7861. Re: "Steelhead" Rods
Here in the Pacific Northwest the rods are heavier than in the Midwest because our bigger, heavier waters dictate them. Rarely do you see a noodle, or fly blank used unless you're side drifting from a boat or a multi-piece travel rod is necessary. The blanks start at 7 ft 6 in, ML, ex Fast blanks for plug fishing and go up to 13 ft as mentioned above. However, both extremes are pretty technique s

Looks like I mis-spoke after seeing your picture, which looks like your rings are more tapered both ends and have a trim band. The ones I've used had a knurled spot on both sides where you would slip them up, or down and were more blunt on the offside from the reel foot.

Custom Tackle has what your looking for I believe. I think they are in the Tennessee handle kit section, listed as a 1 inch slip ring which is somewhere around 25 mm.

I think you'll be fine, you should notice less scratches on a matte blank. A blank doesn't need finish to protect it, it's just cosmetics.

7865. Re: All Star Blanks
I think that may be the B908CF-IM10 blank, Andy Snedden had 3 of them according to the inventory sheet he sent me. A Fast, Ex Heavy Power blank. He would probably know for sure, or where to get the info. Rodbuilder Supplies to the left.

7866. Re: Wooden Pistol Grips
Pac Bay used to make some stabilized wood trigger reelseats. A lot of custom steelhead rods here in the Pacific Northwest have them. Wiebe or someone also made a wood insert for the Wiebe skeleton reelseat out of very similar material. The Lamiglas IM700 factory salmon/steelhead rods had them. When you can find them they go for about $25 a piece.

Jim,
I guess I think a lot like Tony, when I saw your post the two blanks that came to my mind were the older SCIV St Croix and the All Star Austin blanks. The IMX blanks are a little lighter in weight than the Austins I think, but the All Star blanks have a very good durability, blank straightness, appearance & performance history.

7868. Re: Crankbait rod
Mike,
The Seeker FS-706-S, S Glass, is a very popular blank among tournament fisherman. Bingham Ent. and Anglers Workshop both have them on special for about the same prices. The standard FS Seeker blanks are E Glass, so they are a special order and are normally about $10 dollars more. Another S Glass is the Lamiglas SSP 845, they are very similar in action, but the Lamiglas is more expensive. I

7870. Re: New store location
Emory,
Haven't been in that area of Idaho since the late 80's, but I think it's on the Nez Pierce Reservation, on the Clearwater River, north central Idaho.

Lou,
There probably should be some panfish action on Sauvie Island you'd think, as we have had a bunch of clear wx with temps trying to get in the high 60's. The good trout fishing is inland quite a ways, to far for a 4 hour fishing window. There is a panfish club in the area, but I don't know if they have a website with info.

Dave Henney at Dave's Custom Rods might be able to help. He knows something about Fisher products. Should be able to Google him no problem.

There are a lot of great glass blanks out there. I use more Lamiglas blanks because the factory is 30 minutes away, I've used their products for many years with great success, and customers ask for and are very comfortable with them in the Pacific NW.
That said, Seeker, St Croix, Forecast, and Calstar have also all been great blanks. With a little more information I'm sure suggestions on blanks

Try REC Components to the left. Many different designs in all metal and insert spinning reelseats.

7875. Re: Spiral Guides
I'd use a low frame doublefoot 12, #10 single foot fly, 2 ea #8 fly, and the rest #6s to the #6 tip. If your making it into an inshore rod that may have to pass the knots of a bimini twist or shock leader than larger tip guides will probably be necessary.

Probably the rod I had the most fun with fishing for sturgeon is the Lamiglas GSB 132 1L with the GRAPHX extension on it to extend it to 15 ft long.
I fish it with a Abu 7000 or Shimano 700 size reel and 20 to 25 lb line. It's been '91 since Ive been in your area, but I don't remember having to throw that much lead to get when I needed to get fishing there. 3 ft handles are to norm here in the P

Are you building a sturgeon shore or boat rod? White or green sturgeon? How far do you have to cast to get to the hole the sturgeon is setting in?

Dan Craft might be able to cut you something in a Sig IV blank. Winston has the WT 6963. Versitex has the Pac Bay IGF966/3-G.

I've bought a lot of aluminum rod cases from Angler's Workshop they also have rod socks. They custom cut them to any length you want and ship the same day. I've walked in and out the door with a custom set up in just a few minutes. Can't get faster than that. They have many options of rod cases I haven't used and aren't on their website, give them a call for info.

The GLX is a high mod. graphite that was at the time of it's introduction was the only graphite designed only for rodbuilding. The rest are aerospace/aviation/military graphites that happen to be used in rodbuilding. Whether this is still true I don't know, the technology might have caught up with the GLX grapite as it's over 10 years old now. The graphite in the Lamiglas IM700 and IMX blanks I w

If your going to use the concept system the stripper only has to be 1/2 the diameter of the reels lip. The reel will tell you which guides to use if you use the primer that's in the library above. The suggestions above look like more of a line of flight setup which will work fine, but will be balance heavier in the tip.

I had Dan send a set of Forecast guides with the blank, the Recoils stop at size 1 which to me looked to big for the little blank. If doing it again I think I would have gone with the simpler wraps you mentioned. Black guides with your black hardware and wraps might look nice with this blank.

7885. Re: light jigs rod
I agree with Matt's suggestions, I really like the PSJ662 Shikari blank for these weight jigs. Built one as a casting rod that threw 1/4 oz spinnerbaits further than any other rod I've ever used or built by a considerable margin, it's also a light, very sensitive, and well balanced blank.

7886. Re: Casting Reels
Haven't tried a Cardiff , but the Corvalus hasn't done well reliability wise as Tom mentioned.
Nick said it all about the Abu reels, some of the reels I've seen on the river look like they were dragged behind the truck from all the bangs, dents, bent handles and scrapes they gotten from being dropped and dragged around on the rocks, but they keep on ticking(15, 20, 30 years old) and everyone has

Rich,
For steelhead your usually using 8 to 12 lb line usually, and they usually stay in the same pool you catch them in.
If I was fishing Canada or the WA peninsula in March for the big natives, I'd use a mag taper medium like Dave suggested, or med heavy moderate action rod with 15 to 20 lb line and a 5601 Abu depending on the gear and water conditions I was put in. Heavy/cold water and the

7888. Re: Guide Suggestions
Kyle,
If you want some color might look at the new Forecast LTCM guides, they have been around for many years, but not in these color choices. Have been used on light steelie rods for many years. They go down to size 4 rings, so they are pretty light.
The guide sizes depend on the reel you're using, all is explained in the Library section above in the concept guide primer.

The left handed reel would be the Curado 201, in a round reel the Calcutta 251 is a fine reel. If you are staying out of saltwater the Diawa TD-Z103HL or 100ML for more capacity are super smooth and lightweight with their magnesium frames and ceramic spools. The shape is different than other reels and super comfortable to palm all day.
