Thanks guys. I've read the new concept guide (two or three times) and I've also got and read Tom's book but I was hoping for more info. I may have missed some of the stuff that Tom covered since I read it while thinking about a fly rod build I'm going to start with. I'll go back and re-read his book.
Some of the things that I was hoping to see in one of the issues of the mag is putting toge

I'm want to build a 6' 6" - 7' spinning rod for throwing jigs and spoons (3/8 - 1/2 oz) to flounder and redfish and since I have never built a rod I was wondering which issue(s) of Rod Maker covered the building of this type of rod the best?? I'm about to order a couple of other issues and figured I would try and see if there was another issue in particular that related to this type of buil

Thanks everyone for the replies!! I have just started working on putting my first rod together and I want to try and do this right the first time. I don't have a drying motor so I will be hand turning the rod. I'll practice all of the suggestions above and see what I can get to work best.

Does anyone have a trick for getting really straight epoxy lines where the eposy goes on the blank just off a wrap? I was thinking of trying some painters tape but my guess is you guys just have extremely steady hands after so much practice. Would it not be a good idea to try some sort of tape to get a straight line?

Robert, are Tommy Wheelers rods the new ones that are starting to get some publicity on the Hatteras fishing boards called "WheelsReels" or something like that?

I can tell you about the blanks but not much in terms of guide sizes or placement. The su 1266 will cast up to 5 ozs really well and can handle a light cast with 6ozs. The 1267, I believe, will handle 6 ozs very well. I currently fish the 1266 and it is an incredible rod and is capable of very long casts and fighting very big fish (largest I've caught so far is a 46" Red Drum). It is a f

I will be coming to the Rod Builders show in February and I was wondering if anyone might be there that could answer some questions on how to fix and possibly refinish some bamboo rods. My dad has about 5 rods ranging from fly rods to a boat rod that he would like to try and refinish and I'm hoping that someone might be willing to take a look at each one and help us figure out what is the best w

Thanks Tim. I was wondering if I should get an extra spool for the reel for a higher wt line. Once I've got it built and have had a chance to see if it works (or at least doesn't fall apart) I'll probably do just that. Great to hear you like that blank!!

Actually he's 4 months old so I will get some use out of this one before I get him started in a couple years. But when he is ready I'll have to build him at least one fly rod and

Hello everyone. I just wanted to stop in and and say hi. I've been reading the forum (and Glossary and Library) for the last month or so and after much debate I've decided to give rod building a try. I'm going to attempt to build a Forecast 6'6" 2wt flyrod. I think after reading most of the posts that I've got a fairly good idea of what mistakes can be made (although I can be creative so
