the first two ceramic guides closest to the butt strippiing guides, so that is confusing. But it is the first guide closest to the grip.
2. I had to install a ferrule (chrome) as the rod was broken in half and both ends were shredded and shortened the rod by about 4 in

I have a customer who brought me a 9' custom rod built by his brother who passed away. it is a Loomis blank way past any warranty period. It broke where the first stripping guide closest to the butt grip was. This was exactly where I had to install the ferrule. I wrapped the female ferrule half way up to match the male end length.
Problem: the next stripping guide is 40" from the butt wr
