I am still in the dark on a couple things as a rod builder having to pay a fed. tax {yes I do quarterly}....I have a couple suppliers who show me paying a tax on my invoices while others do not...because...I am told that the tax they charge is hidden in the cost of the material...if this is so then the feds are double taxing the rod builder....am I correct on this and is this not considered doub

I have tested Citri-Strip on many types of blanks and have left them sit for 48 hours plus.....never a problem ...but the old strippers will do in some blanks quickly. With the "HOT" type strippers you should use gloves and be quick on removing, but on the Citrius type remover I have never used gloves. After stripping I wash down the blanks with a soaked rag of denatured alcohol.

Correct me if I am wrong on this but here goes.....G. Loomis was owned originally by Gary Loomis, Gary was a mastermind of graphites... He sold part of his warehouse to Shimano but not the Loomis name {Shimano could not put the G.Loomis name on their rods} at a later date Gary Loomis sold G. Loomis to a couple of his employees which after awhile did not work out for the new owners and Gary Loom

Vern....Quite a few years ago I purchased quite a few wooden butt caps from Dale Clemens catalog and then the Canadians "Loonie" golden dollar coin was new on their scene...I incorperated these coins onto the wooden butt caps just by epoxt glue and affer the glue had dried I inserted the butt cap onto a wooden dowell, added numerous coats of good old Flex coat finish and they call out p

I am death against any sort of heat....I am now working on four re-do's of Fenwicks and to date have done hundreds of these. If the finish needs to be removed I have used every kind of harsh strippers down to the newest citrus strippers and have never had a single problem with any of them. I personally like todays citrus type paint removers and it is best to take your time on any re-do's. It is

While serving time at a bait shop I was privy to see just about every Tica rod made and I can tell you that when Tica first came onto the market they had some of the prettiest butt wraps around but dang near every rod had different type guides and most were right out of Wal Mart type stores....pure junko.

You lucked out Barry....I sent a antique bamboo 4 piece in a metal original tube to Clearwater B.C. Canada and when the customer picked it up at the post office the metal tube was bent in half. This was sent U.S.P.S and was insured for $800.00 and now the customer is in heated controversy...the problem being is that this tube was in perfect condition and actually worth more than the rod that was

Far North West California here...........What with all the fires and no water in the lakes and rivers due to no snow packs the year has been a complete bust for the local fishing supply houses and on the coast there is no Salmon fishing.....But sales are triple the amount last year or two for rod repairs...Money is tight everywhere it seems.

Uncle Russ is right on.... this is not a step backwards for us rod builders, it will only help us along the way once the shine wears off. Gentlemen and Gentlewomen...this is the space age as I recall and just maybe they can catch something in outer space with them, for me I think I will continue with all the fine ideas I am enjoying from all of you here on the forum Flash Gordon has returned

Matthew...I am a long time builder and I still use the suggested guide spacing from the mfg's. only I put the guides on with rubber bands and then I static test the blank and re-aline the guides to my satisfaction and have never had a problem when they were test cast by myself and then the customer...the main thing is the static test. Now if this was a blank from the Batsons, Kerry would send

Tim....everybody has their own opinion.....I for one have found that you can go by todays length of the blank plus one {7'=8 guides} and if your recommended guide placements are appx. the same you can set your blank up by doing the static test along with the reel attached and tweaking the guides to your satisfaction....all of the info can be found here on the forum. If you are using a Batson b

Greg........Are you using the "new" milky or smelly Gudebrod 811 ? they are the worlds worse in my estimation, like just using water on the wraps. If it was the old clear , low odor 811 then on #521 Gudebrod green I always use two coats of CP

I see where Tom has mentoned using Old Dutch Cleanser for water breaking on a rod....when I first seen the forum here I mentioned using this perticular cleanser, and to this day I still do, it is bar none the best around just a damp fine cell sponge with a little cleanser on it and it is done....The only problem I have had with it is the e mails I received from certain people on this forum...very

Sorry Bob but I agree with Tom....NO HEAT SHOULD EVER BE USED... to remove anything that has been applied with epoxy glue. You are asking for big trouble....I have tried to save rods where heat has been used by pros. and could not repair most of them. Timothy....as Tom says to save a couple bucks it may not be worth it....or you could save those bucks and go as I suggest. It may add a couple o

Take it to your Buddy, machine it off, drill the blank out of the gimbal, fit a plug that will adapt as a female ferrule between the gimbal and blank, re-epoxy with Lamar gel and make sure you tape it from blank to gimbal the long way using masking tape and re-check alignment before setting down between your rod supports.

Lance....I wipe all of my blanks down with denatured alcohol using cheese cloth and never had a problem. Many moons ago I used rags that were washed and I had spots that I beleive came from the washed rags, maybe soap. Cheese cloth solved that problem.

Michael....If these rods are for your own use you will be able to do it...if not...forget it. You should be able to do your glue ups in no time at all and wrap each blank daily with no cp and one coat of finish per each rod and if you run out of time you can still fish them with the one coat and do all the tweaking of mistakes you found and all the bells and whistles. In the past I have fished

Mike....I have always had a problem with Diamondite, slight blush.hazy ,dull and just plain cloudy, yet at times out and out beautiful. I even went as far as putting a coat of Flexcoat on every other guide and the Flexcoat never changed but the Diamondite did...very maddening to say the least. I finally got tired of re-coating, sanding, stripping etc. and am now only using Flexcoat and accepting

Tried the epoxy finish over lots of things 30 plus years ago....sorry to say but anything that gives to the touch is not the thing to coat with epoxy finish....looks fine for only a short time and then shear disaster sets in ....how in the world do I get this stuff off now that it has aged..??.you don't as the eva comes off in chunks...I suggest you leave it alone and in it's natural state.
