Batsons "E" Glass blanks {Forecast} are the finest "E" you can find anywhere in my estimation.....and this is in both the cast and spin useages and at the same time they do not make you run to a bank to take out a loan.......... Durability with a capital "D"..........Their weight ranges I can attest to from both spin and cast customers I have built for. I have been t

I have had quite a few repairs in the past on rods that have been brought to me that were graphite and a set was in them due to the fishing person putting a seven foot rod into a six foot pick-up bed and transporting them in very hot conditions...never could get the sets out like I could with glass by just hanging them by their tip on a nail in the heat of the day. Have not seen any of these pro

Steve has sort of explained a "Twitch" handle to a tee of a oldie that I have from the 60's I beleive....behind the reel seat ,which is of pot metal , is a adjustable 7" cork grip that is adjustable to either the right or the left at about 20 to 30 degrees. It has a clamp down type nut where the fore grip should be so that you insert the blank into the nut collar and tighten down.

In the early days of my rodbuilding I read quite a few things about Jim Grandt and back then in my eyes Jim was a dang fine builder, today I have no idea if he still is or not as I have not seen any of his work....Jim had taken the ball and ran with it and he did well, he marketed his product and seems to have done quite well. Jim was smart enough not to mention any dates that I know of when he b

Sean has hit the nail right on the head....DAWN DISH SOAP.....hates wax . In the past I used Dawn and denatured alcohol mixed one to one to clean off Armour All and in some cases worked on silicone {not always}

Sorry Bob but I do not think Cabela's sells spell checkers....I know, I know ,it was worth a try.....Any way as I recall Sage used a thread in size "A" I beleive and it almost exactly matched their blank with no c.p. on them. This made for a very transparent look and had the visual effect of a underwrap under un-natural lighting. Was this after a little of the grape with dinner ????

Barry....I built and used a spiral wrap for salmon off the coast of San Francisco when I first learned of the spiral wrap and I was dang near laughed off the boat....BUT... after watching the ease of my landing a good sized fish there were orders for five just like mine and the orders never stopped rolling in. This was many years ago with Rich Forhans first mention of his Revolver Rods and I am

Mike Pedersen....A bit of a off topic that you may help me with....in your pic of the rod you built the guide wrap looks like it has essence of pearl in it and I have had pics sent to me of the green Shimano reel and it does the same thing but yet it is not in the reel itself and your rod looks nothing like Karrys, it looks very distorted to me...Is this my computor or is everyone getting these s

My Two Cents..... 1] NO 2] Prep guide foot...start at guide foot. 3] strictly cosmetic, if you want flash use at hook keeper. Lighness is what you are looking for in a fly rod.

I have never trusted any mfg. when they dot their blanks....I rub off the dots with denatured alcohol and on the stuborn ones I scrape with a finger nail after the alcohol softening and rub another coat of alcohol and they should disapear. After that I eyeball the natural curve of the blank and mark with a white grease pencil....no problem....if no white grease pencil you can use a white or yell

I myself like the stealth look {basic black on a black on grey colored blank} a one thread inlay or a three thread trim wrap always looks nice... I bet if you get in touch with Raymond Adams he will send you a great tutorial on trim bands and inlays.

Yup....Been there done that !!!! That constituted my first power wrapper...with a little thought behind it you will find that it is fairly simple with a little wood work for supports and motor stand. Go for it !!!!

Another great name in the rod building has left us...My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. I was one of his first customers when he opened shop...Fish on Gene !!!!! I will remember with great fondness our telephone conversations in the late sixtys and early seventys and he always threw in a fish story.

Walt....When first doing a guide wrap the wrap always seems the hardest but after awhile it becomes the easiest and like Bill Stevens says you will laugh at yourself....You more than likely will try every way possible to do this wrap but for me it was in the preping of the guide as Tom mentioned that seems to make it the easiest. Some will have a island where they can work from both sides...some

Garreth....Your email is hidden so I hope you get this....If you are powered up with a lathe such as a Pac Bay or Renzetti you can wet sand very easily....if not it will not be very difficult just more labor intensive, either which way I use 800 grit wet or dry and curl the sandpaper in my hand and sand from the butt forward to the tip doing so lightly and after doing so you can tell if there are

Garreth....I see no effect at all on the raw blank....I too love the look of natural graphite...I have safely removed any dis-colorations due to scatches or surface nicks in the graphite by using citrus remover and a tooth brush. None of this will weaken your raw blank. I have done many in my time and I think the natural look is the greatest. Bill Stevens.....Move over, I want to sit next to y

Stan....Your email is hidden....I will check the dusty cartons in the a.m. and see if I still have any info on the sixties. Tom is correct ,the Wonderod in those wrappings were from the sixtys and were a fantastic spin rod in fiberglass and the Kwiktaper made for a super fast action. I can not truthfully say but I do not recall bass casting rods by Shakespeare in those days. You have a won

Way to go Jim...love it !!!!! I do not charge what the norm of rod builders charge and DO have a lifetime warranty on my workmanship...I do not offer the same on the rest of the componets and I offer to send the damaged blank back to my supplier in a tube with them paying the postage, letting the supplier be the good or bad guy so to speak....I have never had to do any of this in my thirty pl

Uncle Russ.......Go with the Forecast blanks from Batson and you can make far better sticks than the Pinacles and you are not being a copy cat..... In other words "More Bang For The Buck" and you more than likely will steer this customer away from store boughts and put a fine Calico Creek built rod into their hands, then and only then if the customer continues with cost compared to qual
