Thanks for all of the help guys. I never would have thought about these different options. Looks like I have a big thread order to make so that I can try out a bunch of these suggestions. Anyone have any idea if any of the vendors sell for really cheap or give away broken or unuseable blanks that I might me able to get my hands on to use for wrap samples? It would be really nice to have a set

Tom, that sounds really cool. I'm going to have to try and find a blank to play around with different color combos.

I didn't realize there were so many different color combos for green. Tommy, what does the metallic silver do to the teal? Does it give it a kind of metalic look when the finish goes on?

I don't even know what that color is? isn't that kind of purple? BTW, it was nice meeting you at the rod show. You guys do some incredible work.

I've been racking my brain to try and figure out what colors look good with Green but I keep coming up with yellow but I don't want a Green Bay Packers rod. Anyone use any colors other than yellow and gold with Green? I have no sense of what colors look good with what.

Just one other thought (probably dumb since I'm really new to this). Could it be that you are introducing a new component into the mix? I understand that there are some other chemicals that might cause a problem like this such as silicon but I'm not sure what else could cause it. What are you using to mix the epoxy in and what are you mixing it with?

Thanks Dave. I didn't want to start banging away on these until I got some confirmation that I wasn't doing anything wrong.

After using the search feature I found most of the answers to my questions but I still have one more. I've got some double foot fuji guides that I'm prepping for some surf rods and the feet on the guides kind of curls over at the end of each foot causing the middle of the guide feet to not touch the blank. I've read in Tom's book about filing the bottom of the feet down and I have done some o

Chris, I can't speak to the 1087 specifically but I can speak to the quality of the Rainshadow blanks. I've got 5 surf rods built on Rainshadow blanks (1145, 1266, 1387, 1417, and 1508) and they are all fantastic. In fact I am in the process of building 3 more. Each one casts great and they have held up extremely well.

Duane, it seems to have dried without any airspaces, but there is always the possiblity that I just can't tell that they are there so I may run into that very problem. Once I wrap it and have a chance to finish it I'll report if I ran into any issues with it.

Jim, I was alternating between forward and reverse. I didn't think about that before but, I wonder if that had any effect on loosening the fibers of the fiberglass?

I'm not sure if anyone else has done this or not. I was putting the cork tape and reel seats on 3 surf rods one of which has a split grip. As I was using the Ultimate Gel to put on the reel seats I was debating how I would do the epoxy ramps on the split grip and it occured to me that with the stiffness of the UG it might be perfect for the job. I used a small flexible artists paint spatula an

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm not sure what I did wrong or what happened. I haven't had a chance to talk to the guys from Custom Tackle (got them from those guys at the rod show) about it or the guys from Batson but just wanted to get the warning out before anyone else ran into the same problems. I'll let you guys know what I hear back from them.

Just a quick warning for those with the dream reamers. I was using my smallest one with a cordless drill today to ream out a 10" cork handle and the fiberglass rod delaminated. I'm not sure why, I wasn't using it long enought to heat it up and in fact kept cleaning it every 10 - 15 seconds or so and it never seemed more than a little warm. So, if you are going to use them on a drill be VE

Thanks Mike. That's basically how I did it but since this is my first rod build and I had never worked with any of this stuff before I wasn't really sure if that's the way to go. I also had some problems with getting it all over everything. I'm not a very neat person to begin with but by the time I was done it felt like I, the rod, and my entire work area were covered in the stuff. The good n

I'm working on my first rod and am using Andy's new Ultimate Gel to attach the reel seat and handle to the rod. Has anyone else used this stuff? I was wondering because I made a total mess trying to measure it out and ended up with it spread all over everything. What is the easiest way to measure out equal parts?

I'm sure that I have the newer stuff since I just bought it about 5 months ago and I'll try it on the rod this weekend when I get a chance and let you know what the results are. I wish that I knew what the rods looked like with the plastic polish that you are using for a comparison but I will be able to give a comparison of what the diffence is with a rod that has never seen polish before. I'll

well, I have no idea what alaphatic hydrocarbons are so I'm glad you told me. I wonder if it would be safe on the wrap finish once it has cured. I think I'm going to try messing with the stuff on a rod and see what it does. The rod I'm going to do this on has a decorative wrap on the handle and I'm wondering if it will have the same type of effect that it does with paint in terms of making it

I'm not sure of the type of finish that is used on the driver but it is a titanium driver. As far as the contents of it I'm not sure since I don't have a bottle (can actually) of it handy. They offer two versions of it one is a regular car polish and one is a marine version for boats. The regular version says that it is safe on paints and epoxy but I don't want to trust the marketing blurb tha

That's great! Anyone use liquid glass? The stuff is tough as nails and really puts an incredible shine and depth on paint. I'm wondering if it does the same on a rod. I've got a big surf rod that I rarely use and I might give it a shot and see what it does if you guys think it will be safe.

Does anyone use anything like car wax or liquid glass to polish and or protect the rods that they build? I was putting liquid glass on the head of my driver to protect the paint from the inevitable sky balls that I will hit with it and it dawned on me that it might work to protect my rods as well. Another reason that I was wondering, beyond protection, is that it puts an incredible shine on the

This is probably a really dumb question and I think the answer is probably "whatever looks good to you", but, I guess I'll ask anyway. Is there any need to have a winding check on a rod? I'm going to start putting together my first rod in the next couple of weeks and I just can't figure out why you would need it. My first rod is a 6'6" flyrod and the cork grip is tight against t
